  • The discussion of what type of beef calf to raise continues to be one we have a lot of interest in, especially after a report by the University of Kansas was published back in May.
According to the April closeout data in this report collected from six large Kansas feed yards, the information showed the cost of gain was $14.47 per CWT higher for heifers than steers and the death loss was 0.52% higher in heifers than steers.
These are significant numbers when it comes to the feed yards’ bottom line. To get a first-hand opinion on this decisions we have Dr. Justin Gleghorn, the Director of Cattle Risk Management & Customer Service for Cactus Feeds Inc. with us today to discuss the performance of dairy crossbred steers verses heifers within his own program.
In this two part webinar we will visit with Dr. Justin Waggoner, Beef Systems Specialist at Kansas State University’s Southwest Area Extension Office and Dr. Justin Gleghorn, the Director of Cattle Risk Management & Customer Service for Cactus Feeds Inc, to bring their expertise to the topic.
In today’s webinar, we visit with Dr. Justin Gleghorn, who will give us a deep dive into what Cactus Feeders sees in their dairy crossbred animals when it comes to steers vs. heifers.
