@Magnetron33 I would guess a little later, probably around 1966 - 67, when he would have been pushing 80. His health wasn't good, but he had spirit, and didn't want to quit working.
Blimey! This guy is impossible not to like! (And what an absolutely cool concept for a TV commercial! Sold! And I hate coffee, but hey, it's Boris Karloff giving it to you!)
You are right! Impossible not to like. I first saw him late on a January Friday night in 1964, during a Shock Theater broadcast of The Bride Of Frankenstein. Being only five and a half years old, I was unable to stay awake for very long after my parents woke me---I can remember only the scene in the blind man' hut, and the scene where they chain the monster into a chair in a cellar of some prison. But, in my childish way, I saw through the make-up to the human being underneath it. Later, although I would find Lon Chaney's and Bela Lugosi's performances as the Monster somewhat scary (that smile of Lugosi's, near the climax of Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man chills me to this day), I never feared Karloff's Monster. As I grew, especially in adolescence. I was made---by my peers and classmates---to feel different, through no fault of my own. Karloff's Monster, and, later, knowledge of Mary Shelley's intentions in writing the novel, helped me get through---no, strike that and put in SURVIVE---that difficult time.

@@J-Called Sorry it is a nice anecdote you wrote but one, sadly, must grow up and let go of childhood fantasies. Bela Lugosi was the complete opposite of what I expected him to be, the opposite of what he was portrayed as being. Agree. He'll always be a big fave to me. If you haven't seen him in "The Body Snatcher" (1945) then I highly suggest you seek it out. Oscar caliber performance.
Butter Nut coffee is still available. I tried it and it is good. The instant is labeled espresso. It is darker than other instant coffees, which is good because we older folks sometimes have a weakened sense of taste. The Butter Nut instant has a bolder taste, so I have found my new coffee.
Butternut did several of these "act-along" commercials with such as Pat O'Brien, Joe E. Brown, Joan Blondell, and others. Cesar Romero also did one of these, about the time that the Batman T.V. series (in which he played "Joker") was on the air. Romero played a wealthy man on a yacht who had everything he wanted, and who happened to like Butternut coffee. The end of the commercial was Romero being unhappy about not being able to buy Hawaii. To the viewer line "Don't be bitter," his tongue-in-cheek reply was: "I'm like Butternut coffee. I'm rich, but never bitter." I can't find a video of this commercial on UA-cam.
😉My distant cousin (real name, William Pratt, from my maternal grandmother's family). Yes, I know about the familial resemblance -- especially with Frankenstein's monster and the Mummy.
I know that Stan Freberg was doing radio ads for Butter-Nut in the late '50s, including his classic spoof of "Oklahoma" ("Omaha!"). I would wonder if Freberg played a hand in this TV ad with Boris Karloff?
I think Boris was a bit of a trailer blazer when it comes to celebrities appearing in advents. This was a long time before Orson Welles did his sherry and Karlsberg adverts.
If I watched that when it first aired, Butter-Nut coffee would still be around because its the only brand I'd drink! Hilarious ad! The brand's can say "specially mellowed". Probably some smooth stuff!
Two of the greatest movie villains were Boris Karloff and Margaret Hamilton (The Wicked Witch of the West, "The Wizard of Oz"), yet they were real sweethearts in real life!
Yes, indeed. Most of the screen's great villians (Boris, Margaret, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Edward G. Robinson, Dan Duryea, etc) were known as quiet, kind & gentle people offscreen.
Maybe over in England, but since the American population are mostly coffee drinkers, I think that's why he did this TV ad in the 60s. Since he grew up over there, I'm pretty sure he drank tea, not coffee. But who knows.....
Offshoreorganbuilder You mean what do I mean? Well, he's a little too quirky, with that slightly campe voice. Don't get me wrong I like characters, and he seemed intelligent. But, look at the kinky stuff he used to film. That's just horror... right. In fact he said Frankenstein wasn't even horror, and that it was just a sad but thoughtful tale (lol). There's a strong possibility. Stan Freberg & his production company were involved with a LOT of TV commercials in the 60s.

perverse

adjective
showing a deliberate and obstinate desire to behave in a way that is unreasonable or unacceptable.
"Kate's perverse decision not to cooperate held good"
synonyms: awkward, contrary, difficult, unreasonable, uncooperative, unhelpful, obstructive, disobliging, unaccommodating, troublesome, tiresome, annoying, vexatious, obstreperous, disobedient, unmanageable, uncontrollable, recalcitrant, refractory, rebellious;
