If I ever need to get through a door (which admittedly is not often) I don't target the handle, I target the hinges. Doors are weak - they are bolted to wood (usually). Want to get through a door in a hurry? Kick out the hinges, taking the frame with it. Your best defense against a home intruder is a weapon of any kind and the willingness to use it. Also... get used to getting hurt. Its stunning how many people freeze because they got hit. Practice with a friend and amp it up as much as you can - get used to being hit, hard, and fast. In a crisis (even a car wreck etc) the ability to think clearly and act while in pain is invaluable - not just your life but others may rely on it. If you find yourself trapped, don't just look at Doors and Windows, look at physical weaknesses in walls, floors, ceilings etc. Most structures have weak points that even something as basic as a fire extinguisher can be used to pry open. If its an office or business premises, it's almost certainly got both a raised floor and a dropped ceiling for additional cabling. You can use that. America etc is easy - those guys make their walls out of board - you can just punch through. Here in Europe its harder - the walls are actual brick. You can still get through, but its loud and messy. Not good if you're trying to escape un noticed. Wire fences? Easy. Bottom right or left, you can untangle them by hand - the first join is hard, but once thats done... just unthread the strand and you have an opening as large or small as you want. Rolls of cotton wool are a cheap and easy way over barbed wire - don't bother trying to cut it. Too long, too noisy and usually alarmed. Again - cotton wool for broken glass.
