I was there about three weeks ago. The streetcars were a great way to get around. On my first day I got a 3$ day card. I only had 5$ so they gave me a 2$ voucher/card instead of money change. I used the voucher the next day, so that is also an option to not having the exact amount. Great tips as always.
Side note: When driving, streetcars have right of way over other vehicles. Period....And not just because they're the size of a city bus and cannot stop on a dime without the risk of derailing. Also, don't stop on top of the tracks when crossing the street. If you/your car get damaged as a result, the cops *will* side with the streetcar driver (see first sentence ;) ), as you're not supposed to be there in the first place. It's treated more or less the same as blocking an auto-traffic intersection. On the up side: When you need to change from a bus line to a streetcar line (or vice versa), or just moving from one SC line to another, ask for a "transfer" from the driver when you pay. It should be like 10 or 20 cents, and having one means you do NOT need to pay the $1.25 again when switching. If you have a day pass, this is not necessary.
Awesome video! So informative. Love the details bc I have anxiety & I worry about the smallest stuff 😅 appreciate the tip on exiting from the front of the streetcar
We stayed in an Air B&B off St Charles st right in front of a Street Car stop and we had the best time. The NOLA is one of the greatest cities in the world in my opinion. $3 for an all day trolley pass is hard to beat. They don't take you everywhere but they do take you where you need to go. The fact that they run all night and as long as you aren't belligerent you can be pretty smashed on the trolley. They even let me and my wife on board with our drinks. Just be nice to the drivers and they will remember you.
I love your videos! I'm trying to save up for the next 5 years, and after I'm done with college I'm going to quit my job, and hit the road, and travel for 2-3 years straight. Watching your videos is really helping me get an insight into traveling, and what I need to be prepared for. Keep up the videos!!!
Sending best wishes a year later. The streetcars are wonderful transport. and a trip up the St. Charles streetcar is a musr. As a New Orleanian, [et me add that under the tourist dreck are specific places to learn our great history. Go to the Cathedral in Jackson Square. It sits facing the Park created by the Baroness Michaela Almonester de Pontalba. As the daughter of the richest man in then French Louisiana, she was married off at 15 to Celestin, the son of Baron Pontalba. and taken to France. Here her father-in-law, wanting her dowry, shot her, then killed himself. She survived. On her return to New Orleans, she took the area in front of the Cathedral (the "Plaza des Armas" or parade grounds of the colony,) and created the park, with its statue to celebrate Andrew Jackson, who had defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans. On either side of the park, she had twin apartments built. I would love if you did more “how to’s” for country (city) specific public transportation like this video, such as how to use public transport in Amsterdam/The Netherlands, or Brussels/Belgium. Thanks for the great videos!
Fantastic! You forgot to mention the best deal on the street car is the senior cost is $0.40. Keep making your great videos. You are great but your wife and kids also do a wonderful job.
@1:51 Nice listing of the lines and destinations. I wonder if the city ever really intended to resurrect the *_Desire Line_* or simply rename one of them? Seems like that would be cool.
well i hope this video helped a bit :) Was in Baton Rouge a few years ago on a Sunday. We ate well and there was a small festival by the capital buildings nad offices.
“Who carries a dollar in quarters around?” *has $10 worth from the last two visits to the US - great for the streetcars (but be quick about it) or laundromats like Suds Dem Duds on Bourbon.*
If you hear that streetcars run 24/7 that’s not true for all streetcars so check first (Riverwalk does not). Ferries are different fares. If you’re going to an event (like a Saints game) via a street car expect to be crammed in like sardines. The one trip fares are only one way.
Thanks for tips we used them on our recent trip to Nola, we downloaded the app it was easy. You must have the exact amount because they don’t give change
great video, me and my partner are travelling to America from the UK for the first time this November we are doing the New Orleans Memphis and Nashville tour and I'm so glad i came across your video's they have been absolutely amazing to watch so much great information, keep up the amazing work you do on educating people like me and my partner who are first time traveller's to the U,S in exactly what to do and what to expect, so once again i thank you!
I’ve been to NOLA before but haven’t taken the streetcar. I don’t know where to find the streetcars for the route I want. For example, where do you pick up the streetcar to go to the Garden District from the French Quarter?
The red streetcars are not the original streetcars - they are ADA compliant replicas built in 1997, and rebuilt in 2009 after being seriously damaged in flooding during hurricane Katrina
KezzDaddy yes I’m going to Brisbane and Sydney in June from the US and I don’t know if they have data plan for the iPhone that I can use in my phone because I don’t want to use the international plan from my carrier which they charge $10 a day and using my own plan here from the USA
My mom is from a suburb of New Orleans amd I grew up less than an hour from the city, yet I still don’t know how to board a trolley (edit- is trolly a NOLA/LA term? I noticed that almost no one uses that term in the comments, they say “street car”)
Because they're passenger operated in the rear as opposed to the driver operated ones in the front. Plus they're older and fully mechanical so they're gonna be slightly problematic.
So jelly you do so much loved your European tourist vid lmao do you have a paytron omg That's not what it's called but still I want to enjoy the world with you
We were disappointed with the streetcars from our trip last week. They DO NOT come by every 10 minutes or less as said in this video. They stop every half hour, which isn’t very convenient. Also, they do not run the entire length on Canal St. We went to board a streetcar, and the driver told us to take a bus. Later, we tried another streetcar and rode it for two blocks until the driver told everyone to get off. Then she pointed up ahead and said if we want to continue on Canal St then we need to walk 4-5 blocks to the streetcars that we could see ahead of us. This video was helpful about the Jazzy Pass, but the streetcar schedules and routes were a disappointment.
I'm going next month, perfect timing! Sidenote: I know your children are older but did you travel with them when they were infants? I'm taking my 5 month old and I would love a video or blog post about traveling with babies, thank you!
When we traveled with our daughter around that age the big challenges were the plane ride (just keeping baby calm and happy) and getting a car seat from the rental car agency. Turns out they initially forgot to give us a strap we needed, which meant we spent 10-15 minutes getting really frustrated at the lack of instructions.
The red Riverfront cars are ADA as they were built from scratch by RTA shops, but the green cars are not as they're older and predate ADA laws. All of the buses are ADA as they are all usually less than 10-20 years old.
Some of the green cars have been retrofitted with wheel chair lifts, not all of them The app will tell you which ones are compliant I lived there recently for 9mos and used St Charles street cars often can’t remember anyone using the lifts Cars can be packed but the fact is the sidewalks, curbs and streets are so treacherous, few people in wheelchairs can navigate to and from the streetcar stops

I remember riding one of these into the garden district and finding a very good frozen daiquiri place at the last stop lol
Visiting new orleans for the first time in june! Your videos are awesome and informative!

What about your kids? Do they need their own passes? No phone? How does that work? TY
Did you notice that the routes the street cars take have color coded street cars. (Red and Green).
Love your videos :) are luggages allowed in the streetcar .???
I have grandparents that live in New Orleans and I love to take the streetcar whenever I go there and I also love to go visit the World War II museum

I plan going in July. I wann visit Dat Dog, 3 legged dog, mothers, Cafe Du Monde.
A great recap! The tip to get the app is really helpful.
The app is seriously helpful too
Is there room for a stroller on the street cars?
Keep your arms INSIDE the windows!
Right. You may need them after you get off the streetcar. Same goes for your head.
Do they accept card?
Why have they made it so difficult to get out in the back ? The doors don't open/close automatically ?
If the back door opened automatically, people might enter in the back door and not pay the fare
Yes, but according to Mark, it was extra difficult to get out in the back, but easier in front ...
Because they're passenger operated in the rear as opposed to the driver operated ones in the front.
Plus they're older and fully mechanical so they're gonna be slightly problematic.

Too bad the streetcars but also all the signs in La Nouvelle Orléans are not in french... it should be bilingual.

They're actually named STELLA!!!!! 😀
