#ReforestEarth

In October 02019, we made a forest of 1000 trees outside the UK parliament, and called it #ReforestEarth 🌱
We labelled the first 650 trees with the names of each member of parliament 🏷 and asked them to come and get them, and commit to planting billions more.

An unbelievable 2/3 of all MPs got their trees.
A few weeks later, the 3 biggest 🏛 political parties in the UK made new promises...
Labour promised to plant 2 billion 🌳 mixed native trees by 2040, and as part of that Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the party, said he planned to plant his #ReforestEarth tree at 10 Downing Street (the home of the British government).
The Liberal Democrats promised to plant 60 million 🌿 trees every year, and Vince Cable, the former party leader, confirmed that the party's decision had been influenced and inspired by #ReforestEarth.
The Conservatives promised to plant 30 million 🌱 trees every year.

⚠️ An important point ⚠️
We definitely need a lot more trees 🦉, but trees are not the wonder cure for the climate crisis, and certainly mustn’t be used as an excuse for offsetting "business as usual".
Since making this campaign, there's been a lot of discussion in the scientific community about how much carbon trees can absorb. (Check out "Comment on the global tree restoration potential” in Science if you'd like to know more in detail.)
In essence, what we really need is trillions of trees worth of re-wilded nature. Planting monocultures of non-native or poorly-selected trees can be highly damaging, and it's a mistake to think that trees alone are the solution.
The best store of carbon that we have - by miles - is thriving wild nature. Yes, much of the carbon in wild nature is stored in the trees. But loads is also stored in the soil, the fungi, the insects and so on.
The bottom line is that, if nature is healthy, then we are winning... and vice versa.
So please do encourage reforestation, but always be sceptical of tree planting schemes that aren't planting diverse, native trees. And always be sure that trees are being planted in places where they should naturally be, and only aren't because of prior human destruction, or a natural disaster or similar.
As for the climate crisis as a whole, more than anything, we need the political will to end our addiction to fossil fuels 🛢 before it’s too late.
