See what I have growing in my edible garden this Autumn (May 2020). My garden is constantly changing so I’m excited to finally document the growth! It’s amazing to look back at old photos and see how much has changed since we moved in. I am currently growing food in containers, pallet planters, makeshift garden beds in the driveway and slowly turning my grass into edible gardens. It is all a work in progress and I am constantly expanding my gardens and my knowledge to create my urban homestead. When we first purchased our property it had one tiny lemon tree and a few ornamental grasses along the back fence.
I now have over 15 fruit trees and many other edibles all throughout the garden. I have noticed so many insects and birds starting to frequent my yard and that makes me so happy! Diversity in plants and animals makes for a happy ecosystem.
You do not need to have the “perfect” place to grow food it is important to get to know your surroundings and just start by growing a few things. It’s all part of the journey and you will continue to learn and develop along with your garden. I hope you enjoy this video and get inspired to grow more of your own food.

Wow! It's amazing how much your garden has changed since this video. Keep up the great work. It's so rewarding!
I know right! And upgraded my camera. Small steps 🌱
The plant you called dill is what my Italian mother in law calls - wild fennel. She makes an amazing wild fennel polenta!!!
Hey Holly. I’m thinking of relocating to Perth. I’m keen in knowing what grow in there and what doesn’t grow. I love gardening. Your support much appreciated. And sides note which suburb or area are good for growing food.
Hi Agnes, Perth is a great place to grow food but just need to adjust to the climate. It’s very hot and dry especially in summer!! And the soil is very Sandy and poor. I feel like we can grow almost anything really…. if you create shade and improve soil you are good to go! Perth is a very spread out city so choosing a location is very much dependent on what you enjoy doing..beach, bush walks etc and where you will need to work. Take a look at some of my latest videos to see more of what I grow 🌿🌸
Love this Holly! So many great and inspiring ideas. I live in Perth too, I have now subscribed to your chanel. Look forward to watching all your future updates and videos. I noticed you put hay over the garden beds, do you do that instead of using just mulch? Thank you Holly ☺️
Thank you for watching! I use pea straw mainly but did use some hay as it was all I could get at the time. Hay lasts longer but doesn’t provide any real nutrients like the pea straw. I do use mulch on most of my fruit trees and garden though.
Hey Holly, your video is so inspiring! You mentioned a permaculture course. Can you recommend any in Perth? Thanks and much love
Thank you! This one is quite old now 😅 I did it with PEAs permaculture and it was great!
The Hill's give some great soil and produce, had to search to find Perth Gardening and found this :) - This may have been mentioned before, but South African accent or similar?.. just to my ears I can hear something.
Yay! Be sure to check out some of my more recent tours. I am Kiwi 🥝🌿
@@SustainableHolly I'm already watching your catalogue and please accept my apologies for my mistake.
Thanks for sharing :) we are working on our self sufficient garden in WA too, looking forward to seeing more video! Enjoy your weekend ✌
Thank you! Yay how exciting!! It’s such a rewarding journey 🌱
@@SustainableHolly thankyou, very true, it feels like the way of the future. Food security is comforting in uncertain times, it's piece of mind for you and your family :) keep up the great work
Definitely! Also just being able to know that the food you are feeding your family is actually healthy and nutrient dense. It’s quite scary when you go down the rabbit hole of industrialised food production!
That's very true! Too much nasty stuff in so many everyday foods now. My Grandmother used to say, " if her parents wouldn't recognise it as food or something they could grow, don't eat it"
Sound advice it seems! Hope you get some rain, enjoy the weekend!
I too am in Perth thank you for sharing
Thanks Ebony! Oh yay Perth is definitely a good place to be!
Soo inspiring love it!!!🙌 I have never tried a kumquat so I am excited to try some soon. Any plans on putting in a tamarillo?? 😁
Hey Alesha thank you 😊 I have stopped and thought about it multiple times when I’m at the nursery but we do get some strong winds so I’m not sure if it would be too happy. But maybe once my trees are more established there would be better shelter. I’m always up for giving things a go haha.
Love it ❤️ so inspiring!!!
jessica langston thank you!! Glad you got some inspo 🌱
15:40 - Hardenbergia, Get rid of it or be forever maintaining it and what it throws out, yes it's a lovely purple flower until it appears everywhere and starts choking out your whole property! . Seriously it's an invasive weed!.
good to watch something "real" unlike all the tv shows
Oh thank you!
Awesome. You should look into the Back to Eden Method it might help.
Thank you!
Looks lovely ♥️
Thank you 🌱
Also in Perth. What a great channel ❤ cool gardens!
