I have flown in and out of Catalina many times. The first few times was with an instructor and he taught me that an approach to the west, over the cliff be steeper than normal because of the wind tucking down over the cliff. Take off to the west is normal. Losing power and going down is not good. There is no good flat spots to set down on.
Catalina is probably the most challenging airport in SoCal. Wonderful to fly to, but you have to be on your toes, and not a lot of forgiveness if things go wrong. So sad for everyone and their loved ones. RIP.
I have visited there and its considered a very difficult airport to takeoff and land with short runway and wind sheer, steep moutainous area on either side. Condolences to the families.
A Beech 95-B55 Baron, N73WA, was destroyed when it crashed shortly after takeoff from runway 22 at Catalina Airport (AVX/AVX), Avalon, California. All occupants were fatally injured. ADS-B data shows the airplane climbing to an altitude of about 75 ft agl before it entered a descent just off the departure end of the runway. The last ADS-B return showed an average rate of about -1700 fpm. The nearest weather station was reporting an overcast layer at 700-800 ft.
That field can really psych out a first time visitor because the runway has a hump at the halfway point and when landing you cannot see the additional length. This feature can make pilot think he/she is about to run out of runway. The mistake then is to abort the landing and initiate a go-around and in a heavily loaded twin this may not work out so well. Additionally, the field has no trees to serve as height reference and this combined with the fact that the approach end is basically blue water and a massively tall cliff then the strip.
I use to flight instruct in the LA area and have been to that airport half a dozen times. We would fly over for Bison burgers. On your 1st flight over there its best to take someone along who knows that runway..
Fact check your story before getting the public confused. Because one way or the other someone is lying or being lied to. Left Santa Monica Airport going to Catalina Island. Plane registration from a Aviation School in Santa Monica. Your saying crashed at take of. Which one up or down not hard to figure out.
Flightaware has it departing from Catalina. The airport is closed at dark, they were not allowed to take off but did. Fog in the area, the plane never got very high. Probably spatial disorientation if I had to take a guess. Gethomeitis takes more lives.
"Left Santa Monica Airport going to Catalina Island." I didn't hear them say that. They said the airplane was registered to a flight school out of Santa Monica. The story consistently stated the airplane was taking off from Catalina. Can you provide a time stamp where you think they lied or were lied to? Incorrect information *(if there were any)* is not necessarily a lie. People make honest mistakes all the time without lying.
@@EJWash57 No way to know with the information given but it looks like spatial disorientation. Could be fog or it could the block hole phenomenon that is often associated with night over water. Venice Airport in Florida has had several accidents due to that situation.

AVX if I recall. I can land the F-16 on Google Earth flight simulator without splashing. Took a lot of practice. Like a carrier landing. Full flap stall speed cut engine at the edge... HIT the brakes. Don't spill your beer. But that's only a game. It must be terrifying to look at in real life cockpit.
While this is a very tragic story, and I feel sorry for all involved, including their families, it is a really bad advertisement for that particular flight school. In a similar type of incident, I remember, many, many years ago shortly after I got my scuba diving certification, there was another school in the same area who’s owner was known to be a bit of a show off, he took his group of newbies into a “bottomless lake” (fairly common in Florida), and lost one of his students. Very sad, but it was not a good advertisement for that particular school.
No, they don’t, I fly a plane built in 63, it’s never “dropped” out of the sky. Mechanical problems are a very small issue. This was a plane that was under a flying club type of business, any plane that is rented must be inspected every 100 hrs and a yearly annual inspection
@@HustleMuscleGhias Yeah, 4 seaters hold 2 adults, and 2 small kids with no luggage. I just recently took a dive on small planes and was shocked at how small of a weight limit they have.

True my father was a pilot and always told me how dangerous Catalina Runway was.

I've seen many go-arounds at AVX.
Who wants to bet someone on that plane was in possession of information that would be detrimental if disseminated…?

Interesting that the automatic iPhone crash feature provided the initial notification. RIP
Another reason I'm glad that I'm not rich.
More people die in car accidents than they do in planes 🤷

How does this affect the Wine Mixer?
This is not the aircraft called Consolidated PBY Catalina or its water bomber variant.
