How to build a DIY tilting electric scooter with fat tyres and 4 hoverboard motors - start to finish

  • In this video you see me making a DIY powerful electric three wheeled fat tyre tilting scooter powered by 4 hoverboard motors at home in my garage. The video contains the full build start to finish.
I added chapters below to easily navigate through the video.
It has a full tilting mechanism on the rear wheels (like a tilting trike), a mono front swingarm and full suspension.
Wheels are from a lawnmower tractor.
Frame is built from 20mm, 25mm and 35mm tube with 2mm wall thickness.
Suspension bushings and front wheel spindle are from an 110cc ATV I had laying around.
Steering mechanism is made out of old bicycle parts. I also added a steering damper to make it more stable.
The knobs to fill the tubes and all cable fasteners were 3D printed.
    Technical details:
    4 hoverboard motors 36v 350w
4 brushless motor controllers BLDC 48v 350w with hall sensor control and GT-100 display (aliexpress)
    4 hoverboard lithium batteries 36v 4400mAh
top speed (with driver 65kg): 40 km/h on GPS
    range: 12 km
    tyresize: 16 x 7.50 - 8
    Chapters:
    0:00 - intro
0:20 - building the rear swingarms
7:50 - building the front swingarm
    12:45 - building the frame
17:35 - building the rear suspension
22:35 - building the front suspension and steering mechanism
29:35 - building the battery tray
    33:35 - spray painting everything
35:56 - presentation of the finished product and testdrive

    I admire this twofold;
    1) freehand skill and conceptual thinking can be seen everywhere (not only in the scooter)
    2) it works better at a lower budget than even NASA would consider viable

Hats off sir. I wasn’t excited by the look of the scooter at first but seeing you jazz up some of the finest engineering solutions I’ve ever seen on video was a profound experience. Very inspiring and exciting to see. A little too much steel but otherwise a tru joy to see. I would love to use you as a consultant engineer on future projects as your problem solving is par excellence. I never write comments and reviews, but here is a super long one.
    Congratulations.

he has versatile metal worker skills, for the engineering skills you need a deep test to see if it is really well designed indeed. Maybe it is too !
But what happens if the motor in one of the wheels stops (suden motor failure) and not in the other ? There will be a contrary pitching of the two wheels in relation to the frame, and a rotation of the scooter in yaw. Do the control electronics take it into account ?

I LOVE how you assemble everything basically freehand and with augenmaß™ practically in mid-air, and it still comes out shipshape! Also, here's finally someone who does not have five axes CNC machines, laser cutters, 3D printers and other luxuries in the workshop, but does everything with his hands and with basic tools!
