Hey my man, you are very talented. I am very flattered at your level of work, you have pictures that I don’t even have. Do I deserve it? Incredible, thank you for all your great work and the extensive time you put into this
Back in the day Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu had a very limited leg lock game, it was guys like Dean Lister and Erik Paulson in the late ‘90s - early ‘00s that incorporated Sambo, Shooto and Catch Wrestling leg locks into Modern Jiu-Jitsu.
I love Dean, been a big fan of his since 2003. Guy is ahead of the curve with most of his ground game. I hope his injuries can heal up and he get have a few more matches before he retires for good. I took classes from him in 2009, and I still use the techniques he taught that day.
Dean has some cool stories. also, it’s crazy how quickly ideologies can change within a community. To think there was a time when a coach could completely cut ties with a student because he liked nogi and did leg locks. 😂
"there was a time when a coach could completely cut ties with a student because he liked nogi and did leg locks." On the flip side, my BJJ teacher cut ties with me because I objected to a student training in our BJJ gi class without a gi.
Im just a regular, go to work everyday, nondiscript scrub. Met Dean in PB and you couldn't find a more friendly, respectful, humble man. Great example of a true fighter and gentleman. Osssss!!
Alec...like i felt your channel was always underrated... always good techniques and not everyone seemed to know about...but these mini documentaries are 🔥🔥🔥 Really killing it. ... maybe do a documentary on "little guys defeating giants"...and slip in that match when you choked that giant from TLI (willie? purple belt?? ;))
I remember rolling with him when he was at Fabio's in San Diego (back in 96, 97), my goal was to always last longer than 15 or 20 seconds before he submitted me. I'm glad Dean is getting some appreciation.
Yeh, dude is a beast and what I like is he epitomizes the idea of a martial artist. Got bullied, found somewhere to train, took it to the highest levels. It's Karate Kid but with knees getting blown out and heads cut off. Legend.
First time I saw him was on the ultimate fighter tv show. He was a trainer on the Tito Ortiz team. Shamrock got into an argument with Tito and Dean was in the middle trying to calm them and I remember thinking I’ve never seen such a square chin and how the hell could anyone knock him out. 😂
Tito Ortiz picked him to be his assistant coach on TUF Season 3, praising him as the best jiu-jitsu guy in the world at that time. He prevented a real fight between Tito and Ken Shamrock that was about to emerge from a shouting match on the show.
BJJ people hate leg locks, being stacked and slammed, and small joint manipulation. If you do BJJ think about these things along with your lack of mobility and your vulnerability on the ground.
100% plus I didn’t speak the language and USA invaded their country. They didn’t like me being there. Eventually I would find them one on one and they wouldn’t say shit. It was always in groups or pairs when I had problems, like most bullies! I can tell the experience made you stronger, I think we are blessed that this happened to us. It can happen to any culture or any race, it’s how we react that’s most important imo.
@@listerdean2332Is that you, Mr. Lister? It is an honor to get a reply from you. I watched you on TUF Season 3. And you are right that it is up to us to take our negative short-term experiences and turn them into something positive in the long-run.
Right, as if catch wrestlers weren't promoting leg locks years and decades before this. Funny that a bjj guy needs to hear from another supposed bjj player for it to sink in. People really need to be done with the bjj term, unless you're sticking to that style and rules -- gi, etc.
Just another dorky guy talking smack and smearing Seagal. Unfortunately there's alot of those idiots. One of Seagal's specialties are wrist locks. Not only did Seagal brake Sean Connery's wrist, he almost broke Luke Rockhold's wrist, so I don't understand the whole Seagal is a fraud thing, Rockhold is an actual ((fighter)) and said don't let Seagal get ahold of your wrist. I mean do people think Rockhold was payed to say that or something? No, plus, other ((fighters)) like DC, Anderson Silva and Machida have had personal interactions and training with Seagal. All of them had nothing but respect and don't you think one or more of them would've came out and called Seagal out on his teachings if they thought he was a fraud??.
I met Mr Seagal and he was a class act. He asked my name and I said I’m Dean Lister and he repeated my name 2 times. Like he wanted to remember it or something. Plus he is a huge man!

@@AlecBauldingI love the Bernardo reference
Dean, if this is really you, thank you for mentioning Jerry. I miss that man a great deal, he was a father to a lot of us, especially me.

Amazing content. Dean doesn’t get the love he deserves. One of the best fighting Jiu jitsu practitioners ever.
Happy to celebrate an early pioneer of the sport
To be fair, he took most of the leg locks from Catch Wrestling. Good for him to put it in BJJ. But it was always there.
Sick video. Honestly you did him pretty dirty with that thumbnail pic with him looking haggard as hell

happy to share his story with everyone
Idk if you realize that those vids help BJJ grows so much. People who are new to a sport absolutely love storytelling like that.
Lots of forgotten heroes in bjj and other grappling arts who's stories never get told
