I've been twice...my dad used to go when he was stationed at Fort Harrison and still keeps the keys to his safe on his Speedway keychain. What I like most about it is that the other fans are so intensely friendly. Even though the Speedway is so large, there is no chance of someone trying to elbow you out of the way to get in before you...they'd rather have a conversation, and some of the more interesting conversations I've had have been with random race fans in the motel the night before. It is what it is, but it's an all-American experience everyone should try to enjoy at least once...back home again in Indiana, of course.
I hope to get back soon and that it be under some type of media capacity. I bumped into an individual that had got 40 years in. It's great to hear of people getting the first in, over a decade, and for decades.
Thank you for taking the time to include us in your weekend I've been to the Indy 500 three times and my most vivid memory is walking across the parking lot at White Castle and it was completely White from boxes of hamburgers that were thrown on the ground LOL
So 2021 race I was a military member of the truck parade. Incredibly thankful for the opportunity to ride along the track. I have a video. “Back Home Again in Indiana” is a song we grew up singing in grade school. I’ve been going to this race as a kid. And even if we weren’t able to be there in person, we would watch it or listen to it while we camped on Memorial Day. I love being from Indiana and having all this as a Hoosier!
Lol. Thought your seat looked near to ours, if you listen at 6:52 you can hear someone say "thanks for disrespecting...", those were some of the many kind words of one of the what seemed like 20 lovely individuals that harassed my father, my girlfriend and I for not standing during the memorial day proceedings, including having beer cans thrown at us (to anyone reading, we did stand for the anthem). Once I made them aware that my dad and I are British it calmed them down. We made amends to an extent and enjoyed the race, being that close I'm sure you overheard the drama first-hand. Oh well, still enjoyed it. Was a bucket list experience of mine.
I was surprised that Indianapolis honors the drivers racing the yearly Indy500 by naming corners with their names 👍🤙👏👏👏👏 14:47 Canapino corner!!! in 2023 Thanks for the video👍🤙👏 wish you can make it to Indy500 many times. Cheers from 🇦🇷Argentina 🏎🇦🇷🏎🤣
Hopefully I will get back. Want to work it eventually but I do have my other obligations at the moment that's not a bad gig in its own right. ua-cam.com/video/SYpIWJ08v9A/v-deo.html
I was legitimately the same row as you, just all the way down to your right against the end fence of the stands!!! Im glad you had fun! This year will be my 25th consecutive year going!
I am happy you enjoyed your experience. Thanks for sharing it. I watched the 1970 race from the old Grandstand D which was about where you were. That was my sixth 500. I was a spectator at the next two before covering the race as a sportswriter for three years then 21 years as a photographer, then after staying away for five years, I covered three more as a photographer. After that I was a spectator at three or four more 500s wrapped around three years working on the Safety Patrol. I saw, and recorded a lot during all those years, and experienced all kinds of weather. I still closely fallow INDYCAR through the whole season, and the 500 very closely, but only from afar now.
Fantastic video, great coverage! Your video inspired me to go this year with my wife to the 108th, I have never been so I am looking forward to it, thank you so much for sharing your experience, great job!
Glad you found this and it has inspired you to go! If I didn't have a race scheduled to cover in Iowa that weekend I'd go again if not work it from a photography standpoint.
The racing is at it's best in the series. Old timer at this track, haven't missed a race since 75, there are alot of us. Tell everyone you know about it, because it is The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
Thanks for watching! Very cool that it was your first 500 too. I certainly plan on going back. Hopefully under some type of media capacity. Where did you sit?
@@MondayMorningRacer We were six rows up right in front of Dixon's pit at the end of Pit Row, not a bad seat but could have been a bit higher to see better down the front straight ... those seats you had were pretty good it looked like ..
Thanks for watching. Yeah, that second fly-over was cool and more akin to an actual Thunderbirds maneuver. There was slightly a third fly-over as well that I didn't get. They formed up and skirted right over turn 2 as cars began to roll. One other pre-race event I didn't catch that I wish I had is the rebellious balloon release by someone on property near the speedway - MERICA'!
Hi Lee thank you for your reply, also thoroughly enjoyed the last power hour , I have been watching since the very first episode and I feel this is the best one yet keep up the great work!!
Wow! Cool! The wife and I are heading out on Friday for our first Indy 500! Can’t wait has always been on my bucket list! Any tips for first timers Lee?
Sorry for not giving any tips. I'm on the road a lot these days (not a complaint) and find it more challenging to answer questions. How was your first Indy 500!?
Thanks for watching! Hmmm, I don't know the price of the museum on race day. I think it's $25 on a normal day. Been to it several times apart from the race. It is currently under major reconstruction to improve the museum. www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/news-multimedia/news/2023/07/11/07-11-Museum-Campaign
16:58 After the race, you could acess this area? and the infield beside tha Pagoda, too? how can we do it? i'm planning to go to 2023 Indy500.. Regards from Brazil.
Before and after the race a lot of these areas are open to fans. During the race you'd need extra credentials. The garage access pass is an extra ticket that was $11. I'm not sure of pre-race access but there is post race access. It's as simple as walk under the tunnel and enjoy.
It sounds like it. And MMR's video was fantastic. I normally don't say this, but I'd have actually appreciated MORE narration during the video (kind of like you did on your track tour MnB). Hope to see you both there in a few months!
The biggest rookie mistake that I saw was.......sitting in the stands instead of the infield..... There is nothing better than Indy's infield.....It's what makes it the Greatest Spectacle in Racing....
It's not a "mistake" to enjoy a race however you want. Experiencing the infield for another 500 is just something to look forward too. Anyways, after spectating the next goal is to work it.
It's all of it. It's something TV can't fully capture. Similar to NHRA Camping World Drag racing, the TV just doesn't do it justice. So it is with the Indy 500, the energy of all those fans and the emotions around nostalgia and memorial is clearly felt all the while you watch a high stakes, high speed race with ever changing strategies. It has to be experienced.
@@jessallen7756 where do people party now? It seems like the Coca Cola lot was where I remember it getting crazy, but things have been toned down lately
