    GREAT video. And you're darn right about the way this hobby has you upgrading tanks and filters! Just a few months ago, I was watching your videos because I had just bought a Fluval 307 for my 55gal (despite having tanks my whole life, that was my first canister filter). Now, I just bought a secondhand 125gal and it came with an FX6 that is only a year old (both of which I never dreamed I'd be able to afford, but the deal of a lifetime popped up and I jumped on it). Well, here I am again watching your videos about the FX6! Very informative and very engaging. You can really tell how much you care about this hobby and sharing the knowledge you've learned over the years. I will be going through your FX6 videos for the next few days learning everything I can about this beast of a filter, haha. Thank you so much for doing these videos.

    Great video for a refresher course, the only thing I'd comment on is fluval is so cheap you need 3 times as many biorings than they supply with a new filter!!!! You would think they would know that and want the best start for the beginner!

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 роки тому +1

      I hear you. But fluval doesnt know how many fish you have in your tank, or your bio-load. They assume a lightly stocked tank, which the included media would be sufficient for. But I do wish they would just send more! lol

    With the fx6 you could use a small additional canister that you could attach in the external flow pipe and fill that with chemical. That way the main canister would only be mechanical and biological. If unsure watch pond guru on setting up filters properly.

    Thank you so much for your videos… they help so much. I’m relatively new as an Aquarium owner and am looking to upgrade from my 5 gal to a 10 gal. I have a basic HOB currently. I have a coarse sponge first, then some Seachem bio filter rocks in bags next and then a fine filter for polishing the water. I recently got some ceramic rings and love the look of them. They are too big for my current filter. Is it okay to add them to my tank bottom on top of my gravel to promote more beneficial bacteria and just look cool? If I add some ceramic rings to the bottom of my tank, when cleaning my tank, should I just swish in my siphoned tank water after vacuuming my gravel? Thanks so very much for your great content! Cheers, Dottie

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 роки тому

      You can add them to the bottom if you think they look cool. They will grow some beneficial bacteria on them as well but not as much as if they were in your filter. But thats ok because you've still got your filter doing that job. Dont worry about disturbing them when you vacuum because like I said the majority of your BB will be in the filter 😊

    Hey Kevin. I'm trying to help my friend with her new 10 gallon tank . I told her to get a 30 gallon hang on the back filter by Aqua clear . The problem is she didn't let her tank cycle she put Gold fish in thinking it was safe and she lost all of them. Because of the ammonia spike. There are NO FISH IN THE TANK.
    So we have change the rock and started over . Its been a week and still have building ammonia but it changing over to nitrite and nitrate. The first time nitrate was 40 ppm. We did a small water change about 3 gallons. We waited a week and ammonia went back up to 8.0 again . I put in prime and stitabily like you said on one of your video. We are dosing the tank everyday. The nitrite was 1.0 ppm. The nitrate was 80 to 160 ppm.
    So we did a water change maybe 4 Gallons .
    I don't understand why it's take so long to finish the cycle. I fell like I don't know what I'm doing wrong with her tank . HELP.

    Hey Kev, great videos my man!!
    Need your input on this one. I have a 45 bow front that has been established for some time now and I’m now about to start up my 100 gal and will be running the FX6. I wanted to ramp up the cycle process and I thought about buying some nylon bags and filling them up with my ceramic rings and tossing them in my 45 bow front to start the beneficial bacteria process. What are your thoughts on it? I would have to just dump them in my tanks as there’s no more space in my HOB or my 206. Thanks brother!

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 роки тому +1

      Yup, that would work. You obviously wont get as much BB on them as if they were in your filter. But will definitely get some. And they'll help in getting your new tank cycled quickly when you pop them into the filter for that tank. 👍

    why chemical media goes last?

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 роки тому +1

      Chemical media removes dissolved organics in your water. It can also remove some ammonia and nitrite. Your biomedia needs ammonia and nitrite so that bacteria can begin to feed on it and grow. So normally you don’t want chemical media to remove that before reaching your bio media…In an FX6 though it’s ok, because you would most likely have so much ammonia and nitrite that a lot of it would still get passed the chemical media and make it to your bio media. That and there’s also so much surface area in the sponges for BB to grow on before it hits the chemical….great question…I hope that makes sense.
