I'm extremely glad you're doing these types of videos. River kings got my family into kayaks. Now you guys have shown me useful information about hammock camping and tarps. This has opened up a whole new world for adventures for us. My son joined cub scouts this year, and we're trying to decide on what kind of gear to set up for a November camp out. It's hard to do in Oklahoma because November could be 70 degree's or 20 degree's.
@@PegasusTheMajestic Right on! Thanks for the kind words! There will be at least two more tarp reviews and possibly some more. I know it can be overwhelming so hopefully this will help!
Tarp, I run the Superfly as well. But, when it gets cold, I break out my Smokehouse mini hammock hot tent with the Seek Outdoors Ti stove. I am in WI, so the cold I speak of is cold cold, not chilly.
Great video alot of good information. One of the reasons I like hammock camping is the air flow. It prevents condensation and provides concealment from thermal
If you need bigger try Simply Light Designs. Jared makes excellent hammocks, tarps and other gear. It’s a custom shop but my Winter Haven tarp from him is perfect for what you described as your needs. The XL Silpoly will have almost 6ft walls per side but you can customize it and ask him to add 2’-3’ more per side so you can go from ridgeline to ground. I have used his tarp for years with no issues. He reinforces all pull outs/tie outs ect. Seam seals it and can add any hardware you want. Beastie D’s line locs ect. You can choose a more durable material too. Great video.
Brandon says his tarps are cut and sewn to go under the ridgeline. Snow slides right off. I have used mine in snow many times, no issues. My Mini-Fly also is a great tarp. If you use the spreader poles,{made by Warbonnet for that tarp} you get alot more headroom. Windy nights I pitch it low, and have tons of room for the hammock. Warbonnet rocks!
Good deal KG! Thanks for the info! I still prefer over. We often actually get less snow and more ice down here. Ice does not slide off. I have never used the spreader bars myself. I too have the mini!
I'm driven by some of the same considerations you listed for yourself in this video. In fact your earlier video featuring the Kelty Noah 16 helped me as I sought to upgrade my initial tarp/hammock setup. I first started with the Kelty Noah 12 as my camping tarp. It is tough and does not leak. But I was not quite comfortable with its converage over my 11 ft. hammock; even when I set it up in the diamond configuration. One sleet-fill rain with 20 mph wind gust let me know I probably needed a tarp with more coverage. I enventually settled on the DD 4 x 4 tarp. It offers 13 ft. of coverage on all sides and can be deployed in an A-frame configuration that carries its sidewalls to the ground while still allowing six ft. of head room inside. When deployed this way, its ends can be closed off door-style to further insulate the interior. It kept me comfortable and bone dry in 4 days of rainy, cold camping this past April.
Hey I agree with you I have one in camo the walls could be longer the coyotes can come in and bump your bottom the way it is was woken up once that way great video keep safe
So, you are saying that a more ideal tarp should 13'X16'? That would be nice! I have the 11' Warbonnet SF. I discovered they had 13' after I got it. Can't catch a break. Thanks for posting Mr. Pete!
I have that same tarp in 11'. I have the pole mod for the pullouts. I keep the height down and side walls steeper to get the closer to the ground. I had them as close as 6" away. I use shock cord for the doors and they overlap which helps incredibly for high wind and rain. I throw a video together and show ya my setup. I have some dutchware gear for tarp connections.
I have had the Warbonnet Superfly for about 2 years. I absolutely love it. The doors have been a game changer. I’m thinking of switching to a dyneema tarp. But, they are super pricey. You have a great channel. I subscribed. ✌️

Good review, Pete. I've been using a DD 10x10 square tarp for a few years. For three season camping I like the ability to raise one end with poles to make a "porch". Three of us huddled under that setup last week in Colorado to get out of some afternoon rain showers. It's great waking up to the beautiful views in the mountains! In cold or windy weather I can quickly drop the poles and enclose it in a similar A frame (and even bring the corners in to enclose it further.) Of course, the 10x10 starts to get pretty tight when closed in, but it's pretty good for one person and gear. I'm leaning toward going with a lighter weight sylnylon option next year, so I'm looking forward to more of your reviews.
Thanks Michael! My go to warm weather tarp is about 10 x 8. Once you go in a tarp to ground config and close the doors off on a cold night, it's hard to go back!
I have a very similar setup. I hang my SF lower in cold weather to close that gap. It makes entry and exit slightly more challenging, but cutting the " blow thru" at night is a huge plus. Great video! I agree with all of your thoughts regarding what's truly important.... New subscriber now!
