First of all, thank you for this video. Second of all - forgive me if there is some gramatical & typing mistakes, clearly english is not my first language. As owner of American Vintage II 1961 olympic white Fender Stratocaster, I have to say that I had exactly the same issue with neck pocket and crooked neck like yourself. Also I have seen a lot of videos in which people were complaining about the same issue. Also, I have to admit, that from what I hear in this video, I like more how does the Fender American Original sounds like. It has that almost pre CBS - bell like deeper tone than american vintage II ... Thank you and God bless you !

2:14 mine had that too, you don't have to take the neck off. just loosen the screws very little, move in place, and tighten screws while maintaining pressure/position.
I sold the AO60. Mainly for cosmetic reasons (clay dots and spaghetti logo), but I do love the neck on the AVII61.

I like the 7.25 radius also. My guitar is one of the earlier Road Work 50s and I LIKE the 7.25 radius with the soft V. Has the nice dark amber tint also. Kinda liking the looks of the AVii 61 slab though...

I had the exact misaligned neck issue on my Vintage ii, only my high E was even farther off the fretboard. Same exact guitar, same color and everything. My hypothesis, since I got it from Sweetwater and could see the neck was seated fine in the photos, is that since they come in a vintage case, it must have shipped handle-down. Have a look, and you'll see there's no support for the bass-side cutaway bout if it's facing down in a truck. So technically, I don't think that's a QC issue -- but just when we're talking vintage cases. It's just a theory, but if I look at the neck support pad bevel in the case, it's been smashed leftward a bit by the stress. Have a look and let me know if your case shows the same stresses, and I'll bet that's what went wrong.

    • @NickHandleyCreative
      @NickHandleyCreative  6 місяців тому +1

Real talk - my case is buried and mixed in with a bunch of other cases in my garage, so I don’t have the will to go dig it out, but I will say that I had the same thing happen with a used Strat I got on reverb. The pictures specifically showed a tight neck pocket, but when the guitar arrived the high E string was hanging off the board and there was a huge gap in the neck pocket. I blame shipping

You don't have to take the neck off to adjust it in the neck pocket, just loosen the screws a few turns and gently push it in place. Not sure why you'd want to take the entire neck off. It can even be done while the strings are at full tension.

The American Vintage II definitely has a more aggressive tone that I think would be suitable for more styles of music. 1. Fiesta red kills! End of contest!
    2. Why would I want a warmer sound I have a tone knob, you can’t add back bite if it’s warm to start with.
    3. I prefer a skinny neck over a fat neck
    4. 9.5” feels better to me. So egg shell pink for the sun here.
    5. Vintage 2 finger board I think looks a little darker but I could be wrong.
Overall I think you kept the nicer guitar. I’m sure you’re thrilled either way!

I just went to a store to try it out, and it had 3 issues: 1st, the E string kept choking from the 12th fret when bending it, 2nd the tip of the pickup switch kept falling, which never happened with my previous strata and 3rd, I found the rosewood to be pale (though it was very dry, so maybe it was because of that)
I would like to know where are your thoughts on this and if you had any of these issues? Thanks

Loving the video's you are putting out Nick. Must admit, I have spent a lot of time looking at the Custom Shop options, but the AVII 1961 Start, has all the spec's I'm after (except, maybe different Fret's). Anyway, after watching your video's and several other youtuber's covering the AVII '61 Start, I have decided to give it a go, and have one on it's way (of course in Fiesta Red). My concern was the -'ve comments I have seen about QC, but I can get the AVII at less then half the cost of a CS in Australia, so nothing a bit of work cannot solve. Anyway, keep up the awesome content.

      Ahh man, thank you!!
About your AVii…. I wouldn’t worry about it. In my humble opinion 99% of all the internet noise about the QC issues is just that… Noise. I have 3 AVii’s with a fourth on the way, and the only real QC item I’ve noticed was the misalignment of the neck on the 61, but that was so, so minor, and I’m pretty sure the one I got was a returned floor model, so who knows what happened to that thing before it came to me. I think I’ve had maybe 2 or 3 guitars in my entire life be perfect right out of the box. Congratulations on the 61’ !! If you use the Trem arm the Original stays in tune and that fatter neck resonates with the body perfectly. In any case we all know "You only miss them when they've gone" and they don't even make those "Originals" anymore. I bet they become sought after just for the neck. Awesome viddy, you basically had 2 many Guitars and that can happen to all Guitar players. Great synopsis. Yeah I love the AO neck. I’ll grab another some day. Lately I’ve been on a quest to collect all the strats in the AVi and ii line, so I think that was part of the reason for keeping the 61.’ Like you, way back in my 20’s when I played for a living, my guitar (American standard strat) fell out of the back of my pickup and I was too poor to buy another nice one so I finished out my career with a hw1 strat that was donated to me. Never liked it. Now I’m grabbing all the stuff I wanted back then. The irony being that I only play in the bedroom now 😆

@@NickHandleyCreative I went to a local shop last week that’s a custom shop dealer that ordered a run of 1962 vintage Stratocasters, Telecasters, Esquires, Jazzmaster and Jaguars for the store 65th anniversary in heavy relic vintage white and sapphire blue. So I went to try out a Jazzmaster for fun and was digging the vintage white one. Then he told me that they had a Fiesta Red one in the storeroom that wasn’t on the website, so of course I said I wanted to check it out. For some reason it was the only one of the three with the roasted maple neck and ebony fretboard, and it also clearly had a different shaped neck that fit my hand like a glove. So I bought it within minutes and had the shop check the setup and put on new strings. It’s a joy to play. Love your Stratocaster!!!

I feel completely the opposite. I felt like my American original had more of the custom feel to it. Pinning the strings was easier. I do have a couple of guitars with 7 1/4 inch but there’s just something about the American originals Mojo for me.

  • @reverb508

The American Original series was really special. I love most things about vintage Fenders, but the small frets are a no-go. I can live with the 7.5" radius if it has bigger frets, but man is it awkward for me to play small frets on a vintage radius fretboard. I have a 57 AVRI Strat from 2012 and I love it to death, but man, playing that thing after my Gibsons is ROUGH. Probably gonna get it refretted soon with medium jumbo or 6105 fret wire.

  • @mmatthewias280

Everybody on here talking about radius, for me fret size has always been a bigger issue. If you give me any guitar with 6105 (narrow tall) frets I’m just gonna give it back to you. Medium jumbo is my favorite but Fender is using them less and less. I can “get along” with any except the 6105s, feel like railroad tie/speed bumps moving around the neck. Why they used the CBS transition logo on AO 60s is just a bone headed and out of touch move from Fender for people who want “vintage style” strats.

I’d have to say keep both. Return the AO and put it on a gear card, financing it for 24 months. And then you could keep both without too much of a hit. I think the AO is closer to a custom shop spec and is also essentially a John Mayer signature spec other than big dippers pickups. Same neck profile, vintage spec, 9.5 radius. 7.25 always made more sense on a fender guitar to me. Like, for a gibson, you get a wider (i know its flatter technically but it feels wider at the same time) radius but also shorter overall distance, then for fender you get a skinny-er radius at the cost of a longer fretboard so you have to stretch more.
