While the HL3 momentum is definitely starting to warm up, this might still be just an artwork piece. I used to be a game concept art lead and it was extremely common for artists to just build their own 3D models and render them for use in paint-overs. Concept artists use a lot of tools and sources for their work, especially when making production art. Still, there's the possiblilty they're using something from an upcoming title but my gut feeling is just built for render and paintover to match the existing design with higher fidelity.

Okay, while you are absolutely right about that, legit, I would prefer Valve taking their time than milking everything and ruining their entire reputation to the ground. Part of it feels bittersweet. We dont have any reason to believe there will be good mod support or any of the tools that made half life 2 so profound. Who knows, maybe im wrong. But it doesnt seem like 2024 valve to include these things.

You have to use third party websites for a reliable server list. These servers have no visibility. Only some servers where you test skins before you buy them have people in them. Yeah, there's workshop support for these games, but there's no SDK for source 2. source 2 games have been lacking in mod support. Yes it exists, but if you're acting like Half-Life Alyx or CS2 mods are anywhere near the popularity or accessibility of Half-Life 1 & 2/CSS & CSGO mods, you're not being entirely objective.
That could easily be the hi-poly model of the original gravity gun. In game design, you make a highly detailed model, then you make a low poly version and bake the details of the hi-poly onto the low poly so that it will run smoothly in real-time renderers.
Something I like about (SPOILER ALERT, IF YOU KEEP READING NOW IT'S YOUR OWN FAULT) how the old HL2:E2 ending being retconned, is that it throws the whole Half Life world into jeopardy. Why do I say this? Well, we already witnessed what the Half Life world looks like far in the future, Portal 2. We catch a glimpse of what it looks like underground, on the surface, and from the moon itself. But now that the timeline has changed with Alyx being taken by the GMan and Eli being resurrected, we have no clue what happens in the future this time around. For all we know, the moon could get blown up in the new timeline, which would indirectly get Chell killed in the far future. It's a crazy example I know, but you get the point I am trying to make.
Likewise though it feels as if they will take the expectations of epistle 3 and hints they've dropped and subvert them by having this change in the timeline cause things to play out differently

The original artist said on twitter he had to remake the art and he used blender to make a grav gun (an other models) for that specific artpiece (then he handpainted some parts idk is his workflow)

tough eli's resurrection is a retcon it was e well planned one the gman's influence on alyx was already quite estabilished, and it almost feels intentional not often i feel like retcons did their job well in keeping the story going or fitting well into a story but HLA's ending retcon does fit quite nicely

Half life Alyx has blown my mind more than the previous half life games that I was there for. 2 was incredible, but alyx on a quest 3 is absolutely mind-boggling. Valve makes such good games. I want HL3 so bad.

The reason they recton the story of episode 2 was because how the writers backed themselves into a wall that time. There was no way to fix the story after that. So using Gman as a in-world way to fix a issue corrected this.

Artist probably made a model all by himself just for this artwork. Pretty sure hlx won't feature gravity gun on a separate slot like at all. It's too archaic. Probably would be alyx-esque glove or something adhoc which would have it's own assigned key
I still think that it is very interesting with how every HL game has had so much innovation. I just hope they realize that graphical fidelity is not the same thing as innovation.

high quality models have to be made for promotional purposes like these key art pieces and to bake details into lower poly meshes that actually go into the game, it's clear that the design used for that gravity gun is the same in HL2, HL2's models are merely scaled down in complexity due to it being a 2004 and earlier asset. They would not put the gravity gun they're developing for a future project in this, and you shouldn't even expect the gravity gun to look similar to what it looks like in hl2.

Alyx was so awesome in VR. I guess most people would like to play the next half life on desktop but if they added a VR mode as well.... yeah I would REALLY like that
