A nice detail is that they kept Frank’s and Larry’s eye color consistent. Larry has blue, Frank has hazel. They made sure Frank kept his hazel eyes after taking Larry’s skin.
Fun fact: After the studio requested them to change the title, "The Hellbound Heart", a 60 year old female crew member suggested they name the movie - "What a woman will do for a good fuck"
Reminds me of the demons' coming out of the ground in Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight after Billy Zane's green blood gets splattered on the ground, or Freddy's resurrection in Nightmare 4.
Fun fact: originally Barker wanted the movie's title to be the same as the book, but the studio didn't like it because they thought it sounded too much like a romance. After struggling to come up with a new one, he eventually opened up to suggestions from the crew, and one 60-year-old woman suggested "What a Woman Will Do For a Good Fuck"
When Clive Barker first showed his mom this movie, she wept with joy when she saw his name in the opening credits. He then leaned over to her and told her that that was the happiest she was going to be for the next two hours.
I was staying over at a friend's place one time. She and her partner were massive horror fans. They forgot to tell me that on the back of the spare bedroom door was a life-size Pinhead cutout ... Let's just say it took me a few moments to regain my composure after I shut the bedroom door for the first time ...
And the music! That incredible MUSIC! The harsh contrast of the gruesome stuff and the music is one of the main reasons for my fascination for one and two. The rest is forgettable, although I really like "Inferno".
@@coolcatcami We did this during an art class I had in college while studying anatomy. My reaction was pretty similar to Clive Barker's; I thought it looked like roast beef that had been cooked, nothing like it was hyped up to be
To this day, the image of Pinhead’s blank expression uttering “We will tear your soul apart” gives me goosebumps. You always see the joy when “villains” torment their victims and everything, but it’s just the blank expression and commanding voice that stays with me. I agree with the man in the interview, if anyone else delivered that line it wouldn’t have been nearly as iconic.
@@miketrapper0464 exactly. If anyone other than his actor delivered that line, I don’t think it would have been as memorable. He was so perfect for the role he was brought back for both the new game as well as the Mortal Kombat Legacy series
According to the Hellraiser wiki, the female cenobite was originally going to be called Deep Throat due to her gash in her throat which makes her voice very raspy and deep. But they quickly dropped it to just female cenobite due the obvious sexual nature of the name. I also read Clive Barker actually hated the name Pinhead originally since it was a name started by the fans as well, and it didn't make Pinhead sound menacing. He kept calling Pinhead Hell's High Priest but I think he eventually grew to like it since well the name just sticked by fans.
If you ever read The Scarlet Gospel written by Clive, he writes that Pin Head hates the name people have given him. If he hears you say it he will torture you extra good.
When I was 9, my mother took me to Texas Frightmare Weekend back in 2011. She made Lament Configuration box for me and even made a badass cenobite costume for me which I absolutely loved, I still have it to this day. The first person I met was Ashley Laurence (Kirsty) and she loved my costume and LOVED me. (She asked my mother if she can have me lol) she even signed the lament configuration box my mother made as well, and she even introduced me to Doug Bradley (Pinhead). At that point, I was just full of happiness and excitement and Doug even signed the box as well and I forgot to mention just how nice, and pleasant both Doug and Ashley are, like they let me take my time asking questions (I was shy), they answered with details and it was definitely a treat. Here’s where the story gets interesting. Doug asked if he could introduce me to CLIVE FUCKING BARKER HIMSELF. Now here’s the thing about Clive, his line of people was longer than any Line at Disneyworld ever. It literally started on the third story of the hotel the convention was at (meaning not everyone was gonna meet him that day). So when I told Doug I would like to meet Clive (cuz I’m not stupid) he held my hand and took me all the way to the front of the line, where CLIVE FUCKING BARKER was. The man was signing a poster around the time when Doug said “hey Clive, you gotta see this kid”. Like who needs a fast pass when you have Fucking Pinhead? I talk to Clive, he love my costume, he signed the box as well, and he even decided to have a PRIVATE PHOTOSHOOT with me. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I’ll never forget it. After that, I met a bunch of other great folks like Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), Angus Scrimm (Tall Man), etc. 2011 was the best year of my life so far and Clive Barker will always be my Hero.
This is the cutiest story ever. I low-key wanna see a pic of that day. I love when celebrities go out their way to be nice to kids. It's a decade later and you remember that one day.
Well it's funny that many people assume that the name "Hellraiser" refers to Pinhead, when quite obviously Frank is the hellraiser. Another funny thing is that Polish VHS bootleg translation for the title was "The Rubik's Cube".
I think it was when Lazarus was sick and Mary and Martha were asking Jesus to come see him, but he was in another town that week and by the time he got there Lazarus had died. Thus Jesus wept Then he calls Lazarus’s name and tells him to walk out and he review him and Lazarus walks out fine
13:10 the female cenobite was my old drama teacher, she’s such a lovely person. It’s soo cool to think that she was in this classic horror movie. Though if anyone in my school ever mentioned hellraiser to her she would get super pissed
Mate I’m sorry she was a dickhead, I had her for 5 years, the first 3 she loved me because I liked drama, but as soon as I started to loose interest she treated me like shit, she actually got suspended a few years ago because she was so mean to her pupils
@@litcigarettes well you could say the same about any comment, I wouldn’t have any reason to lie, the school she worked at was called William Howard, she was lovely to people she liked, notorious for having favourites, and she was good at teaching, but not a good teacher. She definitely had passion for the subject, just hated anything that went against her view of drama, kinda ironic as it’s meant to be subjective. Also fun fact, the reason she got the role in hellraiser was because her cousin is Clive Barker.
I absolutely love the line of Frank's talking to Kirsty after she first sees him and he says "Come to daddy" in a questioning tone, so did he just say to to absolutely everyone he met? So much he thought she would recognize him just from that phrase
It's the same line Frank uses on Julia in the flashback affair scene if I remember correctly. It's the fact when he says it, he's only muscle man body so I've always thought he said it so much that she would recognize him with the phrase alone lol.

@Asimpnamednutsack Part 6 pretty much copied off part 5 and it is annoyingly obvious from the start. As far as I'm concerned, parts 5, 7 and 10 are the only decent DTV Hellraisers. 6, 8 and 9, I would be happy to never watch again. Far from a perfect series, but I enjoy it for what it is.
True story: When I was a kid, maybe 6-7 years old. My dad would tape movies from HBO on VHS and label them himself. He would put mutilple movies on one VHS tape, and put them in alphabetical order, poorly I may add. Anyways, my mom worked midnights, so she'd be home with me during the day. I wanted to watch Home Alone, so we did. She fell asleep half way through and my eyes were glued to the set. So after Home Alone was over, Hellraiser came on. I was a little kid, and very curious, so I didn't wake my mom. She ended up waking up right near the end, when he says "Jesus wept" and tried to turn off the TV, but couldn't find the remote. The damage was done anyway, and a (very young) horror fan was born.
@@derrickscott1630 my dad didn't care. They both started with H so they went on the same tape lol. My mom was pretty pissed about it but what can ya do.
Fun fact, Julia was originally supposed to become the "queen of hell" at the end of the second movie and take on the lead as the main villain of the series after that. As much as I love Pinhead, I'm a little disappointed we never got to see Julia's intended storyline come to fruition.
Julia was very compelling in the second movie. And is interesting to think about how those who really take up the cenobite way of thinking help “gather” more “recruits” into their “religion.”
You would like the graphic novel Kristi becomes the Hell Priestess as well as detective Harry Damour and both gets the pins put in them while Pinhead goes back to beign Elliot Spencer and then eventually he goes to a separate level of Hell and leads an army of demons and fallen angels against Earth, interesting to see the Cenobites acting kind of like good guys defending earth and hell against him
Man I just gotta say how much I appreciate James and the rest of the crew for what they do. This channel has definitely helped get some of my friends and family into the horror genre
I was a scaredy-cat but I started getting into horror after "mustering up the courage" to watch IT back in 2017. I found this youtube channel like a week or so later and loved these vids. I don't think it's a stretch to say that in the 2010s, James and Dead Meat have done as much to promote horror as the Duffer Bros and Mike Flanagan have done with their Netflix shows
He’s also super sweet! I met him at a convention a few months back and you could tell that he genuinely loves his fans because he spent like 10 minutes each with everyone who met him!
Oh man, is Hellraiser the series James is wrapping the year up with? Oh boy he might go insane once we get to the straight to video era of this series!!
I've been waiting patiently for this one. I do hope it generates enough interest for James to cover the 6 direct to video ones - I just wanna see him go dumpster diving into that garbage.
Ong I requested this a few months ago because James be explaining what’s goin on in the movie I watched it and hoped he did a kill count but he didn’t until yesterday 😂
Barker's inexperience with directing this film at the time as well as seeing just how low the series has gone in the years since then is likely why he fought as hard as he has recently to get the rights back to the franchise in order to do a more faithful adaptation of The Hellbound Heart.
Really glad he got the rights back the first and maybe even the second Hellraiser movie are probably my favorite horror movies of all time. The comics are also beyond amazing and give much more insight on how Leviathan, Hell and the Cenobites work and behave
And I think it’s hilarious how people complain about pinhead being a female in the new movie while in the book he is described as somebody with an androgyn Body and a Male Voice
@@gggallin8279 I had to re-read The Hellbound Heart again after the announcement came out that Pinhead is being played by a woman for the remake because I totally forgot that indeed the character is described as androgynous.
I’m always surprised with how often child actors are used in movies like this. Even knowing it was fake I’d be traumatized for life if I saw any of this in person as a kid.
I imagine the horror is significantly lessened when there's no more framing or scary music and the like. When you're working in a job environment and these nightmare creatures are just normal people in wacky makeup, it's about as scary as a Halloween costume party.
Most people that work in the horror genre are really nice in real life, and generally have a soft spot for kids. There is a hilarious photo of Doug dressed as the hell priest on set holding a young kid and the kid is giggling his but off. The true knot actors felt bad "torturing" the kid in dr sleep. There's behind the scene video of the adult actors being like all shook up right after doing it checking on the kid and he's all like "did I give a good preformance", laughing with his dad off camera.
“Explorers, in the outer regions of experience. Demons to some, angels to others.” And THAT quote sums up the Cenobites perfectly. And that’s what the films forgot starting with part 3 forward.
That's right. Pinhead isn't after killing or destruction like most villains, but is obsessed with a philosophy that pain and pleasure are inseparable. The scary part is that he doesn't entirely understand consent.
I love Pinhead's character arc. He went from being an otherworldly, impartial entity, to being a judge of sorts, to end up associated with NFTs in 2021.
frank's second death is what inspired pinhead's mori in dead by daylight. that is really cool! i've never seen the movies but they seem great and well made for the time. amazing video as usual, keep up the great work!
@@introman1854 nah that one looks kinda lame, Pinhead just hooks survivors with his chains then stretch their faces and he’s all like “I have such sights to show you” Pyramid head has the cool fences but then just stabs in a tame way with his knife, doesn’t look brutal
I appreciate how often your asides give more insight into how interconnected the world of horror is. Things like how Candyman and Hellraiser are based on work from Clive Barker, tying this movie to Sinister, it shows so much progress since you started!
Hellraiser is my absolute favorite horror franchise, sure the third one is awful and the direct to video releases are even worse but the visuals of the first four are outstanding and Pinhead has some of the most quotable lines out of any horror icon. Body horror has always been my thing and Hellraiser absolutely hits that spot for me, from Franks return to life to a mentally insane person being given a razor to a princess having her scalp being held open with hooks. I just love it.
I always liked the idea of the Cenobytes as inter-dimensional beings that have explored such depths of hedonism in the universe that pleasure and pain have become one for them. It is much more interesting than the biblical demons from hell trope. I never liked the boney dragon thing at the end, it is one of my least favorite parts of the movie because it completely contradicts everything Pinhead has been saying about him and his.... gash ::shudder::
Yeah - that's the one thing I'm not crazy about in Barker's vision of them, he did go kinda all out on the "they're demons from the good ol' Christian Hells" in his later projects (comics and The Scarlet Gospels). I much prefer what the first couple of movies infer, which is that they're ... almost like, fairies, in a weird way? As in, the weird, threatening, Fair Folk kind that loves making deals and are generally unknowable and low-key terrifying. But not evil per se.
If you are familiar with The Elder Scrolls series, I always related to them as Daedric Princes. In TES, the Daedra are a series of gods, no sex, no morality. They are all called Princes regardless of any effeminate form they may take and they make deals with mortals in order to entertain themselves, but they are neither malevolent nor benevolent. They have no concept of good or bad they just preside over their own realms of (for example) night, thievery, debauchery, pestilence, disease, torture, wild beasts, the dead, the undead, prosperity, good fortune, mischief, etc. All different realms of influence.
I just love the concept of having no morality. They simply exist and because of their eternal nature, are just trying to entertain themselves by interfering with; but not purposefully directing in one way or another, the lives of mankind. Even the God of pain and torture doesn't have an evil agenda, he simply exists to inflict pain and torture. For some that is "demonic" for others... not so much.
I completely agree with the interdimensional beings thing. I thought the boney dragon was super goofy as hell but how did it contradict what Pinhead said? I haven't seen the movie in years.
Grace Kirby who played the female Cenobite was also my drama teacher. Finding out she hated the makeup process and how it made her look made a lot of sense, she wasn’t a good teacher and a really mean person. She hated whenever people brought up Hellraiser, despite Clive Barker being her cousin.
The sound The Doctor makes in the second film with the drill going into his head, is by far one of the most horrifying sounds. The echo of the drill coming from his gurgling screams is just Amazing!!
Clive Barker really made a lot of captivating, creative and mesmerizing stories. Especially when you also look into the deeper differences from book to screen adaptations
"This will be a day long remembered" Also the reason why the puzzle is so easily done is because it is solved by those with, knowing or not, have a desire the Cenobites can fulfill. The Jesus wept line is so delightful "Jesus wept" but I won't '
This movie has always held a special place in my heart. My father introduced me to Hellraiser as a teenager, around 13, and we watched it together with joy. The practical effects stunned me and the story compelled me (even though the general story was pretty clear). I will never forget the horror nerd that this movie transformed me into to this very day. Honestly James, I would definitely cover the later Hellraiser sequels at some point in 2022, maybe Summer. The thing is, although some of them aren't great, there is fun to be had in some of those later sequels. Plus it's not like direct-to-dvd movies necessarily mean bad releases, there are plenty of more obscure movies on the KC that have gotten to the 1 million mark or above. At the end of the day it's your channel, but the Hellraiser sequels aren't talked about often in media, so I would really want to see those Kill Counts.
After the first 4, the only one I think is worth watching, and thus, also worth reviewing, is Hellraiser 5. Well, Hellworld is... interesting? It might also make for a decent review.
I'd like to see them too. I mean, some of those films could have maybe been semi-decent horror films if they hadn't shoehorned Pinhead into them. And the one with The Auditor is interestinf

According to Paul Kane's The Hellraiser Films and their Legacy, she was known during filming as C**t Throat.
I've heard some ppl refer to her as dimples, but that's more of a fan name

Depends on the version. In most modern versions, the shortest verse is Job 3:2 "He said"
Well some versions of Job 3:2 are just “he said:” but that’s only more recent versions
I think it was when Lazarus was sick and Mary and Martha were asking Jesus to come see him, but he was in another town that week and by the time he got there Lazarus had died. Thus Jesus wept

Demons to some, angels to others.”
And THAT quote sums up the Cenobites perfectly. And that’s what the films forgot starting with part 3 forward.

Notice how much worse the series got, the more it indeed leaned into that black-and-white, good-and-evil trope of just making them demons from Hell.

@@underthepale Hellseeker is worth a mention just for the fact of bringing back Ashly Laurence as Kirsty again. Other than that those direct to DVD sequels are all over the place in regards to quality. Revelations was the worst IMO.
Don’t they get worse after each one
The only worthwhile sequels are 2-3. Bloodline is only fair in the beginning half, with some decent gore effects. But set in the future in space?!?!?! Ugh, really!?
The other sequels suck....
funny how i rediscover this movie while i’m diving down the industrial music rabbithole, if anyone here hasn’t heard Coil’s proposed soundtrack to this movie i highly recommend to give it a shot; Chris Young’s soundtrack is great in itself but there’s something about Coil’s that just feels fucking harrowing in comparison
edit: theres also a really good minidoc from one of the members of Coil that talks about what happened & even has footage of what the soundtrack would look like over the movie that’s also worth checking out (Hellraiser: Soundtrack Hell)
where do i find Coils soundtrack?
@@godzillasenpai3685 a condensed version of the original tracklisting was released on vinyl (and later, streaming services) under the name The Unreleased Themes For Hellraiser, however the full version was released on CD in 2015 (and can be found in UA-cam) under the name “The Consequences Of Raising Hell”. (both releases also include an assortment of songs Coil made for product ads over the years known as Music For Commercials [tracks 4 to 14 of TUTfH, tracks 10 to 20 of TCoRH])
Mortifying? Doesn't that mean embarrassing?
@@fuzzycatbutts whoops
@@aciddrive No biggie 🙂 Edit: "fucking harrowing" is a lot more visceral anyway! 😄
“Jesus lept”
James that might have been the most brilliant pun I’ve ever heard in my life.
Can you explain what it means, I am too dumb as it seems.
18:58 This is the funniest joke I've ever heard from Dead Meat.
Finally. only took him like 5 years to get to one of the most iconic series.
I know right
Agreed, he re counted Friday the 13th before doing hellraiser smh
4 actually
Better that way. He would have to make a recount if he did it when he just started.
My weekend is made 😎🤘🏻
Same
Monke
Ok
best thing about fridays
YESSSSSSS
When I was 8 every time I walked passed the horror section and saw Pinhead, I wouldn't dare rent the movie, even though I was into horror flicks. So fast forward 27 years to 2020 when I subscribed to Shudder and decided to watch it and boy was I wrong about Pinhead. He wasn't even the villain or killed anyone. The movie was amazing, I loved the story.
Neutral horror icons are rare
@@miketrapper0464 I can't believe it took me that long to watch it and it was absolutely amazing and the sequel.
@@GateKeeper36 maybe I’ll see these two movies soon
@@GateKeeper36 apparently I have seen the first one as a kid
@@miketrapper0464 Brave, but I realized I too would have been able to watch it as a kid but if I watched the first two human centipede movies, they were disgusting and morbid.
Watching James talk to a Cenobite with those earbuds was absolutely perfect.
I legit GASPED OUT LOUD when I saw this notification! Also, I heartily approve of James only covering the first four films. Even most diehard Hellraiser fans I know like to pretend everything afterward doesn’t exist.
Wait, you mean there are more past 4?????!!?? Never knew that.
@@jarrarwinks8470 I think there's 8. 😭
@@jarrarwinks8470 Listen to me VERY closely: they. are. NOT. very. good. films. AT. ALL.
(Well, maaaaaybe VI: Hellseeker is okay, sorta, but only because Kirstie comes back for that one and outplays the Hell Priest once again. It’s the only thing that nudges that dumb movie toward “Eh, coulda been worse, I guess.”)
@@scottlovesmoviestoomuch What do you mean, I could only find four of them after trying to do research to see how many there were.
@@jarrarwinks8470 Oh, crap. You’re right. Sorry. All these sights the cenobites have been showing me, I think out of painful euphoria I hallucinated some extra installments to this franchise that aren’t really there. My bad.
Finally Hellraiser, I waited for this kill count for so long!
The kill count isn't always about counting the kills and that's what I love about it James always finds a way to make every episode more enjoyable than the last and I learned new things about horror that I never knew thanks for the good laughs and content James and also Chelsea keep up the great work been watching since the first Friday kill counts 🖤
They used to be just counting the kills but the newer format in the past couple years has vastly improved the content on this channel. The more in depth format is why he did the recount of the Friday movies
19:04 That "Jesus leapt" joke was amazing.
the moment we yall be waiting for, thanks for finally covering this series.
Hellraiser is SICK af! One of my all time favorites!!
“Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell”
Hell yeah. Makes sense that you’re only counting the theatrical ones.
The "Female Cenobite" DID have a name - It was "Sister Nikoletta". Much like how Pinhead wasn't named in the first film - Sister Nikoletta was also not named. Her name wasn't given until her backstory was given in "Clive Barker's Hellraiser #2" comic from January 1st, 1990.
I just need a minute to admire this screenshot. Here's a day I thought would never come. Everyone's in for a batshit ride. I'm not sure any other horror franchise experiences such a drastic decrease in quality with every movie. It's simply stunning.
I honestly don’t care what kill counts James does I love all kill counts and looking forward to all future kill counts and yes James even ThanksKilling 3
especially thankskilling 3
ESPECIALLY ThanksKilling 3
Pinhead: We'll tear your soul apart.

Frank’s very slight “oh shit, should not have done that” face is amazing, it shows you that he didn’t think about what he said there
The wait has been so long and finally it is upon us, although he is only doing the theatrical ones i would love to see him covering the stinkers released later on straight to video
OK, "Jesus leapt" made me burst out laughing...thank you, James. Another great episode as always!
Jesus wept
The moving man eyeing Julia was almost played by Doug Bradley. Also, the guy who ended up playing that moving man later played Peloquin in Nightbreed.
Yes, he mentions that in his book! ("Behind the Mask of the Horror Actor", BTW. Great read.) He says Clive Barker gave him a choice between a moving man carrying a mattress, or "some weird guy with pins in his head" and he almost went for the moving man because he figured it would be better for his career if his face was seen in his first movie rather than being buried beneath layers of latex, even if it was for such a small role. But growing up a fan of classic horror, he simply couldn't resist the idea of playing a movie monster all of his own.
I actually really like the fact that Frank's lines are all over-dubbed. Makes the three different actors work as a single character really well.
