  • Roads? Where we’re going we DO need roads! But, sadly, any motorist can tell you that no road is perfect, and some are a whole lot worse than others. Some are riddled with potholes, others are built on bridges on the verge of collapse, and some see such exposure to the elements that they become undrivable. So buckle up for today’s video, where we countdown the top 15 road infrastructure fails!

The Dalton is an important road for the mines and energy fields in Northern Alaska. I will agree the interchange in Duluth is horrible

The Can of Worms is gone now - they've been working on a new interchange for several years now & are planning on replacing the Blatnik Bridge over to Superior in the near future. I think the interchange project should be done in 2024 or 2025. The lack of snow & warm temps has been helpful for construction (they were planning on working in winter anyway). They are only using right exits this time, so no confusing knot of bridges.

I’ve lived in Duluth for +35 years and while I get tired of the constant construction on the freeway, I’m glad the can of worms is changing. My car was totaled by a driver from out of town who got confused and panicked in 2014… I’ve dealt with severe nerve damage since then. I’m pretty happy with the timing too, as my son just got his drivers license 😅 there are plenty of other places that make me nervous for him, especially now that winter is here! Nothing quite as confusing as the can of worms though..

I am on the Range & haven't been down by the Can of Worms since construction started - but from what MNDOT & WDIO has shared, it looked like demolition was done & now they are building the new exits/bridges. I never found the Can of Worms confusing since I was usually just following highway 53 to cross the bridge if I was on it & as long as I was in the correct lane, I didn't have a problem. I have friends who hated it because they always accidentally ended up in Wisconsin 😂
Excited to see what the Blatnik Bridge replacement looks like! The bridge is older than I am (I'm 51), so it definitely needs the replacement. I heard how many vehicles travel across it every day & it's a crazy high number! I assume the Bong Bridge helped with the daily traffic. I remember when it was built & have used it - but the Blatnik Bridge is more convenient when I am following 53 down to Eau Claire.

When driving the Dalton Highway, like many other roads in the far north, smart drivers carry a Naval Emergency Beacon or a satellite phone. At least on The Dalton there is some traffic. Ny brother luces in Faro, Yukon. That is about 6 hours north-east of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. On many days there may only be one vehicle doing the drive. There are two routes, and only one small hamlet along each of the routes, where the roads to Faro meet the Alaska Highway. Yes, he does keep an emetgency beacon in the truck.

3:38 Duluth's Can of Worms has been under replacement construction for a while now. Fun that it made the list on the video! I live an hour north & haven't been to see the construction first hand, but the Duluth tv stations give updates as does MNDOT online. I think the Can of Worms bridges are all gone now & they are working on building the new bridge/highway system. Whenever I used it, I was usually headed across the bridge to/from Duluth/Superior & the signage was clear to me since I was just staying on highway 53 the whole time & just had to stay in the right lane - but there were many accidents on the interchange bridges on the news. Curved bridges are never helpful in Northeastern Minnesota winters! Unfortunately, MNDOT seems to like them statewide. Hopefully, the new design will be less confusing for everyone!
4:34 the video has some photos of the Can of Worms, but it uses other highway/bridge video as the narrator is talking.

I have friends who were afraid of driving near the Can of Worms when we were teenagers & in our early 20s because a few of them accidentally ended up in Wisconsin on the ramps/bridges & once you were on the lane to the bridge, you couldn't get off until you got to Superior & could turn around 😂. I knew my way around, so I would joke with them & ask them what way to go 😂 Duluth has 2 bridges across to Superior now. My cousin is almost 50 & she doesn't like to cross the bridge into Duluth because the city driving & multiple highways scare her - I have driven over the bridge a few times so she could follow me across.
They are going to replace the older bridge over to Wisconsin - the Blatnik Bridge (or previously called the High Bridge) because it's older than me as it was built in the 1960s. My dad's family is on the Iron Range (including me) & my mom's family is from Central Wisconsin, so I have been over the bridge a gazillion times in my 51 years of life of while shopping & going to visit my aunt's family. I haven't been over the Bong Bridge nearly as much, but I have been on it many times too. The Blatnik Bridge used to have green pillars on the median cement to block headlights when I was really young - my older siblings used to tell me that the bridge might fly away because of them if the wind was strong enough (gotta love older siblings scaring younger kids). 🤣
It's crazy to hear how many vehicles travel over the bridges & on the highways every day in Duluth & Superior! Updating the roads & bridges is definitely the important thing to do!

The bridge collapsed because the restoration put a single nut on the tower bases to the concrete and the tornado cause the bridge to pull up and shear the new nut off. Note it originally had multiple nuts tightened onto each other to prevent what happened in high wind conditions

Dalton Highway was a important highway in Northern Alaska because it was parallel the Trans-Alaska Pipeline owned by Alyeska Pipeline and this is the main route to deliver cargo from Prudhoe Bay to Fairbanks
The highway was cannot reached through emergency dispatch by Alaska State Troopers because most of the area are out of communication
Until 1981, the highway was only used for Alyeska Pipeline and in 1981 it was took over by the State of Alaska and it was not until 1994 it was opened to general public
Dalton Highway was named after James Dalton, an Alaskan engineer

Number 6, it’s not anyone but the drivers at fault, a driver should know the height of their own truck before going down the road, it’s their fault if they ignore what’s given to them. Tbh revoke their license if they are just that stupid
