Matt at Matt's off-road recovery ended up having to put louvers in his hood to help keep his engine cooler after putting a built I-6 in his XJ.🤷 But the wild thing is. I have a 2004 built to pretty much the same specs as yours. (I love people's reaction when I let them drive it! And they freaking TRIP! when they hit the gas! Speaking of keeping a 4.0 cool. My wj. I put a ranger clutch fan in it, took the electric out, 160 thermostat but drilled a hole it it. It never goes above 170 now. I should maybe make a short about it.
From what I understand, it’s not good to run “cool” all the time The higher heat apparently helps burn off some impurities or whatever during operation of the system
I have an old '93 that I'm doing up and restoring a bit. Family Jeep, grandparents owned it, and I pretty much grew up in the back of that thing. I put the Eldebrock (port matched) head on it, installed some roller rockers, and plan on saving up for Newcomer to work his magic on it. HOWEVER... this 5.0 build is intriguing... I'd be interested to see how it holds up.
@thunderzap2 How'd I justify it? Barely. I went to have my original head machined, and ported, but they found a bad crack. Mainly, I have big plans for this jeep. It has tons of sentimental value. I installed roller rockers, got rid of the mechanical fan and installed an E-fan setup, and installed a Gibson exhaust all at once, so I can't say how much the head alone affected things. All that being done, you can definitely "feel it in the seat" a bit more, but it doesn't blow your socks off. If I didn't have big plans, I wouldn't have bought that head for any old 4.0 as a straight replacement.
I know its a bit late to say but after learning something new from the AMXJ channel i quickly learned and understood (cause ive had problems with this) that cylinders 5&6 have very poor flow so to help with that, a bung on the freeze plug thats on the head and the last one on the block receiving coolant from the lower coolant hose/out the pump I'll definitely try that on my personal engine build i have coming up, So far my Daily driven LJ has a 10 Percent OD waterpump pulley and she's pretty happy even in the Texas heat too :D
You read em all? Well when you read this one know that we love your channel up here in MA! Wish you were closer because I’d love to work for you! You’re a great showman and an excellent mechanic!
It’d be super cool to see a dyno comparison of your turbo 4.0 vs your 5.0 vs a stock 4.0! I’d love to see a comparison of dollars per horsepower to see which one gained the most for the least money! Great video and great channel!
K Suspension three electric fan system, with the good fans and a ONE core factory HD radiator. I went with a Summit Racing cheap fan controller(s), 2ea , with better relays. The third fan is connected to the factory harness with a on/off switch with a timer relay. Stop T stat because the jeep doesn't run good with a low stat temp (rich).
Sweet build, she sounds mean. Look at the Azzy’s xj transfer case linkage kit. I got one and it worked well for me. This way you don’t have to deal with the rusty linkage.
Put a 90s Honda map sensor on the wj and tune on hptuners the stock Jeep maps don’t read good boost values after 7psi a stock any 90s Honda map is good to 15psi i fought the Jeep map for months before switching worth it
hey dex. could you make a video of the easiest way to get the 3 torn bolts on top of Trans. my only complaint with these 4.0s! show a better way to get them out without taking transmission completely out
Nice build !! I have a 1998 cherokee sport 5 speed manual just bought, it acted like the flywheel had been hot and shuttering and shaking trying to take off in forward or reverse, put a new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and flywheel and it does the same thing, just wondering if u had seen this before, very frustrating thks for all ur expertise, enjoy ur channel
Great work! Thank you. I thought you showed where you can remove the gasket from a pressure cap and that shoots the fluid into the overflow bottle, then lets it suck back into the engine?
I believe it was derale but one of those aftermarket companies made a like transmission cooler it may be the engine oil cooler but it is a idea to look into because you could basically mount it in a frame rail or the bottom of the core support for example
Well more peace of mind for me my stroker and same afr it's very close to this video mines a 93 and stock ECU I would like to figure out why it won't go past 4200rpm but it will still run 80mph and make it 3 miles to local gas station for more 93 octane been reading and watching videos but nothing has helped the limited rpms, micro squirt and standalone harness in the future when funds allow just some easy break-in miles around the block until then
28:50 Cab Fires are scary! I've been there done that, glad it wasn't anything major!! I think it would be cool if you bring the 5.0 stroker XJ to the drag strip and get a base line before adding anymore mods then you can see how much better (or worse 🤣) the 5.0 stroker XJ is after the mods?
So have you found a way to get an adjustable fuel regulator on these fuel rails ? I thought about seeing if a 87-93 fox body bbk regular would fit the fuel rail and build my own mounting bracket
Hello sir - new to the channel - love this build and I see you are a Jeep enthusiast and I am just getting started. I have a 96 Cherokee (XJ) - pulled engine a couple months ago - got borerd and sleeved - re-installed and I can't get it to start - it turns over - attempts to start (maybe 1 second) but then sounds like it is being "shutoff" - just stops. Have tested and even replaced ASD, replaced CPS, etc. but I don't know what else to check. ANY IDEAS ??? Again love the channel and appreciate you taking us along on your journey.
How about this for a video.... fixing vacuum lines on a 4.7 My heat only works on defrost. I’ve tried to trace the lines but everything is so tight in there I can’t see much. 🤷🏻♂️
@2:55 I apologize, but I truly believed you were rocking the jeep to get it going to yabba dabba do it into the garage coasting down the hill like a madman. I will see myself out now. 😂😂😂
Dex what do you do about the old R12 AC units? Do you still use them or just chuck them in the trash? (I've seen your air compressor video, but wondering more about using them as AC again)
Reuse them for 134a or whatever they are using now, you can get the conversion kit at O’Reillys to change your R12 fittings over to 134a, but remember to only fill the 134a to 80% of the R12 capacity. I did this over 10 years ago to my 91 XJ and it works great to this day in 100+ degree temps.
Hey Dex, there's something out there called water wetter I think it's a pink fluid that drops your coolant temps by 30° I've had good luck with it in the past, you might want to check it out.
My xj with a 4.7l stroker will drift on dry pavement even being lifted and on 33s. I love it. I just need to get help with the death wobble, i emailed you hoping to have a conversation about it.

After spending the money and time on those parts I looked for another shop to fix the death wobble and install the bell housing bolts the first shop didn't put in, they only put in the bottom two and left those loose....... the second shop said I needed to double shear the right knuckle and the pitman arm, they charged me 1800 for the dropping of the engine and custom work and said all I needed was an alignment. On the way home the jeep did the wobble. It's very violent, around 40mph if I hit the right kinda bump it starts and don't stop till I slow down to 10mph. I took it for alignment with no change..... at this point I'm outta money and disgusted with the dang thing, I live in El paso Texas and this would be an awesome place to open a real shop. I was building this rig to start doing offroad recovery and now my xj still ain't usable and I'm broke af trying to get it right. The lift is short arm ....I blew my tire budget trying to fix the wobble so it's riding on 33in ko2s that are old af. But ride smooth and no broken belt or tread issues. The wobble didn't start till after the engine install and that whole mess was bad, I can't find anything loose, none of the other places I've taken it can find any loose parts either. It also has a new steering gear box and brace plates
