    Thank you for this video. It was very helpful and gives me the courage to try stringing myself. I break strings so often so im sure this skill should eventually pay for itself.

    Thanks for making the video. There are a few suggestions for you. First of all when you start your mains, I wouldn’t put my flying clamp in the middle and then double pull both ends. You lose too much tension this way that you cannot recover. A better approach without using a starting clamp is to put the flying clamp as close to the top and then pull one side at a time. Don’t double pull. You lose the least amount of tension this way. Second, the tie off knot needs to pulled forward and then rocked back and forth with tension. If you just pull back you cannot remove all the slack and you lose a lot of tension. Also I would use a set of needle nose pliers to help pull. Your hands are too soft to get a good pull. Third, I would use a starting knot at the beginning of the crosses. You can get away with using your tie off knot if the grommets are in new condition but as the grommets get more used they will open up and you could lose tension over time. Worst case is that you slip. Fourth, you don’t need to walk off the string in the beginning, all you have to do is hold the ends together and pull making sure that both ends extend equally with same amount of pull. This takes next to nothing in time and will save you a ton of time over your approach. As you do more stringing you will get more efficient. Maybe you make another video in a year with your found knowledge. Hope that helps.

      Hey, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment this advice. I have been working as a stringer for the past few months part time as I'm still in college, and have been trained by a Master Racket Technician. I've been using electric machines, and now do what you advise with the tie off knot pulling to get rid of slack. It takes me about 30-35 minutes to complete a racket with the electric machines (we have a Wilson and a Gamma), and I haven't used the drop weight machine in quite a while, but will definitely try what you stated in the beginning of your comment next time I string with it. I definitely need to update this tutorial, though I think for beginners, it is a good start. I will make more videos with both one piece and two piece tutorials, showing the variety between different rackets and string. Again, thank you.

      Alan Grandman I would recommend you also string 2 mains at a time as in when you start do 2 mains on the right, then switch to the left and then do 4 mains and then switch back to the right. Doing this will help you do 2 ahead and it will keep the frame more even with the tension distribution.

    You should string the mains so that you work outward in both directions, one side no further than three mains ahead of the other. (I don’t do more than 1 ahead). Having that much force on just half of the racket could crack the frame. Same reason you don’t start cutting out strings from the outside of the frame. It likely will still turn out fine, but is bad practice, especially if stringing for other people.

    Do you find that the tension comes out accurate?

    FYI. It's not impossible to get the start holes wrong, so I mark the start points at the tip and the throat with stickers before cutting away the old strings.

    I’ve got a gamma progression II and when I drop the weight to pull tension it makes a really loud clanking noise, any idea what it is? Also sometimes the drop weight only goes like 1/4 of the way down and I can’t get it parallel so you know why that is either?

    How many cats does it take for a set of strings?

    Should my string loosen a little after I take up the weight with the clamp on?

    Great Vid - shows me I don't want to own one of these and I'm very happy with letting my club pro do it.

    why does my drop weight never go horizontal it always goes below

    • @AlanGrandman
      @AlanGrandman  6 років тому

      Great question. I demonstrate how to make it horizontal at 7:36-7:52. If it goes below you need to hold on and push up like I do at 7:46.

      ty. what if it goes above horizontal. i was stringing first time and didnt know what to do if it went above horizontal

    • @AlanGrandman
      @AlanGrandman  6 років тому

      If it goes above horizontal then redo it. Meaning undo the string from the drop weight and wrap it around again, then drop again, and so on. There are some cases where it's a little confusing and this is when I would say experience comes in hand as you need to have a good feel for the machine.
