As a Zambian who lived through his entire presidency and events prior to it, I find it difficult to dispute any of the facts presented. I think your video is spot on. He was one of our finest presidents. He left our economy on solid ground and people were generally afraid to engage in corrupt activities on his watch. My only criticism of him is that, as a prominent lawyer/ state council, he should have sorted out our extremely divisive constitution within 3 years of his presidency. But he was stubborn, and dragged the issue all the way into his second term up until his death. Zambians are still grappling with a bad constitution to this day. His stubbornness lived up to his nickname of "Ichibuumba". The wall. You couldn't get through him.
As for the video, the only part I would disagree with is the motive narrated for appointing opposition leaders as ministers. He did not do it for national unity, it was self serving. Mwanawasa won the 2001 elections with only 28% of total votes. Meaning that 72% percent of the voters rejected him. He benefitted from a divided opposition were 10 candidates from various parties were floated against him. This served to divide the opposition-vote to their own detriment. Mwanawasa at the time of his inauguration was the most unpopular president to have ever entered state house, with a minority vote of 28%. His sponsors, the ruling party - MMD, had also lost a lot of seats to the opposition. His MP numbers in Parliament were so low that he would not be able push any legislation in Parliament for a smooth rule. The other aspect is that the opposition numbers were so superior in parliament, that they would have pushed to impeach him over any flimsy issue.
Mwanawasa was not safe, HE WAS LAME DUCK PRESIDENT. He needed numbers to fortify his presidency. This is why he begun to appoint opposition MPs and leaders into various ministerial positions. This effectively shifted their allegiance on to him. The opposition lost some of their more vibrant intelligent politicians for a ministerial paycheck. They became soft towards him and never ever spoke Ill of their new paymaster. This issue brought a lot of acrimony in the nation because he effectively diluted the opposition.
Mwanawasa's proponents argue that his intention was to bring unity in the nation. The opposition's counter argument was that the president did not do this in good will because he went ahead with the appointments without engaging with the various parties for some form of memorandum of understanding.
Mwanawasa's ill intention were further confirmed by himself when he declared that; he would continue to appoint opposition leaders as ministers until the opposition is "crushed!!!!!".
Aside from all that, by the time he secured victory for his second term his position was firm as president and he had won the hearts of many Zambians through good leadership. A lot of Zambians, believe that our nation would have been very different had he lived to see through his second term. Rest In Peace Mr President. You were one of a kind.
