There was fear; the youngest, the unhardened by previous battles between the Gaels themselves, maybe, because they were too honorable to face their own kind, or because they were too coward to spoil their clothes with the blood of an unknown... Eogan could not blame them, he used to be like them, he was a young boy sometime. Long ago he thought "God forgive me, for I shall not kill" while his sword trembled in his hand, seeing the enemy army against the rising sun of the morning . How would he kill a man of his own? A man that sowed the same soil he did? But the words of priests and Christ himself may be unheard in a man's heart when the sword of other is just inches to his heart... but this time it was no Gael, not man-of-other-clan, or other kingdom, which he and his fellow war-companions waited in that mortificating shore, where the once pleasing sound of the waves now was a sound of desesperation... Foreigners, "Norsemen", the Saxons and the priests called them ruthless, heathen, spoils of the Devil. The Irish army was the only thing between them, and the rich monasteries and beloved town of the Celts. For a moment, Eogan succumbed to the tentation pf searching between the Old Gods of his ancestors: could those old gods could give him the strength and violence which the gods of the Norse give to the them?
He had saw them fight earlier, against smaller armies trying to repel them before they continued raiding their land. It didn't matter, if there was a time to pray, to any god or saint, it was in that moment: in the horizon, between the fogs, which seemed to be a good amount of ships showed, quickly they reached the shore between screaming in a foreign and barbaric tongue, invocations of pagan gods, and plain screaming. There was a brief exchange of arrows while they landed, both armies formed shield walls, and crashed in bloodshed and slaughter. Sand became reddish mud, every ma could feel the dispair and death of the one next to him. It wasn't much until the Gaelic army managed to repel their enemies, which covered their retreat with arrows from those left behind in the ships... but why were there some that didn't joined the battle even when losing? His doubts were answered when he looked above the shield and saw the Vikings not going to their ships but putting themselves again in battle position... and charging again but now with screams also sorrounding the Gaels from the flanks and the reer...
