Journeyman air traffic controllers were GS-9’s when a friend of mine resigned more than 45 years ago due to excessive stress and fatigue. At that time, they were overworked and underpaid. I hope, by now, they got an upgrade to at least GS-11.
Typically when they become fully qualified they get promoted to GS-11 or GS-12, I’m prior military ATC and worked with some civilians during that time as well. Training for the job is so intense, it’s difficult for me to hear anyone say that they are DEI hires because even military training for the job is rigorous and many wash out of the program. If you make it, you’re very qualified.
During my active military years, I had two friends who were ATC, and the training back then was extremely intense. The dropout rate was at 60%. Those who did make it were highly trained. I can't even imagine the stress that ATC goes through

When I applied to become an ATC several decades ago, I was turned away and told that they didn't need anyone at the time and to just wait until a new exam comes out to re-apply. I applied twice, and twice I was turned down. So I moved on. 2 of my friends, who also applied, also got turned down.

The owners were terrible, a manager was stealing, and I didn't even have the most hours. When I'd been there two weeks, a manager had to go to the bank to get $5 bills, put me in charge because I'd been there the longest .... 😅 Ultimately I quit because the owners took me off the work schedule because I was seeing a cardiologist....... That store property is now a student housing apartment complex. 😂

This talk goes on every time there is an accident like this. THERE ARE NEVER ENOUGH AIR TRAFIC TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS. It’s a difficult job which takes years to be competent…..like 5 years and even then there’s more training.
However, if you study aircraft accidents, almost every time the cause is "pilot error", not anything related to air traffic controllers as being the primary accident cause.
Just watched a local news interview of a black retired ATC with decades of experience. His father and stepmother were ATCs. Really informative. He said you have to start training before the age of 31, pass the tests, and then get assigned an airport where you apply general learning to the unique characteristics of that airport, and everyone is forced to retire active control at age 56.

This talk goes on every time there is an accident like this. THERE ARE NEVER ENOUGH AIR TRAFIC TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS. It’s a difficult job which takes years to be competent…..like 5 years and even then there’s more training.
Qualified people were not hired.
However, if you study aircraft accidents, almost every time the cause is "pilot error", not anything related to air traffic controllers as being the primary accident cause.
Just watched a local news interview of a black retired ATC with decades of experience. His father and stepmother were ATCs. Really informative. He said you have to start training before the age of 31, pass the tests, and then get assigned an airport where you apply general learning to the unique characteristics of that airport, and everyone is forced to retire active control at age 56.
