    Being gentle with a drag line has got to take some serious skill and patience

    I had the opportunity in the past few days to do a walk through of 1 of 2 marion draglines operated by Fisher Mining in English Center, PA, very impressive. I am a construction worker in the paving field and I must say these machines make the equipment I work with look like tonka toys.

    That bloke has been operating dragline for 25 years. He is one of the company's top paid workers and highest coal producer with his machine. From my camera angle you really can't see what he's into. He knows what he's doing

    I was a drag line operator and he is cutting in on a new cut he getting that hard stuff out the the way to protect his chains and drag cable . That is hard until you get cut in.

    I grew up in a phosphate mining town in Florida. Growing up, it's was normal to see these on a daily basis. The mines have since moved further south but we still get to see these while driving to the beach. My father recently retired from Mosaic ( the mining company)

    It's pretty impressive to see how a skilled operator works one of these machines, because they're not real easy to learn how to dig with.

    Never seen the back of a dragline bucket used as a dozer before. Around here usually there is a small dozer that runs around and "cleans up" for the larger dragline.

    Nice video. How often to they have to change the teeth on the bucket? Looks like some tough digging.

    Amazing watching this operate, that cable to the bucket is 12in across. and brutal. Looks like a Hotel all lit up at night there so big. Cuts through the mountains and makes a valley that looks natural when done.

    Love it as can tell that operator IS experienced! He is doing what we call "cleaning his front porch" as those rocks he's working on eliminating can shred that drag rope in no time once he starts going deep! ? is will he "walk" up closer for a better view once he starts digging deep?

  • @justforever96
    @justforever96 12 років тому +3

    Like the other guy said, he's cleaning out the sharp rocks and whatnot from the top of the bank, so he won't shred his ropes when he goes to start digging deeper. Makes sense to me.

    @hfdzl -have to edit- we cut back the drag rope @ 120 hrs. It will break at the crowsfoot if not cut back.

    Thanks. It is hard digging. Teeth don't have to be changed very often, wear plates do.

    That thing sounds so cool. I do have one question, If you’re sitting and watching it can you feel the ground move when it moves?

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  7 років тому

      Not really because its slides when it moves. Thanks!

    We have a Lima 2400- w/8yd Hendrix bucket. I have to run and maintain. curious to as how often do you change the drag rope/s? I have found with our machine the rope should be changed out at about 120hrs. Just before it breaks the rope sounds like someone crinkling plastic bags- it is ready. Nice job- you are smooth. I like what I do- wouldn't trade for anything. HF

    @hfdzl Nice, 2400 is a rough and tough machine. I'm not sure how often they change ropes

    Does anyone know how these compare to a bucket wheel excevator? They both seem to do the same job but I've never seen a dragline in Europe and I'm not sure if there are wheels in the US. What are the advantages and disadvantages? Does it come down to the style of mining, soil structure, seam structure etc?

      There's a dragline at St Aidans in Leeds, West Yorkshire. UK. It's a Bucyrus Erie. Hasn't moved since 1999. It's not too far from where I live. Supposedly the largest preserved one in Western Europe (according to Wikipedia)? They were wanting to hold open days at one point and get it moving but I heard thieves took all the copper out of the motors so that was the end of that idea. It's still there and looks in decent condition on the outside when I went to see it earlier this year. Couldn't tell you about the advantages/disadvantages from bucket wheel excavators though.

      The depth. With these machines, like that one right there can easily dig 70-80 feet deep. Plus on top of that, if you want to go that deep, there’s a method you need to follow that you won’t be able to do with the excavator
