I had an '85 Conquest for a few months, it was a good car. 0-60 in 10secs may seem slow in this days, but it was fast in the 80s. I like retro reviews. They remind me the good and bad cars from those years
I could only imagine what a modern version of the engine that came in this car would perform like. I mean 2.6 liters makes for a fairly large 4 cylinder engine, especially when you realize that it was turbocharged. It would be awesome to see a newer version of this engine running a DOHC head combined with direct injection as well as having some form of variable valve timing MITEC system added to it. I bet such a modernized version of this engine would easily achieve 300 factory rated crankshaft HP without breaking a sweat right off the showroom floor!
I love the stories my dad tells about how the police would pull him over just to ask what kind of car he was driving when he would drive an 83 Starion he had as a dealer demo.
What a blast from the past. My buddy's mom had a 86' Conquest back in the day and boy was it sharp! My mom drove an AW11 MR2 so we would compare them quite frequently. Those were the days!
My mother bought the very same car in 1984. Dark gray 5 speed Technica package Plymouth Conquest for which she traded in a Toyota Celica for it. I got the car in 1990 and drove it for a couple of years before selling it. It was a great car and never had a single issue with it
Dude, you're gonna be SO sorry you sold it. ALL cars from the 80's and 90's are actually Rising in value.🧐 Especially 2-door cars since no one hardly makes 'em anymore.
I had that exact year and color combo. Came in second in an “unauthorized” road rally in South Carolina in 1985 (396 miles in 4hrs 4min) topping out at 136mph.
Pretty simple fix I did to my '84, adjust the wastegate and bump the 7psi factory boost to 11-13psi then port the giant intake filter box. Makes it just a wee bit faster and a lot more fun. '84 with 112k original miles and still runs great.
The hood was open, and the driver didn't see the guy closing the hood in front of the car. If it was a heavier vehicle, it would have been a lot worse.
I always thought the testers were too close to the cars when on the track. They would launch almost without warning, thereby clipping his toes. Funny there wasn't any comment about this during the review and wasn't edited at all.
Fun fact the Galant Lambda/Challenger/Sapporo luxury-oriented sport coupes were made from 1978 and were replaced by the Starion/Conquest in 1983. In 1991 the Starion/Conquest was replaced by the GTO/Stealth/3000GT
According to wikipedia, in 1991 the Conquest was also succeeded by the Plymouth Laser, Eagle Talon, and the Mitsubishi Eclipse. GOD the Laser, Talon, and Conquest were Beautiful cars!!!!!
I had a friend that had an 87 Chrysler Conquest that was intercooled, rated 175hp. A 5 speed. It was the same 2.6. While it ran pretty good, it's electronic dash never worked right from day 1 and the 2.6 leaked like a sieve. Quick car, nimble, good brakes. We didn't care about mileage back then..
Another car I wanted in the worst way back in the day!!!!! I'd love to see the '83 Starion road test. Also, the tests of the Colt GTS & Vista that were parked on the track at 4:19.
Hell it was cool and modern looking, neat digital dash, pretty fast for it's time. My neighborhood back then was littered with 60's and 70's rust buckets so this would've got mad respect (and most likely stolen). Nothing wrong with liking this car back then.
I like the digital readout cluster....it looked easy to read, but some of the cars tested on Motorweek were hard to read, when wearing the sunglasses with the cars with digital readout.
The Conquest is the only Mitsubishi-built car that has been sold through Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler in the United States under the same name. It's also the only car that I know of that had rear wheel antilock brakes available.
@Ultra CNC but why are you fighting so hard to say that? People wouldn't even get shocked at it, they would just feel depressed that you still say the frase "Oriental"
I had that exact same car except mine had a leather interior and a woman's voice told you if your door was ajar or if you left your lights on. It seemed faster then my 2016 Camry but according to their test it wasn't. I remember it pushing you into the seat when the turbo kicked in.
remember that in 1984 that was fairly quick. even ferraris and lambos of the era barely broke the 5 second mark. modern day family sedans would beat old exotic cars to 60mph
Listening to the beginning explanation of how the Conquest came from the Starion I was just sitting here like "Oh god no... this has got to be a mistake... Chrysler why?!?!"
I street raced an '87 Mustang back in those days. Starion/ Conquest were fodder. Your main competition was tweaked Grand Nationals and other stangs with an occasional tweaked Omni GLH giving you a good run. IROC's and TransAms were slugs. Fat and heavy. Vets were too. The king of the 1980's streets was the Ford Mustang! The Buick GN was a close second. I occasionally got in a tangle with some exotics that should have handed my ass to me, but the drivers were the hold back. Money can buy fast, but it wont make you faster if you ain't got the skillz.
10.1 to 60mph. And that was considered fast back then. Today, 6 seconds to 60mph can be had by more full size trucks and SUV’s than sedans and smaller cars
I find it odd it does the 1/4 mile is .1 second more than my Ford Escape but does 0-60 in almost two seconds more. Maybe there was something wrong with this car.
I get what you're saying but I'd drop in a modded EVO drive train. The 4 cyl would probably fit better. But yeah, white with blue stripes would be great.
I`d have to question that 0-60 time. I drove one and it was much faster than that. Were they driving an automatic? Did they not know how to spool up a turbo?
