The same thing just happened to me. Customer had a company draw up a really expansive 3D design. Asked me to bid on it. Im a one man wrecking crew lol that won Best Landscape Contractor in my area for 2024. The customer ended up going with me due to lack of communication from the big company with their fancy 3D design. Monday is phase one, a paver walkway and some steps. After they want me to also install 2 separate paver patios, flagstone work and some steps and other things. I definitely didnt come in "cheap" though. The way you communicate is a big deal with customers and who they hire and recommend. Of course, the quality of your work. Ive been in business 6 years and have learned HUGE amounts from you and your videos! thank you for the great content.
That is very cool, that is a perspective I did not talk about...lol. Sounds like that company dropped the ball and you picked it up. Nothing wrong with that, sounds like an awesome project! And I totally agree about communication with the customer, it is what builds the trust needed to get the job and even future jobs. Nothing better than going back to a property for another project. Learning the designing programs through YT or just playing around takes a long time and if you're not doing certain things all the time you forget. I'd say a showcase of what you have done far outweighs any drawing by hand or by software especially if you show what it was before as sometimes that can be just as impressive to a customer. "Oh it went from that to THAT??" I remember this one and it came out great and good thing those driveway folks didn't screw up your lines! And if you didn't work on junk days like that, it would mean you'd have to consider making up for it on days that you could be disc golfing!
That's exactly why I haven't committed to a software yet, just don't have the time to learn it all to use it a couple times a year... I agree, before and after's work perfectly, especially when you got all the in between like I do on UA-cam. I agree with not doing intricate 3d design ... your best advert is youtube to show process and picture of past projects ... simple sketches should be all that is needed besides reputation ... love the way you work and grow
At the 27 minute mark. How do you determine how many steps and how to design a concept for a hardscape to meet your threshold from the door to the asphalt driveway?

Both of you guys have been a huge help but your videos are my favorite to watch when I’m wanting to just chill and relax and still learn something I’m passionate about. Thank you for your content
I agree with 3d designs. That’s why we charge for the design and credit it back to the client if they hire us for the job. Gets a little skin in the game from them and also give us a chance to build a working relationship. If they hire another company and use our design they still paid us for our time

I'm pretty sure it was... I have seen a lot of walls crumble like this. But Versa Lok seems to always have really bad efflorescence issues, which causes the faces of the blocks to crumble after awhile. Never used them before, mostly for that reason... ✌
My favorite is when you spend all the time with the customer and design and they take your design and hire somebody else and you go back and see somebody else doing your exact design Very frustrating
Right...? It is amazing how often that happens in this industry. It's like some people use professionals who are kind enough to give free estimates as free consults. That is what I am moving away from. There is only a certain amount of time you get from for a free estimate. You learn your lesson after awhile... Happy New Year brother! ✌

Price range per square foot on 500 square feet? I’ve heard $26-$36…. Is that about right for your area (I’m from Wisconsin).
I do $28-30 for most flatwork in Wisconsin too.
That is right on point with pricing here too. The higher side can come with more cuts and customization / more expensive pavers.
