On Catalina Island, there is a buffalo population because of a western that was being shot there, and they brought buffalo in for the film. When they wrapped up, they left the buffalo on there, and they still live there to this day!
Enjoyed this one! A couple more to consider: San Juan Islands (WA) Alexander Archipelago (AK) Texas Barrier Islands (TX) Sea Islands (FL, SC, GA) Delmarva Barrier Islands (VA, MD, DE) New York City & Long Island (NY) Thimble Islands (CT) Narragansett Bay Islands (RI) Boston Harbor Islands (MA) Islands of Door County (WI) Islands of Moosehead Lake (ME) Islands of Voyageurs National Park (MN) Mariana Islands (Guam, Northern Mariana Islands) Samoa Islands (American Samoa) Virgin Islands (US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico)
I live in the 1000 Island region of NY. In order for something to be called an island, it must support two trees. One tree makes it a shoal and no trees makes it a rock. The 1000 Islands were formed after the last Ice Age, when torrents of melt water washed away the soft limestone & left granite fingers sticking up. That's why the river depth goes from 10 feet to 200 feet in the space of 5 feet.
@@BS-vx8dgAccording to Google (so it must be true): Is it true that to be officially termed an “island,” a land mass requires at least three trees? No, there is no such criterion for defining an island.
@@BS-vx8dg As far as I know it is a local definition. With about 1800 islands, many privately owned, I'm sure the tax man got involved. I suspect the tax rate for an island is higher than that of a rock.
Kyle after 6 years of watching your channel, I'm amazed you can still introduce me to areas of the US I'd never heard of. The Farralon Islands, Gateway Rec Area in NY, and the navy-owned islands within the channel islands area were all new to me. Really cool stuff. Thanks for expanding my world!
I'm very familiar with Sandy Hook in the New Jersey section of Gateway National Recreation Area, but I had no idea that there are also sections in NYC (Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island).
My first thought when I saw the title of this video was the Apostle Islands. I have a few memories as a kid going over on the ferry to visit Madeline Island and even camping at Big Bay State Park. It's quite a hike from home, but well worth it.
My favorite archipelago, not mentioned in this video, is the San Juan Islands located just north of the Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca in northwest Washington state.
He focused on Vashon, a southern island of the San Juan chain, and unfortunately focused on the unfounded unvaccinated propaganda about the island. It’s pretty pathetic the sway of the media has on spreading BS information, I was pretty disappointed to hear him talk about it.
Dutch Harbor and Unalaska hold a special place in my heart. My mom's family moved there in the early 90s, with my grandpa and his brother becoming the head engineers at Alyeska seafoods, which specialized in King Crab. Always fun to see a place that I'm related to in your videos
Dry Tortugas is an amazing NP. It's such an adventure. I had my doubts of an old fort being a NP but once we went there, I understood why it's a NP. OBX are so fun! The wild horses of Corolla are amazing!
The Jersey shore islands are a surprising exclusion. The southern shore towns - Wildwood, Atlantic City, Ocean City, Avalon, Surf City, and Seaside Heights - are all a part of the barrier islands of New Jersey.
There are multiple chains of barrier islands along the Jersey Shore that boast many famous tourist attractions like Seaside Heights, Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, Ocean City, the Wildwoods and Cape May, and a surprising number of year-round residents who love that awesome shore lifestyle (like me) but are still within driving distance of major cities and population centers along the I-95 corridor from D.C. to NYC. I enjoyed learning about the places on your list and maybe in the next one you could include these great spots.
Was hoping to see my state's Barrier Islands (Texas), but that's okay. Padre Island is actually the longest barrier island in the world, so I thought that might be a reason for you to include it and the others.
Fascinating, thank you! I live close to the islands off of SB & Ventura, Ca. Very beautiful! To travel to Avalon you take a boat from San Pedro which glides across the water very fast !
Very interesting video. In Jamaica Bay in New York, I believe Broad Channel Island is the largest one, and it contains the small community of Broad channel, which has a volunteer fire company, and 2 or 3 churches. But the subway goes there, on its way to the Rockaways. Anyway, we also have our chain of barrier islands in New Jersey. One of them is completely wild. That is Island Beach State Park.
You missed a really cool thing about Gateway National Rec Area... it has a subway station!!! The A-line. You can take a single train from Times Square to Gateway National Rec
interesting topic! i love learning about islands as they are usually unique pockets of geography or culture, making them very diverse and fun to hear about
Kyle...thank you for being as active as you are..I check often and excited to see "what's next"...did you see The N.Lights...? Me? No...not in Seaford (York County) Va...BeWell !!!
I got to tour the Apostle Island back in 2004 - like you say, the boat tour does not stop. When I checked in and the person behind the desk noted when I made my reservation [Jan - this was May] she couldn't believe how early it was made. When I saw that the tour group I was with was not going to do this tour - I signed up immediately [avoiding space limitations]. I would do it again. I want to see Thousand Islands someday. Still on my wish list. I really enjoyed this video - I'm not too familiar with the 'off the west coast islands as I am with the SE US islands. Hawai`i is a favorite spot to visit. Too bad that you have to fly there.
Kyle, now that's a colorful "Aloha" shirt. Fits nicely with the subject.😀 Not for your info, obviously, but for those watching: the islands to the NW of the 8 main Hawaiian islands are called Papahānaumokuākea = pa-pa-hah-now-moe-coo-ah-KAY-ah (the name given to the Marine National Monument and World Heritage Site, also known as the NW Hawaiian Islands, established in 2006, extending 1368mi./2201km. west of Kauai, and entirely uninhabited. Your comments about Attu and a few other western Aleutian islands are why AK is the westernmost, easternmost and northernmost of our states.
Long Beach Island-Jones Beach Island-Captree Island and of course, Fire Island, all off the south shore of Long Island. Was well known for its beaches and fishing, but unfortunately has gained notoriety as a killing ground for a recently caught serial killer 😮. Great video as usual!
I have a video suggestion I'd love to see. Based on your experience and knowledge, what are some of the best smelling cities, towns, and/or regions, and what are the worst. May sound silly to some at first, but different places do have very different smells based on climate, weather, and industry. Like when I was driving through Gilroy south of San Jose I noticed it delightfully smelled like garlic outside. Meanwhile, driving through Central California in Visalia where I live, the smell of the cows is horrendous. I like places that smell nice, so maybe you can suggest some places to visit? Maybe some suggest times of year or events that make them better aswell. Hope you do it, I appreciate you and what you do!
Was stationed on the USS Dewert and sailed through the Saint Lawrence and the Great Lakes to commemorate the war of 1812. The 1000 islands area was mind blowing! Saw some beautiful small islands and structures. Needless to say, a warship in the area got a lot of attention from people boating in the area.
As someone from NYC you really did Jamaica Bay up! I would never swim at any of those beaches, and most of them are covered in plastic garbage that people dump in the ocean.
Been there often since a NC resident. . Southern portion is good but has been overexposed so too many tourist now during peak seasons. NC population has exploded so people crawling everywhere. I’ll spend my summer vacations on an island in the 1000 Islands. Just go to Outer Banks if surf is good.
As an upstate New Yorker, the thousand islands are definitely a hidden gem of the State. I love going up to see Boldt Castle and take an Uncle Sam boat tour up there every summer.
The Hawaiian Islands were produced by a continental movement over a thermal/volcanic hotspot. If you look just south of the Big Island, you can see an underwater volcano....the next Hawaiian Island.
"A marine sanctuary" sounds like a place aging jarheads go to when they get old. It's either there or that farm your dad said he took your childhood dog to.
I have no idea what I'm about to watch, other than it'll be another GK video of excellence. But I'm just putting in here before I watch that I would like to see a *ranking* of US island chains, and that the Aleutians should be on the top of that list. *EDIT* Yeah! I knew you wouldn't let me down. BTW, the name of the people "Aleut", is actually pronounced with _three_ syllables: AL-ee-OOT.
Dutch harbor is where every ship from deadliest catch unloads or loads up on gear. It’s a rough place to be as its entire existence relies heavily on the fishing industry.
8:30 I'm sorry but those hideous wind turbines are a blight on a beautiful landscape. And aren't even very efficient compared to their cost and upkeep.
Sick of all these big chains. Please shop at small independently owned islands

Great info, Joseph. Is that tree-based definition particular to the 1000 Island Chain, or is it recognized by geographers world wide?

I'm glad you are able to learn about new places. There are so many places that haven't been discussed much.
Another great video, Kyle...please make it up to Washington state someday. Both sides, east AND west.
I'm very familiar with Sandy Hook in the New Jersey section of Gateway National Recreation Area, but I had no idea that there are also sections in NYC (Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island).
Very interesting and well done. On you next video regarding islands, perhaps add the San Juan Islands in Washington State.

I lived on two of these island chains. Grew up in Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa, then lived in the Florida Keys after college.
Great video, sir. How appropriate during this video I was eating a salad with Thousand Island dressing :)
6:23 It's incredibly rare for me to see my tiny town of Shiloh NC make an appearance online!
My favorite archipelago, not mentioned in this video, is the San Juan Islands located just north of the Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca in northwest Washington state.
Same
Surprised these were not mentioned. But as Kyle hinted, he may have to revisit the topic. I sure hope he does.
Location of the Pig War of 1859 (to be distinguished from all the other Pig Wars).

This channel has some amazingly unique content. Thanks for the hard work, Kyle!

Apostle Islands, WI is a great place to visit, especially in the winter with the ice caves that develop
Thanks for sharing the Channel Islands.
