For now it seems Treliving has little appetite for extending MM, and would prefer to trade him, and failing that may well be prepared to let him walk as a UFA. So the message about how highly he thinks of Marner as a player, is all about letting everyone know that moving on from Marner is not about the quality of the player, or scapegoating the player, but all about needing to reallocate the Cap dollars to remake the core, by acquiring a bonafide top pair D.
Marner is a 99 point player, not 100. Just like you wouldn’t call Matthews a 70 goal scorer. Marner is a star in the REGULAR SEASON only. In the playoffs, he’s a soft and weak overpaid player. 2 assists in 7 games!
