There's nothing like playing with the masters to challenge you. But then you will also challenge them, as we see here, which is so cool. This is awesome haha.
I cannot believe it 🤩🤩🤩!!! You have played with Simon Phillips, he is one of my absolute favorite drummers. Just wow!!! You have even convinced him so much that he wants to steal this "lick" of you..😅 Insane!!! Thank you so much Yoyoka for showing this!
Bravo, Yoyoka! This video made me laugh 😂 (which is high praise). It's been amazing watching you evolve and grow over the past 5-6 years. Keep it greasy! 🔥👏
I have had the pleasure of seeing Simon live a few times-he is just a phenomenal drummer and songwriter. Yokoka proves she’s got a great future in music!
A number of comments refer to how nervous people would be playing beside Simon or any legend. YOYOKA almost never gets nervous. She has been playing with adults, Japanese legends, now US legends for 10 years. This is another facet to her talent. She is not just a UA-cam hiding in their living room musician.
It goes way beyond my capabilities to judging about the drumming itsels. but I have always loved your enthousiasme for drumming Yoyoka, and it is clear you are an amazing talent!❤
Tall tall cotton! Amazing older musicians since 2013 at least. Simon lays it down and the Hokkaido Hammer picks it up! 😮 Always impressed and still constantly surprised by Yoyoka!
Been watching you for years and since I’m not a drummer, but am musically inclined in other instruments, I don’t actually realize some of your movements aren’t ‘standard’. I’m just always in awe at your precision and it’s nice to see when the “Masters” jaws also drop.
Simon Phillips (born 6 February 1957 in London) is a prolific English jazz, pop and rock drummer. He got early prominence as the drummer on the acclaimed 1976 LP 801 Live with Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno.[2] He went on to play with a wide array of musicians including Big Jim Sullivan, The Who, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Big Country, Toto, Los Lobotomys, Jeff Beck, Judas Priest.
Ahahaha my jaw dropped on the same section where Simon was speechless as well! I'm biased but I think your parts sounded more deliberate, rather than tapping away making things confusing for the listener. Like who really wants to make that their purpose??? I've always enjoyed your funky playing the most and this was fantastic to watch.
Five years ago, there was an upload of Gabriel's Steam (drummer with PG was Katche). Go and watch it! The hyperbole of today is: She didn't get better, she only has become more polished because she was so good already, then!
That was a lot of fun! I've been a fan of Simon's since 1980's Jeff Beck "There & Back" album. It looks like you earned some respect from Phillips-sama! I'm also a fan of Simon's open handed playing style. He is probably the most famous practitioner of that style and he recorded some monster albums with his amazing double bass drumming as well.
I believe Simon's objective here was to show Yoyoka that what is most important is to be open to the muse, that when the spirit hits you from the inside just go with it. He was definitely coming up with things on the fly and that translated to Yoyoka, she totally got that and ran with it. Once Simon realized that she was in the zone, that's when she did that super smooth crosshands thing and Simon stopped her to interject some praise (reinforcement for her going there). He's a great teacher, it might appear to be humility but, in truth, it is cunning. He was coaxing out what he knew was in there from the start. Those two would be very interesting to hang out with because she instinctively gets him, his kind of mysterious almost devious ways of going about things, and she's so open to go anywhere musically. Yeah, they need to hang together more. Forget ''instructions'' or ''lessons'', just hang out together.
You know you are on the path to greatness when a legend such as Simon Phillips is asking you how you did something. And then YOYOKA is like "How did I do what?" "Oh that." Like it's just routine....lol
I’ve been watching Yoyoka since she was 8. I feel like a proud Aunt. 🩷☮️🎶
When Simon Phillips says "I'm going to steal that!", you know you've done a good thing!
Simon is one of the best out there and if he wants to steal your licks that's about the highest compliment you can get.
The smile on your face when Simon was playing spoke volumes. What Simon said at the end showed his respect for you and your playing. Awesome video!
When Simon cusses in front of you, that means he was impressed with your drumming, Yoyoka.
Literally no fear. Her genuineness to just play, learn and always wanting to improve.

Boy, did Yoyoka hold her own! I've been playing drums for 42 years and I'd never be brave enough to get behind a kit next to Simon Phillips. 😮
When someone with Simon Phillips' resume is not only impressed with your skill but learns something new... you know you are a badass!
Rock on Yoyoka!
I think he did that to say something kind, not because he was really impressed.
Playing with Simon Phillips is like a huge honor!
My jaw dropped to the floor with awe! Yoyoka!
I have had the pleasure of seeing Simon live a few times-he is just a phenomenal drummer and songwriter. Yokoka proves she’s got a great future in music!
AMAZING! ✨🌟🌜🌞🌛🌟✨ Simon Phillips is one of my all time favorite drummers. What a fortunate moment to drum it out with him. 🤙🏽 🖖🏽 ✌🏽 🙏🏽
No matter how good you are or how old you are there is always opportunity to learn.
Word!
He said steal that
Youth always brings a newest to whatever they excel in, providing innovation to move the music forward.

Great comment, I was thinking the same thing not so long ago.
Just to mention, this US legend is British.
Another big-time pro showing respect for Yoyoka! Thanks, Simon!
Oh, I just loved this one. Seeing the two of them working together. 👍
YOYOKA always leaves a wake of amazement.
Wow, Yoyoka showing incredible restraint here!😄💪🏻🤘🏻
amazing to see your progress and development! and playing with some top notch pros!
Was waiting for you to unleash that right foot on him. The crossovers were amazing!!! WTG!!!
That was awesome! I’m smiling from ear-to-ear! 😊
Wow. This is great. Learning never stops. Nice work Yoyo-san ... that is a good connection with Simon.
He so smooth. She’s great and will achieve that, too! He’s got a 50yr head start.
Drums are so humbling instrument, you can always learn something new and grow :). Humility makes great man.
Bravo! What a joy to watch!! Thank you.
As always asome job Yoyoka i enjoyed it immensely thank you both.
That's an awesome pairing of master and phenom! =D
Well said!
So cool Yoyoka and Simon playing together . 🤘🏽🤜🏽
Simon Phillips is a badass
Yoyoka is very good. But Simon is like you said badass.
Love it, looks like Simon got a little lesson there!😂
It goes way beyond my capabilities to judging about the drumming itsels. but I have always loved your enthousiasme for drumming Yoyoka, and it is clear you are an amazing talent!❤
Love the vibing off each other!
I love the respect Simon shows her by stopping his cymbal when its her turn!
OMG, just can't believe it. Great job, Yoyoka.
When the teacher has to ask the pupil how to do something 😊😂!
Tall tall cotton! Amazing older musicians since 2013 at least. Simon lays it down and the Hokkaido Hammer picks it up! 😮 Always impressed and still constantly surprised by Yoyoka!
Just thrilling😮 I’m gonna steal that!!!
Looks like a day well spent! Kudos and regards! :D
"That hi-hat crossover thang".. very cool.
Super-Girl!
Good work, Yoyoka.
God bless
Wow! Both drummers I adore, together in the same studio!
I love that you got to drum with Simon. Hope you had a blast!
That was super cool. Thanks for sharing. Impressing Simon is serious!

Wow! You get to meet the coolest people… that’s for Simon 👏👍
I would be totally freaking out in this situation - my nerves would be off the charts!!
“Off the charts!!”
I finally got it. You’d be so nervous that you couldn’t read the charts. Therefore “off the charts.” Very clever.
Nice Yoyoka!
Happy 15th 💕💕💕
This was fantastic. Now let's see a drum - off with Mr. Mangini!
Super cool! From a drummer since learning Wipeout on the bottom of a park trashcan in 1968, Carderock on the Potomac.🥁
It’s so cool, you played with master Yoda🤘🤘🤘

Always be learning!
When you think you know everything there is always someone who knows even more.
Amazing young Drummer . Great Job YOYOKA !!!!

Simon is an all time favorite for me. I like to describe him as “the best drummer The Who ever had.”😮

I like your glasses, they look great on you.
Outstanding video
They're Both Great!!
Totally awesome!
Aw! ❤ So sweet.

This jam with Simon Philips is absolutely incredible, he's not just anyone either. I don't really know what except phew
Simon says: perfect.

Fantastic GUYSSSs 😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
The ultimate Maestro-san!
Just BRILLIANT!
Wow! I think everybody got something out of that😮🥁🥁
Could be my new Ringtune!
This all began with Robert Plant saying " I know where she can get a job"

"Not my tempo"😂😂. This is so awesome!!

I'm so happy to see you play with Simon. Perhaps you can have a drum battle with Mark Brzezicki, too :)
I think it's safe to say you can add DRUMS to you resume!
@@davewave2760 😁😁😁😁
Bella/Magnifico.🙏✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️👑
Holy moly.
It's so strange to see Simon behind a small regular kit ! 😀😀
So awesome
I would have been happy just to meet Simon! And Yoyoka too!
You know you are on the path to greatness when a legend such as Simon Phillips is asking you how you did something. And then YOYOKA is like "How did I do what?" "Oh that." Like it's just routine....lol
Superb!!
That was some good stuff man!!
My favorite drummer playing with some guy I used to serve drinks to in Ojai. Very surreal 🤣
