To be honest, while Axe is a great drummer I always preferred Lopez's style. This is not an Oldpeth vs NewPeth thing, just love the tastefulness of Lopez style:) Also, such a great song and nice to see you checking it out.

I feel like this song doesn't get the attention it deserves. It's always been one of my favorites, but I rarely see people mention it when talking about Opeth. Also, the fadeout works within the context of the album as it transitions into a super mellow interlude track.

It's just so hard to point to one specific Opeth song with their massive library of amazing songs. But yes this does get overlooked a bit, even though I personally prefer the harder tracks.

It's the only song I listen to from the deliverance album. I just don't like the growls in the album. I love blackwater Park, and songs like Heir Apparent. But I just can't get behind deliverance. Don't know why.

@@Hanz_Goober Because Mikael was drained and going through the motions in this record, and maybe A fair judgement reflected his sombre reticence and acted as a catharsis for him.

the fadeout is literally perfect for that riff. The riff is basically written to loop endlessly, so the best way to end it is to have the riff keep playing, slowly disappearing into the void.

That is the exact feeling that I feel, and it is so dominating and also makes me feel overwhelmed in the perfect way. The fadeout imo was the better route with this song.

I really want you to hear Grand Conjuration but at the same time not. It's one of their hardest and most sinister sounding tracks with mostly demon so you might find it to be too much, but it's so flawlessly composed and performed it's a must-hear.

I believe it was Steven Wilson playing the piano here. Awesome track, very underrated. I don't think you've disliked any Opeth track. Their discography is just so full of awesome stuff. I don't know many artists that are at this level of consistency on the quality of the music. Some might like older or newer Opeth more but it's never bad or filler music.

Their first keyboardist that played on the album and live, was 2005 on the Ghost Reveries album. Per Wiberg. Piano and keys on previous albums (Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation) was by Steven Wilson. The 'keyboard guy' you often reference is Joakim Svalberg, whom didn't join the band until after the 2011's Heritage was completed. His first album he played on was Pale Communion, 2014.

When I listen to an Opeth track like this one that I haven't heard in a while it just amazes me how great it is. Btw Drummer Martin Lopes is now in a band called Soen which is really good. Some say they sound a bit like Opeth and Tool.

I love Soen! Fun fact: when I found Soen, I created a playlist called 'Opeth + Soen' (you can probably find it on Spotify), because I thought they went so well together. What's funny is that I didn't know the band members back then and didn't know that Martin Lopez used to be in Opeth; blew my mind when I finally discovered it, but it explained a lot.

    Nothing beats early 2000's Opeth.
Many people complained about this song's ending. I thought it was good, but could have been better by ending it right after he said "Nothing...left....here". End the song. Oh well.
This era of Opeth Mikael says was the worst era of Opeth, he constantly complained about Peter Lingren (the other guitarist) about contributing nothing to this album. Mikael wrote all the lyrics and the music to Deliverance. Plus Martin Lopez (Opeth's best drummer IMHO) had panic attacks on stage.
Akerfeldt thought it could have been a much better album. But it's still head and shoulders above other bands best efforts.
It's not BWP, but what else is?
I knew you'd complain about the ending Lauren.
Hey, next time you listen to it, just hit the stop button right after those final 3 words.
    Song fixed and gets a 10. :))

  • @Henriktranoy
    @Henriktranoy 2 роки тому +1

I think the fadeout fits well with the story the song conveys for me. Someone who is very filled with regret and despair, who in the end of the song is resigning themselves to their fate, where the heavy mood feels like getting darker and more heavy on each repetition. The fadeout works as there is no escape, only the endless spiral downwards.

In Pop music fade-outs are a cheap trick to make a song get stuck in your head. I usually don't like that either and Opeth usually don't do that. So I guess it was an intentional artistic choice for this song, probably has some meaning it. I just don't know what it is. Mikael's reasons are mostly "because it sounded cool".

Check out this live version for wicked ending (instead of fade-out): ua-cam.com/video/Sj8Ghdimtd4/v-deo.html. Song starts at 1:17:55. A full no-demon gig + KG.

I agree about the fade out.I called it the "cop out"
When you are playing live you can't fade out, so you have to morph into another song, or write an ending anyway.
When I was younger I had an original band, we recorded an album, & I insisted EVERY song have an ending, & was therfore instrumental in writing alot of them.

You're drunk. Many bands utilize this with their ending riff which is supposed to be the punchiest and leaves you to reflect. Gojira is really good about this too

Love the Opeth reactions. How about a different, but similarly awesome band?

So.. there was a demon after all, he just said nothing.
PS: The fade out was perfect for that riff, studio recordings don’t work the same way as live shows do. If you want a clean cut ending to this one though, check out their live version in London. An even slower, heart breaking performance (and which is actually the last track of the show). Greetings from Scandinavia (Norway), you’re funny.
