Attempting SUP Buoy Turns and FAILING a lot! How to Step Back / Pivot Turn Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Вставка

- The buoy turn / step back turn / pivot turn is a great skill to master! (And something I need to practise more of!) 🏄🏼♂️
Whether you're just out and about and want to be more agile or want to get the competitive edge in races, being able to perform this skill consistently and smoothly is key! 🔑
This video was filmed at a tidal channel around Mersea Island so had to deal with the tide, waves and coastal breeze which made it a bit more challenging! 🌊 I was fully prepared to be doing my fair share of swimming! 🏊🏼♂️

This was a fun drill to practise! Have you mastered the buoy turn? ⚓️🏄🏼♂️
You inspired me to buy a paddlebord
It is very fun and I love watching your videos.
Hi Sue! That’s awesome feedback thank you so much! Glad you’re enjoying your SUP! Will you be paddling throughout winter? ❄️🏄🏼♂️
Yes I will be paddlebording through the winter
@@sue-arlenebury8645 yes Sue love it! 🙌🏼🥶🏄🏼♂️
Really enjoyed this! Keep up with the videos Mat🏄🏼♂️
Thanks glad you liked it! Plenty more coming up! 🙌🏼🏄🏼♂️
Hi Mat. Never-ending questions about the repair you did. How's the patch holding up? Thanks!
Hi! Unfortunately it’s come off! 🤦🏼♂️ Think it might have been too small a patch and guess from rolling up the SUP made it work loose aswell! Only a slow puncture though and this video was filmed with the slight leak so still holds up well for a 3-4 hour trip easily. Have done an over night camp with it since aswell and just took my pump with me
Switch sides with your paddle. When the paddle is on your heel-side you have essentially a straight line between your feet and the paddle (not stable). When the paddle is on your toe-side you have a triangle between those three points (very stable). This position also makes it very easy to high brace, low brace, draw brace, or tail-side brace to prevent you from falling off in any direction (paddling on the heel side has little-to-no ability to brace and can actually put your shoulders in danger of injury if you try from that position). Put a little weight on your toes to lift the heel-side of your board during the turn to prevent it from "catching" the water and wobbling side to side. Take longer strokes in a thoughtful arc (just like a forward sweep stroke) until the paddle is in line behind your feet. Longer strokes will turn you smoother and faster. Lastly you need to get your back foot over your center fin to actually "pivot" on the fin instead of dragging the fin in a small circle through the water. Unfortunately it looks like your fin might be directly opposite of your inflation valve, so there's no deck pad to give you traction (so get as close as you can, or glue on some deck padding around the valve). Also, having a kick pad on the back greatly helps your confidence and stability as the nose comes up. SUP Race turns can be anything from a gentle arc to a full 180° turn depending on the course. Lastly, before you get too comfortable on your strong side, make sure to start practicing your weak side. It stinks trying to play catch up! lol.
You can see what I'm referring to with the body position and longer strokes in this video at about 4:15 (it's a 360 video, so you may have to pan around to see). It takes 2 strokes to go a full 360° ua-cam.com/video/M02XDGpP0nM/v-deo.html
Wow man that is a wealth of knowledge will have to revise this before heading out next time! 😅 Makes sense though defo something I can look to put into practise 🏄🏼♂️
Elegant 👌
Haha thanks Mark! 🏄🏼♂️
I've never been on a SUP (yet) but I have kayaked. Rather than turning on the outside edge would you get a sharper movement doing a reverse stroke on the inside? Just a thought, and probably completely wrong.
Yes that’s a good point would get me turning a bit sharper! Will have to try that next time! 🙌🏼🏄🏼♂️
@@MorewithMat You're going to drop all of your forward momentum to 0 and possibly launch yourself off the front of your board depending on how fast you were going before you threw it into reverse! Forward Momentum followed by Reverse Strokes is a good way to take an accidental swim.
@@michaelcarney8530 haha oh yes also a good point! Will have to try something in the middle!
