When i played Guild Wars 2 the first time, I eventually dragged my tiny sylvari all the way through to Ascalon. Just to see what happened... to see how it looked now. And this song came on. And i stood in front of the shambles of the castle i knew from the GW1 base game... and that song hit hard.
Music like this is ageless. Jeremy is one of the best composer of all time, most of his music touches a deep part of my heart like few things is life do
best track of the game . beautiful. shivering down my spine. love the time signature 5/8 a lot of shifting going on in the middle i think. one of the most interesting pieces of the game :D !
You know whats bad about Jeremy's compositions? That people bother me if im ok, while I cry listening to this on earphones, coz music is so god damn beautifull...
I sadly wasn't so fortunate to play the first Guild Wars Game when it came out. Yeah, I do catch up now in 2020 and play the first Game. But I'm having such a Fomo(Fear of missing out)-Moment when I play them, because I might never have the same Emotions the original Players had when playing Guild Wars and see the fallen Walls of Ascalon in Guild Wars 2. But these Soundtrack give me the little Sense of I was somehow still there. ♥
In the lore of the game, Ascalon was one of the human kingdoms which was founded in the Charr territory. The Charr were predatory creatures (resembling tigers with horns) with rather primitive clan societies. To defend against fierce attacks and occasional raids by the Charr, the Ascalonian people built a Great Northern Wall to shield their southern cities. However, after the Charr brought about the Searing which rained destructive crystals down from the sky, the wall was badly damaged and the human kingdom in danger of being overrun. Eventually the wall fell and the Charr started reconquering their old territory, destroying Ascalon. The king of the Ascalonians, Adelbern, refusing to face defeat in the final hours of Ascalon used a powerful magic from Ascalon City, which turned all the humans within it's reach into undying and forever returning ghosts which would attack any Charr or other intruder.
King Adelbern was such a sore loser... I say this from having seen how things went in the previous game. From "Guild Wars: Prophecies" The Charr conquered their way to the capital city of Rin, but by chance a small band guided by Prince Rurik managed to set off the massive warhorn known as "The Stormcaller" and disorient the horde of Charr enough to rout them. When presented with victory, King Adelbern was set to gloat about how Ascalon could never fall, but Prince Rurik disagreed. It was only a matter of time before the Charr could regroup and overcome Rin's defenders, so the only reasonable action was to evacuate to Kryta. King Adelbern could not conceive of this as anything other than folly. He'd been through the Guild Wars of the title, and for him Kryta was as much the enemy as the Charr. When Prince Rurik's temper flared up, his father doubled down and disowned him. And so Prince Rurik took those who would follow him over the Shiverpeaks into Kryta... where some of the refugees would have instrumental parts in a prophecy foretold by the crystal dragon Glint. I'm not going to spoil too much of the plot outside of this. It's pretty standard up to this point, actually. After Kryta is reached, everything goes a little convoluted and it takes a couple expansions ("Nightfall" and "Eye of the North") before things are untangled and motivations become laid bare. Lorehounds who discover stuff in GW2 are likely to have run across parts of it nowadays.
@@Immort4llity Wasn't going to be contrary myself either ;) Ascalon, after the Searing, was just... ASKING to get wrecked. At least they managed to move parts of the culture to Kryta and later to Ebonhawke. (If the Tamini had any idea what the ancestors of that settlement had gone through, they'd probably leave them alone...)
for example general and foundator of the Vigil - She's a Gladium but her dotter, was raised up in fahrar. and there is nedd or not - no one can just stop living in some way - not in that short time (generations will past, before some of "gladium cubs" could think, that being soldier isn't really needed. But i don't know all the charrs in LA and perhaps they are some "strangers" but still - they are in LA and foefire ghosts are in Ascalon - and on the Charr land there is still no civilians
hmm, You are talking about childrens of "Honorless gladium", that run out of their legion? from some dialogue in game I suppose, that even when gladium was so honorless to not bring children to fahrar, they still are bringing up the cub in more "Charrish" style. (some children dialogue at begining of that quest, when the divinity's reach are meeting only to argue there is also charr cub there) but, many gladium are bringing cubs to fahrar even, when they are outcaster of legion.
still post of DellionNL could be readed in strange ways. I see no connection, between broken Wall and atacks of the ghosts. But I haven't been in Askalon yet (for 256 years :P) so I cannot tell for sure what's speaken with that heartquest, but murdering of Charr civilians for sure isn't reason (tell charr in Askalon he is civilian - You're dead :D)
sorry one more point.. You were talking about Great Nothern Wall? if that so, there was no askalonian ghosts yet... but maybe charr was destoying another wall in askalon... with cooperation of flame legion (despite fact that after GW EotN no charr would talk to the flame legion) so what wall?
Well, not really. There's plenty of Charr around that aren't soldiers, in particular ones raised in more open and free areas of the world, like Lion's Arch for example. They don't always follow the typical Charr traditions because they have no real need of them anymore in their lifestyle.
The humans took the land of the charrs, so they take it back. Humans weren´t better as the charrs. Even in the real life with everything -.-* They are so aggressive, because they´re carefully now. It´s like a protect mechanism. To show other races, that they aren´t week and viable to protect everything, what they need. :3
The Great Ascalonian Walls...used to stand tall but they were destroyed during the Searing (the event where the Charr used magic from the Titan to literally burn nearly the entirety of the Kingdom of Ascalon into oblivion). And no..you won't rebuild them..as in GW2 the ruined Ascolonian City has been replaced by the Black Citadel (Charr capital City in Tyria) now.
humans - of course, invaded the charss agree... but rest is very not right. If you check ANet materials about charrs You'll see that charr are race of warriors. Something like spartans + technology and discipline of ancient rome. War is their sense of life. Agressive behavior isn't from cautious - all of charrs was grew up on this. Every one Charr is serving for the army - even if not fighting directly.
One of the best things i loved about Guild Wars 2 was the soundtrack.....running through a field and exploring and listening to Jeremy Soule's music.
When i played Guild Wars 2 the first time, I eventually dragged my tiny sylvari all the way through to Ascalon. Just to see what happened... to see how it looked now. And this song came on. And i stood in front of the shambles of the castle i knew from the GW1 base game... and that song hit hard.
This is the SOULE reason I level up all my char(r)s in Ascalon.
I tried to quit gw2 many times but somethings like this soothing track brings me back, I surrender to gw2
missing1person AION ost does the same thing to me.

Agreed!!
Aaaah, this is my favourite in the OST. Them strings. Wow.
My personal favorite song in Guild Wars 2.

@@kereminde I tend to agree, wasn't trying to argue the contrary. I just left this here as background information of this beautiful piece of music. :)

5 years since release and this song still hit me right in the heart.
this is the 2nd best song when wandering around in the charr territory
its epic :)
the best is #36 - A land Resorted
Exactly!
I love this song, maybe I should play Guild Wars 2 more.
This one's brilliant. Simply brilliant.
FINALLY i've had this track in my head since playing again, best track!!
This is hands down the best music in Guild Wars 2. I always stop whatever I'm doing and listen when that one plays.
makes you reminisce and hope at the same time. Great track
This moment when you realise that if all GW 1 players had united, the wall would never have fallen
For me this one is somehow heartbreaking. Makes me imagine the great ascalonian human versus charr war, and for me that alaways was a sentient topic.
We char reclaimed our rightful home! for the legions!
one of my favorite tracks!
Finally found it, My fav ost :')
the part at 1 min shivers my body everytime again.
defo one of my favorite tracks
2020, still listening... Even tho I quit playing after 7 years I will never forget the fond memories of the game and my guild...
my favourite !
Goodbye Warcraft.
the great WOW has fallen haha
Hello Guild Wars
RPing in Ascalon was so much more fun with this song.
Thanks so much for posting these.
Mavelous, strange, wonderful, magnificent ... name it.
I love it!
Masterpiece
Wish I was there when it did fall. I couldof stopped the flame legion...
They used magic of the gods that left much of the continent in ruin. Not even the other Charr legions could have stopped them at the time.
This song is the 2nd best track of the entire soundtrack. Nothing can beat Logan's Journey.
for example general and foundator of the Vigil - She's a Gladium but her dotter, was raised up in fahrar. and there is nedd or not - no one can just stop living in some way - not in that short time (generations will past, before some of "gladium cubs" could think, that being soldier isn't really needed. All I can see is a fluffy tail running around Ascalon while I listen to this

i always go craft to fields of ruin...for this :)
perfection!!!!
The beginning kind of reminds me of the old Daggerfall explore tunes.
Does anyone know why its not on spotify?
Ascalon will live on!
Yeah..but it lives under Charr High Legions' rule. The land used to belong to their ancestors anyway.
2020
2024 😢
Nice tune

Its in 5/8 time signature. Same thing as alternating between 3/4 and 2/4
Well, not really. There's plenty of Charr around that aren't soldiers, in particular ones raised in more open and free areas of the world, like Lion's Arch for example. They don't always follow the typical Charr traditions because they have no real need of them anymore in their lifestyle.
Sounds like 3/4 at times but you're right: it sounds like it changes every other bar 0.0
This is a pretty one.
ok which wall is that!
i have no idea
i want to gather my squad to rebuild it 😂
Charr civilian? that is oxymoron. Every charr is trained to be a soldier from very young
I've heard something similar in Schindler's List @ 2:28
i was there - it was only a cutscene though :P
Anyone know what time signature this is in? It's wracking my brain, but I'm loving it.
mine too
1:18!

I'm wondering if there's another version of this song in the game w/o the double basses.
Its in 5/8
I want to find the three thumbs-downers and break those digits.
and so the tutorial ends :'(
guys can anyone tell me which wall was that ?
The Great Ascalonian Walls...used to stand tall but they were destroyed during the Searing (the event where the Charr used magic from the Titan to literally burn nearly the entirety of the Kingdom of Ascalon into oblivion).

actually humans are American, the Europeans American, not the real aborigine.
Mexican are coming ! Run !
