I am honored to know Jeff, and I can tell you that I truthfully know very few people as knowledgeable as he is regarding geology, and prospecting. One of my customers went on his last outing and came back with a handful of nuggets. He was using a metal detector, and had a wonderful informative and profitable time. Become a premium member, Jeff deserves our support considering the education he provides to everyone via his fantastic videos.

Iv gotta give you alot of credit, because theres not many people on youtube teaching things like this as good as you do. You keep it interesting which makes a persons brain a sponge to learn more than usual. I have personally been on a random education hunt, iv just embarked on fireworks manufacture and chemistry, now im learning this, stuff they dont teach in schools, an the history involved is very intriguing. But also the history is very important, and important that its never forgotten. Many have died in mines making what we today call slave change but that was good money back then. Schools are more worried about confusing children on their sexual preferences, not stuff like this.

I agree the stamp mill should be in a museum and restored to working order as an educational tool. Just an idea but maybe could raise a fund to buy it and move to to a place where some volunteers could restore it. I'd like to see it demonstrated.
Jeff -- so thanks for the educational information its really instructional and I always wanted to be a geologist, maybe not specifically a gold miner but I do really like the explanations and why its important.

I'm surprised when I look at the map(slooow map!) it shows potential basically mountain view road and up towards the hills... and basically all along up around the lake and along 68. I guess I just go explore past mountain view and look for the rocks and dry riverbeds that might have potential lol. I'm surprised there's a placer claim just off the parkway up past the fire station area.

i've taken two geology classes - long ago- and am still learning. books usually seem to have examples of "perfect" minerals and almost never have examples of rocks in between two or more varieties. learning about faults, dikes, and mining operations is confusing from both books and videos. it seems that actual viewing tours works better. strikes, dips, and interpreting mine layout maps seems even harder. does anyone know of free geology and mining classes online?

Good one Jeff. You might need some deliverance though. The soup of rocks. I was in a mineral club for a while, a zillion names for rocks. What I learned is you learn rock by places, and start to recognize them. It is a big subject, thanks for helping to know what rocks to look for and why. I live in Virginia by the Gold belt.

Below a critical size, Gold -- or any metal -- looks Black.
(Carlin deposits are the classic example of a gold deposit that can't be seen with the naked eye. With Carlin gold, the shiny is trapped inside a sheath that hides it. You have to mill the ore first and then you can assay it.)
But, it's also the case that ultra-fine free mill Gold will look Black when it's riding with magnetite and other iron ores. By ultra-fine I mean gold so tiny that you HAVE to use a micro-scope or chemical assay means to detect it. Even so, like Carlin gold, the total amount can surprise you.
When the Gold first rose to the surface -- probably in a pluton -- then off into some dike -- its absolute concentration would be amazingly low. It took complex geo-chemistry for it to re-concentrate to the point that pickers and nuggets were formed. But it stands to reason that only a fraction of the ascending gold ever 'condensed' into visible gold: nuggets, pickers, flakes,... The larger the nugget, the slower the condensation process. Some hefty nuggets figure to have taken millennia to crystallize out.
Assuming this is the case, one is well advised to take a second look at magnetite cons. The cyanide process ought to be spot testing such heavies, to see if anything is getting by.
Further, the tinier the gold flake is, the more it stops behaving like gold. It starts to float on water -- surface tension -- and it goes much further down stream than you'd expect. It just refuses to behave like the heavy metal that it really is.
What this means is that should you find a pay streak -- especially in a dry (desert) deposit look further 'down stream' and sample the magnetite to be found there. It figures to look blank to the naked eye -- even a jeweler's loupe, while still having enough gold to react with NaCN solution.
Like anything, results will be hit or miss.
Just remember that the Carlin deposit is the largest play in the USA right now -- and stood undiscovered for a century -- because each particle required a microscope to spot, and milling to even begin an assay. It's now thought that there is more Carlin gold than any other deposit type in the Western USA. The big hang-up being that the rest of the play figures to plunge DEEP under overburden.
Hey, maybe robots will change the mining equation. They tend to be so brave.
