A wonderful story about truths emerging. I went through a similar situation when I was 13 years old in 1962 when I told my family I was gay. The same sense of dread engulfed me. However, my grandmother, a very stoic and religious woman who I adored and admired, shocked not only me but our entire family. She said..."And?" That reaction almost knocked me off my feet. "And?" I replied. She said..."Baby, I've known who you were since you were 4 years old." In retrospect, the term 'who you were' was telling. I asked her..."Why didn't you tell me?" She said..."It wasn't up to me to tell you, it was up to you to tell me. Once you did that, I knew you accepted who you are. It's our job to raise you to be the man you're supposed to be, not the man we want you to be." From that time on, I have never denied who I am. As a 75 year old gay man, I am so blessed to have a family who, no matter their children's choices, allows them to grow into their true selves. I've been in a loving relationship for 30 years and it is because of the solid foundation of love, acceptance and understanding laid with my grandmother's remarks in 1962. Daniel came to understand that with his son. Kudos to the story's author. A caveat: It would be interesting addendum if Daniel and Mark reconnected and let their true selves be acknowledged. Wonderful, wonderful story.
