+Ed Fulmer Sr You are welcome, it wasnt quite like that with every editor I had during my hugely unsuccessful career, some kept a low profile and placed murder stories on the same page as births, deaths and marriages
+Eileen McHale The battle between good and evil has gone on ever since the Big Bang, the good guys always win, it has to be so, I've read the last chapter
Thank you for that, there were some bold eds, yes certainly existed, equally, I also worked with a few scaredy cats over the years who would put anything contentious on the obits pages, or spike them, because they cared more about pensions than passions, even though their lives were not on the line, good old Boogie eh!
Bogart was an all time great.I use to watch old movies on the weekend as a kid in the 70's.He just had it, you know it when you see it.I have a list of my favorites an Bogart definitely is on that list.Thank you for uploading this an if you can please add more!!!
Very true, once the finger print, micro chip, facial recognition, wire tapping, gets into the hands of the dark side we know that the end is nigh, but those who swallow the right tablets can look forward with hope in their hearts, they will never, never walk alone
Really pleased you enjoyed it, even if no journalists have ever existed as great as Bogie's character, this is what we should ALL strive to become - fearless proclaimers for truth and justice and as free from corruption as possible in a fallen world that seeks to compromise and then neutralise all who try to turn the spotlight on darkness.
It is an irony that newspaper business should be subject to the rules of market. Rather it is sad that newspaper should be a 'business' at all. This movie brings out that fact clearly. Thanks YT and Old Chron.
I was informed by one editor that the key aim of a newspaper was the make money, it was one of those clever richard answers he told new recruits who thought it was to champion the cause of free speech; we must have made a bomb back in the day when everyone bought the Old Chron, I recall a newsroom packed with 20 journos and editorial assistants and a darkroom with five snappers plus an archivist cuttings lady ah, the good old days, when you could pick up a new edition, literally hot off the press . . .
Excellent, fantastic classic movie that I've watched before but this time it made more sense to me and that is the freedom of the press. Thanks for the upload The Old Chron Ed
Good old days when reporters investigated and wrote well compared to now where everyone is a "reporter" and no investigation (googling or looking things up on the internet does not count). Thanks for uploading this :)
How very perceptive of you M, I suppose you have the link the words Investigative Reporter - but today, with huge cut backs in staffing as newsroom get smaller and smaller, and many work from home, its a wonder any news is true. I didnt have the time back in the good old days with plenty of badly paid hacks, so what we did was putting both sides to the same story. That is why we have a strong democratic parliamentary system where the ruling part is held to account and the opposition is not persecuted, put in prison on bumped off - apart from cabinet sackings!
Fantastic film ... many thx for posting ... I'm old enough to have parents who worked for the old press (at rival newspapers!) ... there really was a bottle in every desk, & the news rooms were full of these kinds of flawed knights-errant. Very cool film.
Yes, it's a fantastic film they don't do these days - I mean how exciting does social media get! It was every other desk where I worked, hopeless alcoholics - and that was just the women - who died young, but we are all flawed in some way or another. Lovely to hear about your parent's rivalry, I do hope they told you enough to write a jolly good family history of it all, newspapers, for the most part, will soon as redundant town criers, oyez, but I had the best 40+ years with an interesting job that suited my crazy personality, always different, sometimes scary, but never boring, and, as my editor would remark when I complained about the low pay - its a fun job!
This movie and "The Maltese Falcon" are my two favourite Humphrey Bogart movies. I still like when he says "DARN, THE MAYOR." at 12:41. That's my own favourite Bogie movie quote. Also, I like the sound of the typewriters in the background throughout!!!.
Would it be possible for you to have a go at impersonating Bogie saying "Darn the Mayor" at 12:41! Please record it on video and I will post the link here, matey!
I do have my own videos of voice impressions, but Bogart is one I very rarely do. Also, I don't really sound like him. However, I'm very good at impersonating Walter Brennan's voice!!!.
I loved the line where Bogart said to his female reporter ''I never got to Paris either.'' And I was able to say to him ''Yes you did. You'll always have Paris.''
Well I don't know if they meant you to get the reference but I was quoting one of Bogart's ending lines to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca where he said ''We'll always have Paris. We lost it for a while but we got it back.''
+jack freeman Thanks for that gemJack, what a lovely reference to Casablanca to be picked up by the real aficionados, I wonder if this happens more in film than we know, whats the tie-up - same directors, same script writers or paying tribute to another classic?
+The Old Chron I looked up the writers and they were different Richard Brooks wrote and directed Deadline and Michael Curtiz directed Casablanca which had lots of writers. I feel Casablanca was more than a romantic suspense story. It was a criticism about the U.S isolationist policy at the beginning of the war that eventually stopped when they joined in the fight as per Rick's character.
Just like a good bottle of wine better as time goes on. Damn good acting just damn good acting. Give Bogie any role. Kim Hunter just as good an actress as Bogie an actor in this movie. Classic!!
Even with a faulty picture it is still a great film. They just don't write scripts like that anymore. Bogey and Ethel Barrymore have outstanding screen presence. Direction, cinematography and editing sharp and pacey.
Never seen this before, and slightly embarrassed (I've worked at newspapers and news websites most of my life). Really good movie, with several interwoven storylines that all hold together. One of Bogart's best.
Thanks Michael, fiction here is better than the truth, this is how it should be, all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to mind their own business
"... all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to mind their own business." That's great, I have to remember that. Should be taught in Journalism 101 from now on!
Just spotted your second comment, great one too - sadly newspaper circulations are going down the drain and replaced by social media, but who is gong to cover courthouses, council meetings, who is going to police the police . . . will it be all the trolls and armchair editors?
James Dean had an early role as a copyboy (uncredited) in this. Rienzi is played by Martin Gabel, husband of Arlene Francis, actress & regular on the long-running TV series, What's My Line?
@@TheOldChron Actually, I neglected to mention that Martin Gabel also had many appearances as a panelist on What's My Line, alongside his wife, Arlene Francis

well i don't know how to upload or anything about it. all i can say is i think it's good the sound is real good one thing i like is bogies voice i love this movie. thank you.
+sonia silliker Glad to be of service, this movie is legend and as printed papers decline lets hope it doesn't become a tombstone testament to bygone erra
+sonia silliker When I saw it, as a lifelong hack - now mourning the last rites of printed papers - I had to upload it on my site in tribute to the guys who challenged corruption in high places, Bogie Editor in Chief
Yes it is - it is what we expect of the press, in my experience local newspapers are a lot more down to earth, caring, honest and help more than the gutter rats lurking in the Streets of Shame, but human nature being drawn towards the dark side its a wonder anywhere in the world is perfect.
I knew I saw this one, glad I saw it again. Memory might have been gone, but very few truly know the Greatness of Newsapers from the 1800's. They kept records of an Evangelist whose teachings touched 100's thousands of lives. One Man went to every town searching for those records, and found them, one at a time! The Historical record of events recorded were of great importance, if to one man, then to many. It's sad to think must of everything he found was swept away. Just like many great Newspapers. The English Language was butchered through the years, till 5th grade level predominates society. Thanks for placing this Newspaper back into circulation! It is only for one Day!

"This Paper will fight for progress and reform. We'll never be satisfied with merely printing the news. We'll never be afraid to attack wrong, whether by predatory wealth or predatory poverty." WOW.
soapbxprod That is simply a rewording of a portion of something Pulitzer once said, engraved in legions of stone now. Powerful and profound, I must say sincerely.
When I was a kid, the word went around that because this put Journalism in a bad light, the in print reviews panned this picture, resulting in significant lower box office. I wonder to this day if this was true.
Hmmm I am going to ponder for a while and come back to you, look Cindy, I dont quite understand your thrust, I mean I does not really matter, but thank you for contribution, who knows is my reply, but please when you find the answer please send it to silly old me
How do you find something old and something new at the same time? Bless you YT posters of these classic movies, old but new to me; I've never seen this one even though it's just 2 years younger than me. TYSVM!
Great actors in this one. Quite an assembly of great character actors and not possible today to find such a group. Recognize some of the faces? They were not in the credits. Jim Backus and Dabs Greer just to name a few. Wonderful movie and it is frequently shown, which shows it is not forgotten
Its is a wonderful movie, as a journalist myself I am drawn to his character, if only they were all super heroes like this newsdesk, print and be blessed!
How very kind of you, Bogie would appreciate it, its life in the fast lane surely? An amazing 64, 651 movie buffs have watched my jumpy version so far, I think the motion thing adds a edge to it, don't you?
The other great actor to play a journalist, from the street of shame, is Kirk Douglas in 'Ace in the Hole' who is 100 not out today. Happy Birthday Kirk!
Thank you for this! And ignore those who live cheesy lives so don't understand different times and attitudes and so call older dialogue cheesy and cannot produce anything but abandoned offspring and so must criticize the kind efforts of others.
Hi rink rats, thanks for reaching out and all the best in your YT promotion bid - in answer to you, thanks to Bogie's crusading newspaper, the bad guys have even more of the jitters!
Although this film came out in 1952 so many of its precepts are relevant today. Perhaps even more so. Today we are witnessing the effects of nearly sixty years of social upheaval brought upon by an increasingly self centered and corrupt government where the people we have elected to represent us are far more interested in acquiring more wealth, power and control over our society than ever could be thought possible. These same individuals are aided in their endeavors by news organizations largely owned by conglomerates rather than small individual corporations as in the past. No longer are they interested in the news but rather serve as collective propaganda centers that dispense the same material throughout their spheres of influence. The news itself is no longer important. Rather they clothe their propaganda that will reinforce their agenda as news and dispense that as news, ignoring the news that does not fit their agenda
Jeremiah 12 The Message (MSG)What Makes You Think You Can Race Against Horses? 12 1-4 You are right, O God, and you set things right. I can’t argue with that. But I do have some questions: Why do bad people have it so good? (King James Bible: Why do the wicked prosper?) Why do con artists make it big? You planted them and they put down roots. They flourished and produced fruit. They talk as if they’re old friends with you, but they couldn’t care less about you. Meanwhile, you know me inside and out. You don’t let me get by with a thing! Make them pay for the way they live, pay with their lives, like sheep marked for slaughter. How long do we have to put up with this- the country depressed, the farms in ruin- And all because of wickedness, these wicked lives? Even animals and birds are dying off Because they’ll have nothing to do with God and think God has nothing to do with them.
@@TheOldChron Well, since there is no god, does it matter? We humans are a doomed race. Becoming extinct by our own actions. Enjoy the ride, in 100 years we'll be gone.
@@Hithere-ek4qt Hi there, In less than that you will be gone, you will come face to face with Hashem, then you can sing him 'I did it my way' and act real cool. But there is a better way, repent turn away from a life contemplating the pointlessness of life and extinction, live life to the full, prepare for paradise, save souls along the way, dont just enjoy the ride, gallop into the sunset with a hearty Hi Ho Silver, and rescue the lost.
+Ed Fulmer Sr He caught the spirit of editorship thanks to a fine script and grasped it completely, freedom of the press despite the gutter press is a freedom worth fighting for
Sadly, you are right. Little did we realise that when our typewriters were skipped and replaced with Apple Mac SEs - the type featured in a second hand or pawn shop in Back To The Future - that it was the beginning of the end for Caxton. Just as illuminated manuscript scribes and town criers were replaced by newspapers as literacy increased so too will social media sweep newspapers into the dustbin of history, as a snapper colleague of mine remarked, journalism courses in the UK are about as useful as coal mining apprenticeships.
What is truth? For our Westminster politicians and Prime Minister, anything but. For myself, I very much enjoyed the film, wavy screen too. This film gives me hope that someone, somewhere will tell the truth about our unlawful actions in lands far away. Plastered on the front pages. Perhaps I'm too hoping for too much. As my old workmate would say; "Jonnie, life isn't Hollywood, life is Cricklewood". Thanks for the upload anyway.👍
I find it interesting to note that the most famous or infamous historical figure to ask What is Truth was not Jesus Christ, of whom it was asked, but Pontious Pilate, the Roman Governor, after the Jewish Messiah mentioned the word truth. There is no record of what answer Jesus gave, which is even more interesting, so to speak.
Every NEWS organization should take a look at this flick and take a PAGE from ''The Day''! Nothing can substitute for TRUTH...even an h'alternative' TRUTH is still a LIE! This movie is most relevant now here in the 21st century, 2017, than when it was produced in 1952. Good job!
I just slowed the film down to 0.5 in hopes of catching James Dean in his cameo. It's funny as hell! I didn't catch Dean, but old Humphrey sounds like he's got one hell of a buzz on! It looks like one drunken party at the pressroom!
Knowing ASC Kramer was cinematographer to at least 165 films, many my favorites, 1933-1970, I hope I don't run into another with that rapid drag and drop technique.
We live in hope LL, when all the ills of the world had escaped from Pandora's Box, it was the only thing that was left, but it is more powerful that the gates of hell.
To bad UA-cam software screwed up the video. Great movie. Everyone in the US should be forced to watch this movie! I could not help but think of Trump.
I totally agree, but I really hate the black strips on each of a 4x3 format, it is a debilitating syndrome known as Fourbythreeitis and can lead to munching popcorn madness. Good news is that conversely neanderthals also suffer the same when watching 4x3 format that has been turned into cinemascope, known as Fakewidescreenitis, you see, they just can't get their head around it.
But it's my take on the director's cut, I prefer it chopped off, it adds that noir-noir touch, it is more up front and personal rather than box-clever, totally poli kala pethakimoo approach
Turning this movie off after watching for an hour and a half is like stepping on land after a long sea voyage. My eyes are still rolling, but the room is not.
I am in complete agreement: this is pure and simple good v evil. Good has to defeat evil, the enemy may win a few battles, but good has won the war, I have read the very last chapter and can confirm this bit of of good news.
Wonderful movie. I love Bogart. And this film. But I ask myself, in this day, is there a future for investigative journalists or for "paper" newspapers?
+Miriam Nannetti Never mind social media gossip and out of focus pics will open a brighter future for corrupt councils, courts, police and parliament as their PR handouts will be printed like its gospel - in a word or two....its over
There is no future for anything; the white race has been designated to insure constant change as to eradicate even a semblance of referential perspective; thus: what we know today we know today, and what we learn tomorrow will be good until the day after
“The truth will set you free” is a common saying in academic circles that want to promote academic freedom and the power of learning. Many universities have this statement emblazoned on a sign near the entrance of a building. But “the truth will set you free” did not originate in academia; Jesus said it in John 8:32. In context, Jesus’ statement has nothing to do with classroom learning. In fact, John 8:32 speaks of a higher form of knowledge than is capable of being learned in a classroom. Jesus had just finished a speech at the temple where He delineated differences between Himself and His listeners. “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins” (John 8:23-24). The result of Jesus’ message was that “even as he spoke, many believed in him” (verse 30). Then, in verse 31, Jesus begins to speak just to those who had believed. “Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples’” (John 8:31). True discipleship is more than intellectual assent; those who are “really” followers of Christ will “hold to” His Word. That means they will not only accept His teachings as truth, but they will also obey His teachings. Action is proof of faith (cf. James 2:17). True disciples of Jesus believe that He speaks the truth about God and the Scriptures. They also know that He is who He claims to be. Back in verse 25, the people asked Jesus who He was, and He responded, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.” There may be a tinge of exasperation in His response; He had repeatedly made known that He was the Messiah, the one they had anticipated for many years. Verse 32 begins with, “Then you will know the truth.” “You” refers to those who are true disciples of Jesus. True disciples will know the truth. More than that, their eyes are opened to a greater understanding of the truth (cf. 1 John 5:20).www.gotquestions.org/the-truth-will-set-you-free.html
+roderick sloan Check out the videos on my site, its real journalism sadly not Hollywood. Now living the dream I'm thankful I had one of the first video cameras and decided to record working life on a local newspapers, latterly The Essex Chronicle that was founded way back in 1764, older even than The Times. Never thought they would be seen by anybody but me, then along came You Tube and the rest is history.
Lousy inferior print of what is actually a pretty good film. Not one of Bogart's better known pictures but it's a good one ... If you haven't seen it, well worth sitting through.
I love this movie. After spending roughly two decades in print journalism, I can attest to how people felt about the business, as we saw in "the wake" scene. Considering that this film was produced by 20th Century Fox and is probably in the Fox film archives, I wonder if Fox's current owner, Rupert Murdoch, has ever seen it or not. In one of the opening scenes, Bogey is cynical about the paper which is buying his paper. The buying paper is very much a yellow rag similar to the kind of rag Murdoch publishes in New York and London.
The one part of the storyline that I didn't like was how quickly The Day was going to new ownership (two days after the teletype announcement or the very day after the judge's decision. At the very minimum it should have been 1 to 4 weeks which that would be mandatory today.
1:16:10 -- "We're all aware of what a newspaper consists." Oops. Either the script writers or the actor flubbed here. We need two "of"s. One for "aware of" and one for "consists of": "We are all aware of what a newspaper consists of."
Of course, but having worked on newspapers as a genious OF a journalist, I know exactly what a newspaper consists of - stories and pics, but when it comes to my stories, I would describe them as works of fiction and art, or more precisely artistic licence. I used to buy a licence regularly so that I did not have to let the facts get in the way of a good story.
5:40: the Main Stream Media should learn from this movie...Editor: " ...its not our job to prove he's guilty and we are not in the Crusade business..."
Well said, what you mean is that the media paper should be even-headed and fair to all sides, because nobody keeps on the straight and narrow 24-7 and those who claim to be whiter than white are liars and politicians? I like to tune into BBC, Russia Today and Aljezerah and then form my own opinion on what is truth. What is your take on it Erik?
I have looked at your YT channel but I can only see this exciting announcement: 'This channel doesn't have any content' So John please consider sorting out a 4:3 ratio footage and upload it, hopefully you too will attract hundreds of thousands of viewers. To paraphrase the great man himself "Of all the channels in all the You Tubes in all the world and he has to walk into mine"
A good question - cannot you see that it has given you the opportunity to put your point of view over. Thank God we have all been given free will, imagine if the world was run by those with your views, it would be a strait jacket on my creative genius.
Dear R Battang Battang Biscuit Barrel-Smith, I have taken a deco at your set up and all I can see is this sign 'This channel doesn't have any content' I can only conclude that you are wasting your life merely commenting on others - why not think out of the box and be creative, even if you make a mess, please, I beg you take a giant leap of faith, follow in the footsteps of Indiana Jones, seek and you will find,
The part of him riding in Rienzi's car. He's not afraid of the gangster in the least. Newspapers were good in those days. There will always be some sensationalism no matter what paper it is. And never piss off the editor either. In Arizona that happened in 1987 betwee the paper and the governor and the governor ended up being thrown out of office the following year. There was simply too much dirt to dig up.
Good question ! No doubt when it comes to thinking of news reporting in bygone years, most, including my self, wear spectacles that block out the likes of Rosebud. But there's no doubt (?) that what passes for 'News' in the USA today would be more akin to what would have been 'Lifestyle' type stuff years ago. However, even that could be prejudice on my part. Maybe Woodstein went after Nixon because he was a Republican, so indeed, what is Truth. As Churchill (I think) once pointed out, the freedom of the press has always been ameliorated by the necessity to have enough money to actually own a press :)
The Watergate story was hand fed to Woodward and Bernstein by a man they called Deep Throat, later identified as Mark Felt deputy director ( 2nd in command) at the FBI. In other words Nixon was taken down by the FBI. Woodward and Bernstein were a couple of kids, little more than messenger boys in a much larger conspiracy.
I used to service those old Typewriters long ago, and IF you had seen all the crumpled sheets thrown on the floor, where a Reporter trying to keep a deadline started his new Heading so as to be more aggressive; you would appreciate your Internet a little more!!
I learned journalism on Remingtons, did you service them, wish I had kept mine when they chucked em all in the skip of history. Ah yes, thats where the term 'copy' comes from. . . a sheet of carbon paper was placed between two same size squarish sheets of unlined paper and placed on the typewriter roller where stories were written, often a smokey cigarette would be held to the top of the typewriter by a bent paper clip, something straight out of Kirk Douglas' Ace in the Hole classic cult hack movie. The top copy was placed in the copy tray beside the sub editors, while the bottom copy, which carried the imprint created by the carbon paper, and known as a 'black' was kept by reporter. The top copy was crisp and clear, but the 'black' was smudgy.A sub-editor would then read the top copy, correcting, re-writing by hand if necessary and then place it on a dummy sheet, representing a newspaper page. If there was any dispute about who made an error, once the paper was published, the news editor would go to the reporter's desk and find the 'black' on the spike (a deadly looking spike of metal like a metal coat hanger about six inches long, where the copy was secured) and see if the mistake was the responsibility of the reporter or the sub. I well recall one deputy editor desperate for stories, shouting "Just produce the copy" to us young hacks when he noticed we were taking it easy, papers never paid well, as my favourite editor used to remark when we went cap in hand, pushing at an open door. . . "But it's a fun job!"
GRIFFITH HARLAND replies (Conversation Thread) No! The Reporter wrote the (his) first draft and either used a shoot or a copy boy to get the Report to a Copywriter on the floor above, depending on its urgency of late news. The Reporter used any old scrap he had on his desk. I didn't get much further than the Reporters Room. myself.
Thanks for that Griffith, I suppose there are slight differences, but all this is fast disappearing into history, with papers seeking free copy and photos via social media, because nobody really wants to buy papers or pay to view on line news, the Times they are a changin
You are correct, probably the best known is Jesus Christ who lay down his life at around 33 years of age, Bogart was 57 1899-1957 died from terrible cancer, he was a magnetic man.

Thanks for the upload The Old Chron
Ed
Thanks for that Ed, you don't miss your water until your well runs dry
I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship - Well Walter Brennan's voice will have to do!

I made a Bogie impression video yesterday. If you're interested in watch it!!!.
I liked the character that humphrey bogart played as top editor in the newspaper.
I want to be that editor when I grow up
After watching this movie, I figured how much do I miss the true art of cinematography
Bless you - have your regain the true art yet?
A good film. What a great job of casting. I think that casting is often overlooked when talking about a film.
Casting is so underestimated dont you think. There should be Oscars and awards for Casting methinks.
"A free press. like a free life, is always in danger." BRAVO! brilliant!
Very true - right from the very start, I mean Adam and Eve, eh!
I loved the line where Bogart said to his female reporter ''I never got to Paris either.'' And I was able to say to him ''Yes you did. You'll always have Paris.''
+jack freeman What do you think it actually meant - too deep for me?
+jack freeman Ahh! Casablanca conspiracy theory
wonderful movie...........
ABSOLUTELY
Just like a good bottle of wine better as time goes on. Damn good acting just damn good acting. Give Bogie any role. Kim Hunter just as good an actress as Bogie an actor in this movie. Classic!!
I prefer a cold glass of water, but I totally agree with your sentiments.
Even with a faulty picture it is still a great film. They just don't write scripts like that anymore. Bogey and Ethel Barrymore have outstanding screen presence. Direction, cinematography and editing sharp and pacey.
I think you are steering in the right direction, keep up the comments good or bad
Great acting from all! Had the pleasure of meeting Bogies son Stephen Humphrey Bogart! Dead ringer for his dad! Here's looking like your dad kid!🙂👍👏
Of all the gin joints, you had to bump into SH in that place, cheers!
I stood feet from his wife Lauren Becal! Still great looking when I saw years after Boogie died!
I used to love that show, thank you for this pointer. Gabel really captured in a few minutes the charm of evil and why corruption is so seductive.
@@TheOldChron Actually, I neglected to mention that Martin Gabel also had many appearances as a panelist on What's My Line, alongside his wife, Arlene Francis
Richard Brooks was one of the heavyweights writing and directing. He dealt with things that mattered.
Jolly good show, cheers Ricardo
I concur.
fantastic picture!

VERY good movie!!
Yes it is - it is what we expect of the press, in my experience local newspapers are a lot more down to earth, caring, honest and help more than the gutter rats lurking in the Streets of Shame, but human nature being drawn towards the dark side its a wonder anywhere in the world is perfect.
GREAT FILM - WE NEED MORE NEWSPAPERS LIKE THIS!!!!
Yes I totally agree, however, newspapers are going through a terminal decline and will soon be as old fashioned as town criers
What is the name of that Evangelist, I want to shake his hand.

When I was a kid, the word went around that because this put Journalism in a bad light, the in print reviews panned this picture, resulting in significant lower box office. I wonder to this day if this was true.

But I do have some questions:
Why do bad people have it so good? (King James Bible: Why do the wicked prosper?)
Why do con artists make it big?
You planted them and they put down roots.
They flourished and produced fruit.
They talk as if they’re old friends with you,
but they couldn’t care less about you.
Meanwhile, you know me inside and out.
You don’t let me get by with a thing!
Make them pay for the way they live,
pay with their lives, like sheep marked for slaughter.
How long do we have to put up with this-
the country depressed, the farms in ruin-
And all because of wickedness, these wicked lives?
Even animals and birds are dying off
Because they’ll have nothing to do with God
and think God has nothing to do with them.

Sadly. newspapers are dying. This film, though fictional, is a great epitaph
Barbed wire to the cowboy and cameras to the artist.
Not forgetting, or course, cobblers to the king!

Wonderful movie. I love Bogart. And this film. But I ask myself, in this day, is there a future for investigative journalists or for "paper" newspapers?
+Miriam Nannetti Never mind social media gossip and out of focus pics will open a brighter future for corrupt councils, courts, police and parliament as their PR handouts will be printed like its gospel - in a word or two....its over
There is no future for anything; the white race has been designated to insure constant change as to eradicate even a semblance of referential perspective; thus: what we know today we know today, and what we learn tomorrow will be good until the day after
I loved the newspaper growing up; shame we don't have honest reporters any more... Truth will set you free..

My sentiments exactly.
The one part of the storyline that I didn't like was how quickly The Day was going to new ownership (two days after the teletype announcement or the very day after the judge's decision. At the very minimum it should have been 1 to 4 weeks which that would be mandatory today.

Great film !
So what happened to journalism in the USA ?
Thanks for that billion dollar question - I will ask another one, even greater: What is Truth?
Back then there were thousands of independent newspapers. Now 5 giant corporations own 95% of the news media.
DEMOCRATS.
Part of Bogie's mystique, as strange as it sounds, is that he died so young.
You are correct, probably the best known is Jesus Christ who lay down his life at around 33 years of age, Bogart was 57 1899-1957 died from terrible cancer, he was a magnetic man.
Agreed, on both counts. John 3:16.
ουτως γαρ ηγαπησεν ο θεος τον κοσμον ωστε τον υιον τον μονογενη εδωκεν ινα πας ο πιστευων εις αυτον μη αποληται αλλ εχη ζωην αιωνιον

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

It better be good, it better not be just a re-make, it better be better - are there any actors today who have charisma, stage presence?
33:20 James Dean!
Everyone has to start somewhere, even James Dean, I wonder where Johnny Depp began his career?
Not sure but dang...what a hilarious Pirate !
I've been a james dean fan for a long time, and that's not james dean as the copy boy.
The negative comments from a wussie with multiple aliases and/or his gang of wuss had no impact on my viewing this movie whatsoever. Except for some minor cropping of the titles that didn't matter, the picture and sound quality were excellent.
I very much enjoyed the movie. Many thanks to The Old Chron for sharing,
He is to be commended, not condemned.
Thanks for your kind views, Roger and Out,!
I'm getting some herky-jerky movement at various points, especially when someone's walking across a room, but it certainly doesn't detract from my enjoyment.
That's showbiz Indy
His next movie after winning his Oscar for The African Queen.
+Gary Williams Better to win public approval than a sideboard of trophies, editors like the one he portrayed really do exist

John Litel makes a good judge
He's not a bad judge of character
wonderful! thank you. It's not good to mess with the press! wink wink
When I was a trainee journalist I sat a law exam, vital to gaining my NCTJ certificate. The exam invigilator left the room after five minutes to ourselves for 30 mins and everyone cheated using their law books. I could not believe my eyes; here was tomorrow's journalists, about 30 of them, all looked like they were cribbing off the law guide book. Those guys who would be fighting corruption and upholding the truth passed the law exam., I was so proud that I failed, so how did I qualify and gain my NCTJ to get a job?
thats how you make a movie
Do you have a favourite scene?
it was a good movie and love the idea of a free press and hoping it makes a difference which it can but

Why thank you miss rosey, imperfections are what make us human, without them we would all be perfectly boring
