One of my favorite things about Matriphagy is that every song stands on its own and can be taken differently by anyone who listens, while also telling the story if you choose to listen to it that way. Also applies to every Hungry Lights album.

The song that meant alot to me lyrically is The Silo. Although literally it's about Kungan cutting off his wang, it reminds me of how back in middle school, I got picked on for having long hair. It got to the point where I decided to get my hair cut short. The day I walked in with short hair everyone was like "No! Why?". And the people who picked on me were saying "You didn't have to do that."

God this band is incredible and Justin is a goddamn genius. It's so cool that the albums are abstract and have secret meanings... When Justin asked "what is Justin trying to tell me about myself" (referring to the first song) I thought maybe like when we get old and death's coming (the police) and you're holding on to the projects/stuff you wanted to do in your life... And it's so cool that other people will look at that in a different way. ❤️

Commenting before watching the whole video, but in regards to the opening discussion on interpreting TGOD as though there's no overarching story, I tend to approach concept albums sort of like the "concept" is bonus. The songs are still regular songs and can be interpreted like anything else on my playlist, there's just a special reward for listening to them as part of the album, too.

One of the most admirable qualities about J is that he clearly strives to improve in everything he does, and you can tell he doesn't want the constant comparisons between this album and the previous one. I remember how much shit like that got to him back in the Amnaeon days; I'm glad he's got this opportunity to flesh out all these things he has to say about the world and life in his music, with some the best fucking musicians of the century, at that. So glad to be listening. Keep it up boys and girl.

I relate more to Dicker than Kungan, so I like TGOD more. But also I like what I envision when listening to TGOD, I feel like my frustrations are seen and I’m not crazy. Shaken (not Stirred) for example makes me think of my fight with religion, how everyone is telling me what to believe in and that I have no choice, I feel dickers desperation and frustration to be something more. Thank you Justin, thank you Tallah! LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

I was actually at the gym today thinking to myself “I wonder if we’ll get a concept video for TGOD like we got with Matriphagy.” Then I found this video 😁
I’m lowkey bummed that it wasn’t like a series with the last record. But the fact that we have to piece together the overall plot ourselves after listening to the tracklisting, I think that’s pretty rad and I’m definitely more than satisfied with this concept video.
This makes me so psyched for this record!

  • @ghostwithknife416

Ok Tallah, you want my interpretation? I can give a longer post for it -
Track list: How Long, Impressionist, For the Recognition, Shaken, The Hard Reset, Dicker's Done, Stomping Grounds, Telescope, Wendrid, Headfirst, Thistle, mud_castle, Of Nothing
My interpretation requires less characters and gives off a completely different impression of Dicker. In my eyes, this story is of an obviously narcissistic mad scientist with some "plan." Tallah LOVES an unreliable narrator, and Dicker fits this perfect. This track list gives us the story of a narcissistic genius who faces constant set backs in his "grand plan."
How Long is a great way to get into the mindset of Dicker, as well as a great place to understand why Dicker is going rogue. He keeps asking how long until he sets us free? Until people can be themselves. This gives us the driving philosophy of Dicker: people refuse to be their "true self" and its his job to bring that out. He wants to "evolve" people into their true selves. As we begin, his work is obliterated, probably being discovered by whatever company he works for. And as we discover later, it was probably something already dark based off his later experiments. (In the Impressionist, he talks about not needing the guise of safety, so Dicker OBVIOUSLY doesn't give a damn about rules) They promptly destroyed his work, and fueled what would become his campaign of revenge.
Impressionist & Recognition help paint a picture of the kind of narcissist Dicker is. He only wants to be recognized, for in his eyes he's the only person who can help people "be themselves." He wants to play god and craft a new humanity....but things go awry.
In Shaken, Dicker is face to face with another failure. He was caught, and as his plan starts, an early experiment fails. It shows us Dicker beginning to slip into insanity, shattered that he couldn't get the job done. Shaken is where Dicker's fragile ego is on full display, showing us how poorly he takes failure. Getting caught was bad enough, now this? He'd rather throw it away then acknowledge his failure is a possibility.
Hard Reset is Dicker trying to start again. He's over his failure and is determined to finish his work flawlessly. But, now there's a more aggressive edge to him. As much as he doesn't want to admit it, failing has damaged his sanity drastically, and he's become more violent with his experiments. Dicker's Done has us see the mindset of "evolving" people slipping as Dicker starts to take out his unacknowledged rage on his subjects. Stomping Grounds is a bit of him trying to get back on track with evolution, but still lashing out.
Telescope is supposed to be the media acknowledging his work in a way Dicker despises, but this doesn't really click for me since he obviously wants attention. So here, it's Dicker's rampage as his experiments are discovered. He sees this attention as progress, and for a while things are going to plan. But, a new character enters the fray...
Wendrid, Dicker's former lab assistant has it figured out. He tracks Dicker down, and Dicker tries to convince him to help the cause. When Wendrid declines, Dicker snaps. It's a rollercoaster of mixed emotions. Dicker thought for sure someone who worked alongside him would understand his vision. When he can't convince Wendrid to join him, Dicker sees it as another failure. And failure drives Dicker further into his madness.
Headfirst is where in my eyes Dicker makes Wendrid pay for not following him. This is a vicious song, and it brings up betrayal quite a few times. Dicker's rage is exacerbated, like he's taking this incredibly personally throughout Headfirst. With Wendrid gone, Dicker's madness consumes him further. He CANNOT fail, he is godlike with his genius. With wrath in his heart, he decides his next experiment will also be personal. The man who cost him his old lab, the pig man.
Dicker does indeed catch the pig man and decides to give him an ironic taste of vengeance. He drags him to his old lab and starts to experiment and torture the man he madly believes caused all these failures. However, Dicker is arrogant as he antagonizes the pig man....and things fall apart. He is fought off by the pig man. He fails again. This final failure breaks him.
Dicker's limping away further into his decimated lab. The pig man could be chasing him, or the police. As he flees, Dicker's madness takes over. He talks about his plan like a castle built in mud, now fully lost in his failure. Except.... there's one final twist...
We never actually explained WHAT his original experiment was. A few times, Dicker has talked about a Muse. Something that inspires him to keep going. Something he probably lost. His original experiment. What on earth could Dicker have created that made him so arrogant to believe in his cause? As Dicker tries to find a hideaway in his old lab, he finds it. Somehow, locked away in the lab, something survived the destruction. As his pursuers draw nearer, the arrogance returns. A mad rambling Dicker begins to unleash what was not destroyed. The thing that made him believe he could play god and force evolution. His magnum opus, a lifeform so perfect it survived the total destruction of his lab. A creature that would feast upon the humans that refused to accept him as their Savior. As his pursuers watch his creation make itself known, Dicker psychotically mocks them. There is no salvation for humanity. It's too late to answer with a decree. Melted in the mouth of the Insect Queen.

I am absolutely ecstatic for this album. Everything from simply enjoying the music, understanding the story, and finding out for myself what the order is will be so much fun. Like Justin said, I've tried to think about the lyrics in a way that's outside the concept and it has already helped me out in life. Shaken (not stirred) was released the day I went through a breakup and it was almost eerie how accurate the lyrics felt like it was describing my situation. (without the whole vivisection concept of course). That. on top of the beautiful brutality of the music, relieved so much negative emotions for me and gave me hope for the future. I will be a die hard Tallah fan till the day I die. In conclusion, you will be missed Piper.

Really appreciate the constant disclaimers about lore and interpretations. As someome who got into Tallah blind and always felt there was something connecting them all, i never wouldve peiced together an actual story on par with this. I listened to the entirety of TGOD after reading the spotify bio saying it was about a pissed of scientist and that was about as much as I knew. I didnt catch the large majority of the story in Matriphagy. My point is thus: I was already pretty attatched to my own interpretations of the songs i liked and after a few google searches of words i thought alluded to something specific only to be drawn into Tallah lore threads, i was actually disappointed at the prospect of an album/song that cant be interpreted how i wanted it to. But, in the infinite wisdom of Tallah, of course here you admit how nothing is supposed to be taken at face value. Im glad to hear you have inspiration for writing your music not only to tell a story but to touch your audience, because that is where a listener like me came from.

You and The Gloom in The Corner are some of my favourite bands rn, both storytelling, nu-core kinda bands where every song is unique yet sticking to your awesome sounds. TGITC is my AOTY but I reckon Tallah's album will come close.

Also if y'all want a band that tells one big story across their entire discography, and is a nu-core/metalcore/symphonic/movie score type band, The Gloom in The Corner is the band for you.

Finally got around to watching this one, took me way too long to. I love how twisted and wild Justin's mind is, he always has incredible stories to tell. The album is amazing, by the way, and the concept, is one of my favorites ever. Even among Justin's stuff, I'd put TGOD's story second only to the Hungry Lights pentalogy.
I love the overall idea, I love the creative, unique depravity and brutality of it, I love Dicker's strange, delusional outlook on what he's doing and how that shapes his actions, I love the concept of Dicker and Chromofix in general, and I love the flourishes of detail that put a neat little bow on everything. Some of those flourishes I"m referring to would be the different handling of each victim, you know, one gets drowned in a lake, one gets shot execution style in the woods, one splatters into an unrecognizable paint smear, and of course, Morton burns alive. Very fitting on that last one, a particularly dark and cruel end for the victim Dicker likely hated the most. Another detail I thought was cool was the concept of the insect queen, and the way she would just happily melt up and eat the "scraps".

Personally, I think it’d be great if they performed across Canada in one of each of the big cities in the southern provinces from East to West. St. John’s, Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg (my province), Saskatoon, Calgary, and Vancouver.

I'm slowly learning to love unresolved cliffhangers.
This is starting to remind me of the Twilight Zone episode "The Masks", where a dying man, on Mardi Gra, is visited by his family and he makes them wear masks that represent what they are on the inside. At the end of the episode, their faces take the shape of the masks. There's also a hint of the movie "Tusk" as well. Hopefully, y'all will be able to make a connection to this concept.

My current guess for chronological order (haven't analyzed in detail, I'm just putting together what I know from listening to the album and watching this video, so this may not end up too accurate, but I'm actually pretty confident):
    1. How Long?
    2. Telescope
    3. For the Recognition
    4. Shaken (Not Stirred)
    5. The Hard Reset
    6. Stomping Grounds
    7. The Impressionist
    8. Of Nothing
    9. Dicker's Done
    10. Wendrid
    11. Headfirst
    12. Thistle
    13. mud_castle

Me, immediately after: "Dicker is Kungan's father and Lobifu is one of his monsters."
