China doesn't do anything small. I mean the crane is massive for sure, but look at the size of that distillation column. This is obviously a brand new refinery being built, from scratch. And it looks like it'll be one of the biggest in the world if the unit at the start of it has a distillation column this size.

This is an impressive crane and lift, but the thing is that the heavier and taller you go to lift things, the more critical enen the smallest things can become. If you don't get all of them correct, then disaster is just there waiting to happen. There is little room for error and that is one thing humans are good at.

Such a common statement for a westerner... at this point China doesn't need to "steal" designs for anything, certainly not a crane. China has produced some of the largest cranes in the world, and they do it using their own engineers. China has some of the very best technical universities and engineers anywhere in the world, and certainly a far higher standard of education than the U.S.
If China participated in OECD they would be far ahead on Reading and Maths than any of the top 40 ranked OECD countries (note the United States is not in the top 40). Here is the OECD's own study on the Chinese Education system in comparison to OECD countries. www.oecd.org/pisa/pisa-2015-china.htm
Shanghai-China: Reading 556 Math 600 Science 575; number 1 OECD ranked country South Korean: Reading 539 Math 546 Science 554
      www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2010/dec/07/world-education-rankings-maths-science-reading
With that sort of level of education, the country can only excel. I think its obvious that all countries "steal" from each other, its just easy for western news to claim theft as the reason for China's success, when in fact its really things like education, national pride, and other factors that contribute to their incredible development and economic growth.
