- Josh Heupel and Tennessee have wrapped up spring practice and eventually the 2024 College Football season will arrive with some of the same faces and bigger expectations. Recently Josh welcomed Coach Heupel as the latest guest on the Pate State Speaker Series. What are the biggest challenges facing not only Tennessee but the sport in general? What are the biggest hurdles and lessons to learn heading into this season in Knoxville? Every coach talks about culture but as a former player Heupel spent a lot of time and effort in actually creating a positive environment for the young men.
Nico has his Family that keeps him grounded and humble. He's got a job to do and he wants to do it. He has goals. He's not these young kids running around doing drugs thinks they are better than everyone. He wants to be the best he can be. He's on that road to success. He looked like a Great already in the bowl game, against a top defense. Hope coach has some linebackers and DBacks ready to play at a championship level. A great running back would be good too. Nico can run but he shouldn't run a lot. Like plan runs. Only if players are covered and protection breaks down, he can make them suffer. The field will open up for him when linemen are chasing him.
I saw the difference. Every year I stay in team hotel for one game. Last year all players and families were in the lobby. Shocked me for a second but we had a great time. Have never seen it before over 4 coaches. Josh means what he says about being family. Humble and acts what he believes.
I love this guys attitude about coaching and his players. His beliefs about culture and leading are instrumental in Tennessee being great this year and years to come.

Top 5 basketball most of the season
Top 5 ladies softball
Golf and tennis killing it too!
Lady Vols soccer made 2nd round of the tournament and LV Volleyball made the sweet 16. Men's Swimming finished 6th. The LV swimming has won SEC twice in past 5 years. took 2nd twice as well. pretty crazy how strong the entire athletic department is.

Love hear Coach talk about Nico this way. I really think that Nico's attitude and maturity, while part is just his character, some is part of the Hendon-Milton legacy and the way those two interacted and supported each other, which bled over into how Joe and Nico interacted and supported each other. That's why it was important for Joe top play last year. Hopefully that leads to Nico's relationships with Merklinger and MacIntyre
Player relationships matter, we saw what division between teammates can cause at South Carolina 2022
@@tchrishoward in 55 years of cheering the Vols that game was the hardest I ever had to swallow. We were by far a better team.

This guy is so underrated absolutely had nothing. There were media people saying it would be 5 years before they made a bowl. Everyone forgets that now, because they are a Threat. Growth has a not linear it’s a process.

I agree with you. I think they will give the red carpet treatment. I'm just so very happy that they threw him under the bus when the stoop's brothers were failing. They used JH as the fall guy, because I don't think he would ever leave Tennessee to go back to coach Oklahoma anyway but because of OUs treatment of him to cover Stoop's ass Hype will never go back. Plus you can tell this guy absolutely loves Tennessee.

I would not trade coach Heupel for ANY coach in the country bar none. I watched him at UCF, and knew he had the right stuff.
Awesome interview. Well thought out questions. Well above the average interview questions like "how does it fell..." You got great responses from a coach who is renown for saying nothing. Memaw would be proud.
Go Vols. Lot of players soon to be coming out of Tennessee in the NFL draft under Heupel. The talent is finally starting to get here. It’s only a matter of time we will be back where we belong. 🍊
I don't know about all the culture stuff and relationships, but i like his offensive formations. I think he is a really good offensive coach. He knows and understands what he wants to do.

Best thing about this coach is he has done it at the highest level in college! Times may have changed in the past 20 yrs, but he won a championship as a starting QB! He knows what it takes to win! Tennessee just hasn’t had the talent of a lot of up tier teams! Excited to see how he does moving forward! I personally think within the next 2-5 yrs he will bring a championship to Tennessee!

Huepel loves recruiting and developing young men. The only worry I have (and it’s small) is the in game decision making that was questionable. 4th and 1 snaps from the shotgun against Bama for example. But I will say AD Danny White hit a home run with this hire. Super interesting interview with a highly intelligent coach

Josh, I would have loved for you to ask Coach Heupel about his return to Norman. Has he gotten past the way he left the OU Program? Are there still sore feelings? Josh Heupel is still very much loved in Norman. I suspect he will get a standing ovation when he enters Owen Field!
He won't ever admit it publicly but there are definitely sore feelings still. They used him as the scapegoat even though it was the defense that was struggling. He didn't deserve it.
He showed up to Roy Williams CFB HOF induction. Seemed to mend some of the hard feelings. His main beef is with Stoops, but I believe i heard the 2 have talked and that relationship is better now than it was a few years ago

I’ve seen an interview where he was asked about it. He respected OU and had no hard feelings. He was looking forward to visiting.
