    Also, when you mentioned the Prescott hill run and said you live 10 mins away, I was like: “He lives in Arizona? We have a hill run in Prescott? Say whaaaa?!”

    One of the first things you need to do is change the rake of the steering column for special building. See if you can get a copy of Austin 7 Companion published by 750 Motor Club, the Austin 7 builders bible. I have built 2 specials, one of which was a Roach RTC which featured on the Roach brochure. The publication has also articles on fitting the Reliant power train.

    As an owner of two 1930 specials and a 1933 saloon, I will follow your build. When I built my wooden bodied boat tail special in the 70s I used the film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" as inspiration. Plus being a carpenter helped with the decision! My other special has a simple two seater body built in the 50s. The student who built it sold it to a late friend of mine. He told her that he used aluminium from a spitfire, the WW2 fighter, not the car. She bought the car in 1958, her first car. She bought the 1933 saloon in 1961, her second car. She left them to me in her will. I have subscribed.

    Looking forward to seeing this, I'm sure it's going to be special and elegant. There will be plenty of advice along the way, not all of it welcome! A few things to keep in mind, when those points are reached, that can get forgotten about. Consider the travel limits of your suspension when positioning the engine and transmission, particularly with respect to the propshaft angles. Keep in the back of your mind how you will carry out maintenance, access to filters, carburetor, plugs etc. Airflow within the engine compartment is important, cooling air has to have somewhere to go after it passes over the radiator / oil cooler and carburetors prefer a clean cool flow. Leave enough "slack" in your wiring to allow for movement and disconnecting components, secure the loom to minimise any chance of road debris catching it and add extra protection at the securing points. Plan your fuel lines as straight as possible, it's always tempting to bend it around an obstacle and air locks are a pain to clear. That's plenty to be going on with.

    this should be fun! if you're open to suggestions, you might consider a decent bike engine. or anything really (alfa boxer four? V4 ford/saab? both nice & compact), reliant engines seem to be the bog standard go-to for a lot of austin 7 builds. whatever bakes your cake, it'll all be fun.

    • @Metal_shaper_tom
      @Metal_shaper_tom  Рік тому

      Personally a bike engine in this with the look I’m after doesn’t go and in my opinion a bit chav. From what I know the engines you have suggested would still be quite big and require chopping quite a bit of the chassis and in this build I don’t won’t to go down that road . May do in the future of another build. I think the reliant is Just a proven formula. 65hp on something that’s about 350kg will still be pretty nippy and with my mechanical knowledge this is all I can handle to start with.

      Down to money. I can buy a running 850 with gearbox for £500. I could spend that and more on a non working Austin engine and the then spend at least 2k having it built. I’m not bothered by authenticity or competing in vscc. I’d rather a good looking car with a reliable more modern engine that I can go and enjoy. Just my opinion. My mods will be reversible in case I’m fortunate enough to get an Austin engine later on .
