The lack of planning or any sort of logistics when aiming to boil a pan of water outdoors at zero degrees is outstanding - my faith in man is restored!
Thanks Hedley! I think I probably ruined whatever credentials I may have appeared to have as an even slightly competent outdoorsman on this trip! Watching this back I amused myself with the contrast between the carefree wandering around at the start of the video (that "I have all the time in the world!" attitude...) then about half an hour later the realisation that actually it had become really bloody cold, and trying to cook a meal in those conditions was a bit of a stupid idea!
Hi Tweedy. Your politeness towards sheep was very endearing. Such a lovely, relaxing stroll across the magnificent South Downs. Compellingly stunning. On our walks my wife and I resort to home made foil wrapped sandwiches and a flask. Your outdoor cooking puts us to great shame. Perhaps this time your recipe was a tad ambitious! Probably best described as “eccentrically bonkers”. 🥴😂 Brave attempt. 👏👏👍🍷😀
I think foil wrapped sandwiches and a flask of hot tea are an incredibly sensible way of doing things! I really like having hot food outdoors on cold days but thinking about it that could probably be achieved far more easily with a Thermos flask filled with soup or even macaroni cheese!
@@tweedyoutdoors We do lament not having hot food on a winter walk. Roll on your next “cold” outdoor adventure 🥶 where you bring out your thermos of soup and macaroni cheese. 👍😀
Tweedy.......outside of fancy London we have things called hats and gloves to keep us warm....!!!....all joking aside that was another great explore ,that dew pond was so beautiful.....thanks once again for some quality entertainment your style and delivery is spot on....
Loved the skies, both sunset and night. Loved the cooking, even if unsuccessful. Especially liked the sense of aimless walking, which often happens to us even when we are following a route. The stand out was the image of the dewpond, I could see that as a print of on a Christmas card. Thank you. Stay warm.
Thanks Chris! Yes I found that dew pond really captivating too. I wish I had sat there to do my cooking, even if it was right next to the South Downs Way!
The scenery was just breathtaking. Particularly liked the pond with sheep and views across countryside. Thank you! Would be very concerned walking in the dark due to footing. Glad you made it back!
This must have been filmed in SenseVision - it made me feel cold watching it! That dew pond was so beautiful. Stunningly so. Incidentally, I learnt this week that you're not allowed to scare animals with a drone, but no such regulations exist regarding handheld cameras. So you're in the clear with those sheep and they seemed to get used to you pretty quickly, anyway. Probably recognised you as that chap off UA-cam. You're a brave man eating that meal, Tweedy. And there really was something Dickensian about you drinking from a pan, whilst shivering with cold. Well done! Chips must have been the best chips ever after all that.
I also found watching this back how that sense of being cold came through in the video, which is interesting, because in your last video there was actually snow on the ground, and although you were perhaps not in the best of moods due to work related issues, you didn't actually seem to show any noticeable signs of being cold! Yes I was really struck by the dew pond too. In hindsight I should have just sat there to cook, it probably would have been a bit more sheltered, and I would have had a better view of the sunset. It was very close to the South Downs Way which a surprising number of people had been walking on during this outing but it's ridiculous trying to be "stealthy" to just cook a meal outdoors - who would actually care? Where I ended up sitting a chap walked right past me with his dogs. One of the dogs came up to sniff around my food, his owner called him back: "No Champagne for you, Charlie!" (I might have misremembered the dog's name). I obviously wanted to correct the gentleman that it wasn't in fact Champagne, it was English sparkling, but I suspect that would have given him even more of a sense of me being a ridiculous idiot than he likely already had! The soup might not have looked very appealing, but it really wasn't terrible! It seemed impossible to reach a boil, but the water probably had been at "sous vide" sort of temperatures for at least 15 minutes, maybe longer. So this is probably the sort of thing you'd pay £50 for in a fine dining restaurant! Although they would likely have central heating. That said, yes indeed the chips were some of the best I've ever had.
Whilst watching I started thinking about Ernest Shackleton, no idea why 🤣. I'd recommend a back-up flask of something warm, for when plan A doesn't quite work. And not so much ascending and descending when it's slippery under foot and you're alone. Great video though, some lovely shots of a cold winter evening. Keep up the sterling work.
Thanks Genghis! Perhaps an air of Captain Oates "I am just going outside and may be some time."...? I assure you I do actually have very strong instincts of self preservation, despite the slightly precarious scenes sometimes seen in my videos! When descending that hill I was crouched so low I was almost sat down, and one hand was on the ground.
I entirely agree - who would have thought just walking up a hill, making some soup (or attempting to) and walking back down again would be so challenging...?!
Does look cold Tweedy and it sure took a while to heat the soup. The sheep looked in great condition (we kiwi’s notice this sort of thing ) 😂. Hope you have a great week. Cheers Dave 🇬🇧 🇳🇿
What a night sky! It must have made it all the worthwhile. At one point you had a planet just above you. All that dew pond needed was Jack Hargreaves to be leading his pony around it. Going out without a full gas bottle will have offended Edesia but she took pity on you and threw a chippy in your path - I was looking for a Roman god of soup, or greek, but I must have offended Wikipedia and could only find Edesia, the Roman goddess of food!! You did well to get down off the downs in one piece. Have a great weekend!!
Thanks David! Yes it was definitely a bad bit of planning on the gas front. I had actually bought a large canister earlier in the day, and then used that to partly refill an empty small one, but I only seem to be able to get them to at best half full that way. I wasn't carrying a lot of weight (as I wasn't planning to camp) so I should have just brought the large canister along! Oh well, as you say the gods took pity on me and provided that chippy... and they were really excellent chips.
It was a great video. I recall cooking over a fold away stove using solid fuel and mess tins!! I suspect you need a higher pressure to fill your bottle. If you do a New Forest one, then my nephew has a chippy in Ringwood, "Prices Fish and Chips" they do deliveries too, not sure if "underneath that oak tree, by the stream" will do though!!
Ah just the thing for a cold hill top, vaguely warm soup :) But that chippy looked a proper job me ansum. Oops sorry, wrong part of the world. You were making me feel cold on that hill, despite sitting in front of a roaring fire. Great vid.
Excellent as always Mr tweedy you really should do a gear vid was up Ditchling this morning came home and watched you sitting there freezing sipping your soup thanks appreciate it look forward to the next one
Beautiful! I'm in the process of catching up with some of your recent work, so stay tuned for a few more comments. I'm looking forward to the collaboration stuff with good old WC21 from Yorkshire. Btw: It was SO great to see you two film together - a perfect match of similar yet different styles!
Thanks Matt! Perhaps this is one of those times where the video is a bit more fun to watch than the actual experience of making it! That said I was having a great time at the start, while I was still moving, but it was a bit naive of me to think I could sit still for an hour or so on an exposed hilltop in freezing conditions and not end up feeling very cold!
It's always fun to watch another suffer:) Hahaa, atleast you made light of it. I find gas isn't so good in cold weather, perhaps time to upgrade to either a liquid feed gas stove or a petrol one if you intend more cold weather alfresco cooking:) It was worth staying to the end to see the chips. Ohhh the chips :)
Shame the bright moon ruined the starry sky! Would of been a really nice sky. Tweedy, what about a rather stylish fedora or country hat, for keeping your noggin warm?😊
You could do with an emergency trangia stove and one of those little cross pieces that sits on top just for this sort of emergency. Good luck with your next adventure
I actually had a backup BCB stove with me, but they're not particularly great in cold weather either, and I made an executive decision at that point that as I had something which was just about edible (and warm!) I'd be better off just cutting my losses and heading back to civilisation!
Très charmant… in a “bit of a failure” sort of way. I’d echo another comment: a little trangia alcohol burner might be a useful backup and (arguably) a bit more in keeping with the Tweedy aesthetic. Goodness, the feeling of cold came through. Tweedy blanket, anyone? What a sky though. (Side note: I think I recognise that tree and dew pond as a “much photographed” South Downs subject). Carry on.
Thanks Barry! I did have a backup BCB stove with me, but I just decided to call it quits at that point, as I had something just about edible and I just wanted to pack up and get moving!
Thanks for the chilly video, I am am surprised that you do not have a pair of gloves in your bag. Does your headtorch have enough charge otherwise it will be Tweedy in the Dark. Thanks again for the effort. 👍
Thanks Ysgolgerlan! Yes a pair of gloves on this occasion would have been a very good idea. I think I had been lulled into a false sense of security that it actually felt relatively warm when the sun was still up... A lesson learned for next time!
My head didn't ever feel particularly cold, but there is that old fact about losing some percentage or other of heat through your head, so maybe that would have been a good idea... I definitely wished I had taken a pair of gloves!

Love it. "Weird Soup" on the menu. You gave that a good attempt for sure. Cheers, Warren :)

Almost too good condition...? 🤨
"Tweedy on a swing" - a moment of serenity... and hilarity!! ;-)
Thanks Paul, it's a really nice spot and impossible to resist having a go on the swing!
Your endless good humour is very entertaining. That soup looked shocking but you kept at it - top effort.
Thanks Rob! It was good to test the limits a bit but I do always try to see the funny side when things go wrong like this!
Serious chip envy here !
They were excellent chips - if you ever find yourself in Hassocks...
Everybody loves a happy ending.
You are talking about chips, right...?
Of course

You did look chilly!
Thanks Dan! Now you mention it, it does look like a dog bowl. Sometimes I think we're being conned with camping gear!
You could do with using a different gas canister. One that is a gas mix rather then just butane. Especially in the cold.
