  • IARC's Dr Isabelle Soerjomataram presents the tobacco free generation initiative, one of the Tobacco Endgame Strategies, as a new IARC-led study has been published showing that prohibiting the sale of tobacco to people born between 2006 and 2010 could prevent 1.2 million lung cancer deaths by 2095
This study, the first of its kind, shows that more than 40% of all lung cancer deaths could be avoided in this generation if tobacco smoking were eliminated, strengthening the evidence that adopting endgame strategies beyond the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) could significantly reduce deaths from lung cancer in young generations.
Lung cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and cause of cancer death worldwide; it is responsible for approximately 1.8 million deaths per year. Tobacco smoking is the most important risk factor for lung cancer and in 2019 was estimated to cause more than 67% of lung cancer deaths globally.
