I’m not local to where you are now but I work at a large utility up the trail in Oregon. Sometimes turbines are down for maintenance but we also manage demand with wind. So if there not a lot of load demand, we may tell the wind farm operator to only spin up a percentage of their capacity. Hope that makes sense. Same thing happens in gas or hydro power but you can’t see it walking by.
this // i think you just helped me figure out why a plant by me only runs one of their two turbines at night more often than not thanks
When Windmills get dizzy, they have to stop for a little bit!
These videos really captured the vastness of the trail and the landscape. I can't do the no sleep thing. My rant would have been much more harsh. Happy Trails!!!
I've read other comments about the roaches at Hikertown. Yuck.
Amazing on such a long day and being tired. You gave us walk bys and great camera angles. Extra miles you could have saved. Thanks for going the extra mile for us. God Bless and keep on keeping on! 👍🙂🙏
I am local to lots of wind farms - Windfarms like any source of electricity need to be able to control the amount of voltage load they put onto the grid. So the systems that run the wind farms will use automation to turn off certain wind turbines. Can be for a lot of reasons, can be for power load management, for maintenance - if it's a particularly windy day, they may actually need to toggle some off to prevent TOO MUCH voltage from going onto the grid.
This is done with the turbine blades. The blades have the ability to "furl" (like to furl a sail) and they will turn their blades into the wind directly so that there's no "fan" action - the blades aren't tilted to generate motion from the wind. And eventually the blades will come to a stop until needed again, when the blades will turn again on an angle to be pushed by the wind again.
40 miles in 24 hours wow!! You are doing amazing!! Stay strong Frozen!!
Really like your adventure Frozen! Really like your positivity! And the views!!! Thank you for taking the time to vlog and tell us your story!!! Hike YOUR Hike! All the best, Karl
“Spread those smiles!”
You are amazing!
Frozen - I seem to remember that you're a Penguins fan so you might appreciate this. Whenever you show give a shot of Bigfoot for some reason I pick up Tuukka Rask vibes.
Here's a "like" for the algorithm.
Enjoying this adventure, Frozen. The AT was great to watch, and your spirit is inspiring. Thanks for the work you do to keep these videos going while you're on trail.
Great videos. Keep on trekking.
Aweeee Flowers
You are doing amazing! Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
4:00am?!? I don’t wanna!
Frozen be encouraged! You finished the AT and it was great to follow you on that journey. Way to go!! It’s interesting to see terrain in your vlogs I will never see in person. Look back on early risers advice for recovery. I’m not a through hiker but I’ve learned a lot from watching him. Best to you on this incredible adventure.
Love you stuff mate keep up the good work 🇦🇺💚💛
I hope you were able to get the rest you needed and a new massage ball while in town! Thanks for the new views of the trail. You’re doing great Frozen!
You are doing great! Hope you sleep well. Like what Sydney Reader said, they only turn them on when they need power. Keep safe.
i think syndeyreader has it about the the windmills, maintenance likely when it is only a few. such a great couple days out there, glad you had good weather!! and you got to cross 58 hooray! my favorite pct crossing, ill try and do a little trail magic there next week myself. So happy you get to see all this stuff in person, you have some really fun days ahead / please keep that belt off in the creek crossings and thanks for sharing all of this with us
❤❤❤ amazing work
You are doing a great job Frozen. Watching you on big screen tonight. God Bless
Looks so dry, but those flowers would make me happy 😊
Amazing job, Eric. You truly captured the adventure. I am very thankful to have shared this unbelievable adventure with you, Kristi, and the rest of our amazing group . Until our next trip...
We did that section in 5/2020. Just seeing those sunsets & sunrises makes me miss Tehachapi so much. Keep makin' tracks! 🐻🌲
Still waiting to see some cowboy camping!
Thank you!
Your hat and the sun flash-banged me over and over lol 😂
Loving this series!!
Fatigue should be dealt with cautiously as it takes no time to be injured. Don’t know if you can sense my spirit hiking vicariously with you but thank you for all the beautiful footage
⛺️ for the algorithm
Thx for the great video even though you’re drained! Hope you enjoy your 12 showers 😂
Yes, likely down for maintenance.
Hope you're able to replace your cork ball in Tehachapi. Safe travels!
I’m an engineer for turbines connected windmills most of the time they are broken and that’s why they aren’t spinning. As for load demand yes that’s true in part, but regardless the windmills you are seeing aren’t for load demand in that area because California gets a large majority of power from Utah. Windmills break every 5 minutes. Hey it’s great watching and I’m super motivated watching you Bigfoot and high5. Best wishes.
Drive that struggle bus dude.
😂
I've watched a lot of videos of people thru hiking the PCT and I have not heard many good things about Hikertown yet.
Frozen, sounds like you got bit by a bed bug. Hopefully they aren’t hitching with you in your gear. Keep a close eye.
👍👍👍🥾🥾🥾
When they turn all the fans off, it gets really stuffy.
What the guy was trying to do for the turtle was totally true. I am not sure if it applies to all turtles but I live in VA and it does with turtles here. Turtles have a radius or area in which they are born/grow and they will move within these areas during their life span. If a turtle is taken out of this radius or area they will literally die because they cannot find their way home as the installed "GPS" map they have gets messed up and so they end up lost. This is why people here will stop and take a turtle in the road and place it on the other side so it will not get crushed trying to make it to another place on their "GPS" tracker. It just so happened that this dudes turtle took one great leap for its kind but there was prolly a better way for it to get down it just made the wrong choice! Even young turtles have a learning curve! LOL
Turtle story was hilarious 😂
Did you crop dust me at 10:21? 😮
I think the fans are angled in different directions, so depending on the wind's direction some won't turn.
they are all able to move into the wind, they actually have to so they can shut down when it is too windy. If they stayed fixed in a crosswind they could be broken. sydneyreader has a good description above about why they shut off sometimes. likely those few are just down for maintenance.
Nice. Learned something new. Always thought it was the direction.
@@mattc3780 at this point majority of them even flatten out the props when they are not turning to reduce wear!
Maybe I missed it but why the night hike?
By day it's too hot.
@@t.vanoosterhout233 thanks
As others have said, it's too hot and dry. The sand and gravel reflect heat back up so it's like an oven the entire way.
What better ultraventure 3 or mnt racer 3
Ditto...I am hiking in ultraventures, but thinking about mountain racers next????
So hopefully you both see this. The ultraventures are a little more padded and comfortable but keep you on your foot bottoms / heels. The mountain racers have better tread for technical terrain. I also feel they move you from your toes to the next step but could cause some Achilles issues. I have since switched back to the ultraventures. But I do prefer the speed of the mountain racers. Bigfoot is now in the mountain racers from altra lone peaks and he is loving them..
Thank you for getting back on this.
FYI - it takes approximately 700 gallons of oil per year, per wind generator to run the darn thing. Also, the blades can’t be recycled so the get buried. 😮
Not true, a quick G search shows how blade recycling has been advancing over the years.
@KrawnKam hmmmm, ok, I'll looknit up again. As for the 700-ish gallons of oil per year the G seaech still stands.
Notably, though, the oil is used for lubrication so it isn’t being burned and releasing greenhouse gases.
Correct...a facility now takes the blades, grinds them up and they are used as reinforcement in concrete
@@EdwardGomillion I never commented on the oil usage only the blade situation. Also if you are so worried about lubrication, one turbine can power roughly 4000 electric cars and over a year you would need in excess of 15,000 gallons of motor oil for that many ICE vehicles.
Where is bigfoot from?
netherlands he says in an earlier episode im like 95% sure. Frozen hasnt been able to reply to very many comments but if you can find the episode bigfoot shows up in i think he says. like 4 or 5 i think.
All I can say is, "atta boy. Frozen !" I love your honesty about your experience . And I gotta just give you a big pat on the back. I am so proud of you! And by the way, I wonder how many of us are hiking right there with you in spirit, sending you on to Canada, one step at a time. 👍😀
Holland
this reminds me of a little seinfeld comedy: "Holland is the Netherlands"/ "then who are the Dutch!?" hahaha
I get that people want to innovate new ways to power our world….but I really don’t think wind turbines are it. Plus I feel they really ruin the views, but I know some people think they look cool.
