I paid $600 for mine back in 2009, and it came with the full version of Pro Tools. I remember that what i really liked about this back then, was that playing wise it felt more real (better response and feel) than the other stuff that was out at that time. I still have and use mine today, but now i only use it as an audio interface for plugins such as Polychrome and Neural DSP.
Dude, 6:57 immediately brought me back to the 90s!!! Those first 2 Silverchair albums were great...they kinda fell off from there, but man...Frogstomp and Freak Show were outstanding.
FINALLY. I have 4 of these (just got one for $150. Super clean. No dings or anything) Still use it to this DAY. Fantastic. To me the Marshall tones sound closer than anything else. I love the speaker breakup feature too. The editor still works for windows. But there is a trick to getting it to work and not leaving your computer in a boot cycle.
I have owned one of these 3 different times (including the one that I still have in the rack next to me). My favorite modeled amp sound ever is the Matchless in this unit. This one has a great Marshall as well. I think another part of the magic of this unit was that they did a few amps/effects REALLY well instead of paralyzing you with a million "pretty good" options.
A great review. In my experience there is no need to spend thousands of dollars unless you need to keep up with "The Jones". I have been using the Eleven Rack since 2009. It still is my go to effects processor. This beast is still pushing out great sounding recording. But I am grateful you talked about this Sleeping giant. great work Kudos.

The drummer of my band, who taught music technology/production and was a massive music production gear head, had one of these. It was such an interesting piece of kit.
loved this thing back when i was in high school. sold it to a buddy, just so happened to find the same exact unit on reverb a couple years back. i hardly ever use it, but i still love it lol
The Avid Eleven Rack was, and still is, a pretty freakin' rad piece of gear IMO. Especially given it's age. I used to own an AXFX Ultra, and subjectively I would put the Avid right up there next to it as far as tone, and potentially above in regards of faceplate UI. I did however occasionally hear tell post launch of some initial technical issues with the first run of the units. Mostly from my understanding that were hardware related (pots, inputs, outputs, buttons failing), but it's also my understanding that Avid was not only quick to resolve those issues, but that their customer service/tech support for those claims were nothing less than top notch. Although, I would definitely take that as a legitimate overall durability concern for anyone potentially looking at one of these on the used market, which price wise? Can easily be found around the $200 mark. I personally wouldn't recommend spending anywhere near $200, and I'd definitely recommend investing in a rugged live-in rack case, and have some Deoxit D5 & canned air on the ready. Yo Fluff! I still use my 11Rack allllllll the time! I love it! It was in my mixer effects chain for quite a while. That was hella fun! *edit* got mine from a pawn shop for 30$ - went back the next week to the same pawn shop - got a behringer FBC1010 for 50$.
This is bringing me right back to being at college and learning ProTools on the digi 002 and 003. I bought a 003 a few years ago and still use it and the Eleven plug in to this day.
@ Definitely, I had the Mustabeta last firmware on mine. Had an amazing 5150 amp sim, loaded my own IR’s and the GSP has adjustable delay spillover. Puts most modern fx processors and modellers to shame. Way ahead of its time.

Warrens video where they use the ox stomp with this sounds killer. Disabling the 11's speaker emulation and using something updated, this thing is still totally relevant.

Inexpensive and easy to find Fluff idea.....the Behringer V-Amp Pro. That thing only did a handful of tones very well, but those tones it did do well, were spectacular.
This thing was the first modeling unit to get really close to being a convincing replacement for a tube amp. It wasn’t quite there in my experience, but it was close enough that I knew the next generation was going to cross the threshold.
We have two Eleven Racks in the effective racks here in our studio. We have owned these for many, many years. They were both upgraded to the purchased Eleven Rack Expansion Pack which added a number of additional amps, cabs and effects. Since then we have added Fractal Axe FX III units to replace the Eleven Racks as our primary guitar amp, cab and effect modelers. However, the Eleven Racks are still very useful and are used here frequently with our in-house custom presets. The Factory Presets are quite poor and always were…even when the units were new. The Eleven Rack units are far from completely outdated and useless.
I gigged with one for around 2 years in a cover band before I got an AxeFX II. It did great covering a wide variety of musical styles in that situation.
Just a home noodler and the 11R is still my main piece of jam gear. I've had Helix, Stomp, and FM3 but the 11R is still my primary because I only need a handful of sounds and it's dialed in and my ears are used to it. I think it still sounds great and I really like the visual POD Farm style UI on the computer software.
FINALLY. I've been asking for an 11r for years now Fluffy Poo. Thank you (: (Im biased because its what I still run in my home and stage) I run it with a POD 500x as a midi controller, and run the 11r into the orange pedal baby if im using a stage cab instead of direct. Plus the 500x acts as a back up if the 11r ever takes a shit. I'm going on 10 years with mine. Only issues are user errors through my own mistakes.
I worked in a guitar shop for close to 20 years and had some great chats with reps, one being from Headrush and a cool fact about that Eleven Rack, its source code is what is driving the Headrush Pedalboard. What no one really knows is that the original models within the Eleven Rack are not far off from the quality of the models used today, they were just bottlenecked by the amount of computer power and storage/memory they could put into a consumer priced product. The original models of the amps and everything in those early modelers actually needed to be stripped down to fit with the hardware they had to use. While it seems like it just took them forever to learn how to properly model the tone stack in an amp, they actually had that figured out back in the 00s, it just took forever for the hardware to come down in price to the point that they could put it into a piece of gear that could be marketed and sold while still being in a price range that would make it actually sell. If they had put the full, unstripped down version of the Eleven Rack into a piece of gear in 2009 it would have been like $5k or something wild like that.
Weirdly enough I had one of these back in the day with the high gain expansion and just purchased one with everything for $120 on reverb. Key to these is to use an IR. Great video Fluff!
I still have one of these! I do still like some of the sounds from it but admit I don't use it any more. This was in that last generation of devices before IR's made their way into units, which IMO was a real turning point. Another old piece of gear that was sooo ahead of its time was the Line6 Vetta II, either the head or the combo. I never liked them direct, but mic'd they were insane! They have 2 completely independent amp chains. I've still got my Vetta II combo and it sounds killer, but again only mic'd up. The direct was still before IR's were built-in. I still love this thing, but the lack of a computer editor kinda kills it, at least for me. But that's one I think you might get a kick out of trying.

Regarding the comment about the XLR input at 2:45: All versions of Line 6’s POD X3 series had XLR inputs. The rack version had TWO. They came out in 2007-2008. Line 6 was actually first.
This was my gateway to more modern modelers. The interface is actually really easy to use, not a lot of menu diving required. Sonically it was a big leap forward from earlier units. The downside is the cabinet simulation wasn't as good as later impulse responses. Also love the relatively deep cut Silverchair!
Nice overview Fluff. I actually still own one though I loaned it to my stepdaughter for her to use for home practice and recording at home. Bought it years ago new and got Pro Tools with it free (which made one basically free). The True-Z input was revolutionary in that it would adjust the input impedance based on the amp model selected to make it more responsive. Pretty cool! Models were great. I did get some hi gain rigs with it but not really for de tuned uber heavy stuff. FWIW, the Headrush stuff is basically the “new Eleven rack” as the modeling was done using the original modeling data but the newer processors were better able to translate it! Sounds even better!!
Okay, how funny, I just picked one up locally (mint condition) for $200 Canadian. So, that’s like $50usd, right? 🤭 Anyway, for the price of a pedal, it’s beyond good. Great effects, some very useable tones (especially the Soldano patch). Glad I snagged one.
Still have one and love it. Great for late night, quiet playing. Can also be used with a 4 cable method and true tube pre and power amps as an effects processor.
This is so cool! I have one and use it for its effects and cab sim. I like to run external preamps like my Peavey Rock Master and Rocktron Pro GAPs into it for the cab sims. Sounds excellent!!
I think what has really improved in the digital world these past few years is the low end. It just tends to completely fall apart for high gain stuff. And that was a very common thing in these last gen processors. Even when it came out and got to try it, I was underwhelmed by it and didn’t see it as being much different than a pod back then
I had one of these a few years ago, but I gave it to a buddy and I've kicked myself ever since. It had the Rivera amp pack installed and those were the 2nd best high-gain models I've ever played, beaten only by Otto Audio Eleven Eleven.
I've got the 'bookends' of guitar processors...a 2001(ish) Vox tonelab and a 2022 Empress Zoia. Like going from a wwi biplane to an f-22 Raptor. Both are great!
this thing was especially cool for reamping as you could just hook it up in 4 cable method and get the DI from the DAW playing in your amp without any additional gear. the impedance auto matched and the AD/DA converters sound really good.
Fluff for 270 on Reverb it's a steal. It's a Headrush for dirt cheap. Best Petrucci tone I've ever heard came from DIngle. Anyone remember that dude? Dave Ingle and he loved Bugera? Best Dream Theater patch's out there for digital
I had mine in use in the studio, in the rehearsal room, even live on stage! I still regret it that I let it go … but it was huge and took a lot of space
I ran a small UK trade show with AVID when these first came out and at the time they were a big deal. We filled a room full of people who came to check these out.
The Headrush units are based on Eleven Rack. At least initially when they came out, they said you could import the presets. Not sure if that is still the case.
I bought one a couple of years ago and track with it still today. Try putting a cab IR on the track you are recording into. That makes a difference in your sound.
I used mine with the 4 cable method into a 1x12 blackstar combo for a really long time. The fun thing about the eleven rack was that you could enable cabinet resonance. So my 1x12 could have the punch and rumble of a 4x12 which sounded huge
I waited till Sweetwater closed these out and got mine for 150 bucks. Sadly i'm lazy and I've only used it a few times. But I was always impressed with how it sounds.
I remember wanting one of these but getting the Digitech GSP1101 instead because it was smaller and a lot cheaper - had some decent high gain tones and let you load your own IRs too
I still have 2 of these, one in my recording studio and one in my travel rig. The unit is still very usable. There are ways to still get and use the software, it is a little tricky, but I prefer it over the front panel controls. I think it sounds best if you use more recent IR's with it when recording and it has been used on many of my client's albums.
Honestly, a lot of those would still sound good in a mix. I think the worst part of some of them was the onboard reverb. With some nice reverb I could see the higher gain ones being pretty servicable
I got the Eleven Rack as soon as it was released. $1000 at GC. I used it for 15 years in a Rush tribute. It’s hugely underrated!
Not to forget that the update that was made had a lot of new amp for high gain like the Soldano patch and the moded JCM 800 patch

It's my main rig, great tones in there! The cab sim for the 25w Celestion GB is the best cab in there for sure.

I still have mine. It was my first experience with a rackmount modeler. I loved that thing and used it for a long time.
I make melodic death metal, and I used this to record all of my guitar, bass, and vocals for my first album last year. This thing is super underrated

I had this in a 4U Gator case with a Furman power conditioner. Then used the FCB1010 midi controller and a Machie SRM450 as my main rig for 8yrs..

i still use mine. occasionally... but i still love it. make sure you turn on the option, for the knobs to go to 11

Had mine for years. I ended up adding a mooer radar IR loader pedal to run the cabinets.

I've been using it for two years in combination with a Harley Benton GPA 100, and it sounds great.....I would recommend trying the Singtall presets

I've got the 'bookends' of guitar processors...a 2001(ish) Vox tonelab and a 2022 Empress Zoia. Like going from a wwi biplane to an f-22 Raptor. Both are great!
this thing was especially cool for reamping as you could just hook it up in 4 cable method and get the DI from the DAW playing in your amp without any additional gear. the impedance auto matched and the AD/DA converters sound really good.
Fluff for 270 on Reverb it's a steal. It's a Headrush for dirt cheap. Best Petrucci tone I've ever heard came from DIngle. Anyone remember that dude? Dave Ingle and he loved Bugera? Best Dream Theater patch's out there for digital
I had mine in use in the studio, in the rehearsal room, even live on stage! I still regret it that I let it go … but it was huge and took a lot of space

I ran a small UK trade show with AVID when these first came out and at the time they were a big deal. We filled a room full of people who came to check these out.
The Headrush units are based on Eleven Rack. At least initially when they came out, they said you could import the presets. Not sure if that is still the case.

I bought one a couple of years ago and track with it still today. Try putting a cab IR on the track you are recording into. That makes a difference in your sound.

I still have one of these. The JCM 800 model -> ART MPA Gold Tube Pre -> ART Pro VLA Tube Comp (double tracked) sounds massive.
I love mine. For live you have to use 4 cable method. Great sounds for recording.

I used mine with the 4 cable method into a 1x12 blackstar combo for a really long time. The fun thing about the eleven rack was that you could enable cabinet resonance. So my 1x12 could have the punch and rumble of a 4x12 which sounded huge

I waited till Sweetwater closed these out and got mine for 150 bucks. Sadly i'm lazy and I've only used it a few times. But I was always impressed with how it sounds.

As a former 11Rack owner who now plays through a Headrush Pedalboard, I can tell you that the HR is an 11Rack on steroids...
I remember wanting one of these but getting the Digitech GSP1101 instead because it was smaller and a lot cheaper - had some decent high gain tones and let you load your own IRs too
I still have 2 of these, one in my recording studio and one in my travel rig. The unit is still very usable. There are ways to still get and use the software, it is a little tricky, but I prefer it over the front panel controls. I think it sounds best if you use more recent IR's with it when recording and it has been used on many of my client's albums.
I wish the expension pack was still available for it! The headrush is light years better now, but the 11r has a lot of charm!
Honestly, a lot of those would still sound good in a mix. I think the worst part of some of them was the onboard reverb. With some nice reverb I could see the higher gain ones being pretty servicable
