Video no. 27 features on of my favorite études.
Built on one of the Rachmaninoff’s most common motives, Dies Irae, it has a unique sound and poetic quality.
In his letter to Respigni, who orchestrated five of his études, Rachmaninoff described this etude as inspired by “The Sea and the Seagulls”.
Personally, I’d never have imagined that, but perhaps that’s why he didn’t provide a name to any of them.
The closest connection I can sense is the tonal and motive relations with Chopin’s second prelude, also in A minor (op.28).
