    I feel you on this topic, I just feel like the biggest misconception we as comic artists is that we only need to draw and that it. Which hasn’t been the fact ever. Only a few comic artist made it just off there art alone without a name. Most artist since like the 70&80s had to hit the convention circuit, submit portfolios and all that. Tbh its easier you put yourself on more than ever. Just need to have that drive and energy to never give up. To work smarter not harder!

      Absolutely man! I bet even most mangaka have had to hustle to get a foot in the door at first.

    I needed to see this..the process is all ebb and flow. The Ebb is where you face obstacles, hindrances, distractions, and full setbacks to interrupt or terminate your comic career before it even starts. You must be able to navigate and adapt to this process and prepare for rejection and face even a smaller rate of return that you invested. and be ok

      Absolutely Chris! I believe every artist who's "made it" has gone through the same or more!

    Great observations, man. There are certainly more routes to becoming a comic book creator now than there were back in the day. However, because of current-era advantages, accessibility, social media outreach, etc., everybody is putting out a comic now and fighting for the limelight and the readers' dollars. It's almost impossible for an individual, up-and-coming creator (who doesn't already have a massive following or a previous mainstream career) to stand out in the sea of creators without a solid game plan. And because we're mostly unknown creators without corporate backers and wealthy investors, we have to take on not only the creative responsibilities but the advertisement and marketing responsibilities as well. Ed Piskor said it best over on the Cartoonist Kayfabe channel -- In a perfect world, every cartoonist would have a personal assistant that handles all the bs while we focus on creation. (I'm paraphrasing.)

      Thanks Panda! I think the more we invest into comics, the more we can get to a point where we can actually hire help. It just takes years to get there for most!

    Oh yeah, what you're saying applies to just about every creative field. I've been working at this my whole life. I get satisfaction from the process. I have a day job to pay the bills. I wish you luck and success.

    You became one of my favorite indie comic artist alongside koffee comics. Also what you said about beating manga while making one isn’t going to work is true. I try to stand out

    i never would have thought that the drawing part of the comic was actually the easier parts of making money especially as an indie artist

    I feel your pain, as a novel writer myself trying to get a agent or a publisher is like pulling all your teeth out. They tell Authors that they are there for them, but never really give them to knowledge to move forward into a career.

    • @TheComiKen
      @TheComiKen  5 місяців тому

      I've actually heard that you need a certain amount of followers online to even get an agent these days (at least in graphic novels) is it the same in novels?

    I don’t think the one panel at a time makes for decent page layouts fullstop. Thumbnail thumbnail thumbnail. The art will come, lay your pages out, iterate quickly to fail fast, and then by the time it comes to finish the art it’s all figured out, a d basically manual labour, because you’ve done all the more difficult creative work already,
    And don’t let UA-cam become a form of procrastination, that’s a big trap in my opinion. Post your actual process, not your thought process mate. GL
