  • Here is (the 3rd) Magnavox ZV427MG9-A DVD VCR (this time from Oregon) to be repaired. The customer complained about the power would not stay on, and after a few seconds it would power off again. I found a broken loading arm (plastic) and luckily for this customer I had a donor unit to obtain a replacement parts from now and it loads again. It was in need of a VCR tape path cleaning, DVD optical pickup cleaning, and a high ESR capacitor replacement, and now it is ready to go back to Oregon

I have one of these I just purchased at Goodwill. The DVD worked, but when I would put a tape in, it would power off after a few seconds. Then when restarted, it would eject the tape. After watching this video, I decided to remove the cover and check it out. After removing the belt to clean it and the pulleys, I noticed that the belt had a lot of memory in it from the small pulley, But after cleaning and reinstalling the belt, it still wouldn't play. Then I noticed the head wasn't even turning. It was stuck, but freed up when I turned it by hand. After I plugged it back in, the head turned and the taped loaded and played! I noticed that when I would unplug it, the head would spin for a long time before stopping, so it was perfectly free. I'm assuming that the head had just gotten stuck from sitting so long. There wasn't even a speck of dust in inside. The unit and remote looks brand new without a scratch! Not even a smudge or finger print. I have a feeling that somebody had it in storage for a while. It came with the remote and the manual, so I guess I did pretty good now that everything works. I have $10.69 invested in it plus about 15 minutes of time working on it. Thanks for posting this video. It encouraged me to remove the cover and check it out. and luckily was able to get it going. Otherwise, I would have sold it for spare parts!

Thanks for your tutorial. I noticed the head was not spinning when it was loading the tape even after cleaning the belt. I helped it get started by hand and now the head spins and the deck is functioning well.

I got two of those i didn't want to throw away, and my Polaroid combo has a 160 gig hard drive-- its power board filed due to a capacitor.. had fixed once... and am sure it can be fixed. Thanks for the video, checking capacitors. perhaps i can fix it when I have time or money to have it repaired -- its on my things to do list of priorities.. a bit long ... lol . Good repair when you have a spare. When you don't there are ways I have made white plastic parts either reattach or make them new entirely. Granted time is of the essence when being paid to repair something, but also irreplaceable items sometimes are worth the extra time and expense. I have used UV curable epoxy (Bondic) to reattach posts, latch tangs, hinge pieces etc. I have also had great success with either reinforcing or even rebuilding a part using CA (super glue) and baking soda along with an accelerant like Zip Kicker for helping cure time. I have reinforced the base of a reattachment of a broken piece as seen here with CA & backing soda with sprays of accelerant. I have built and entire new piece onto the base material by building baking soda up in an over-sized manner and then quickly cutting the excess and shaping the final with the cutting disc on a dremel. Very easy process. Just finished a repair on a broken lid hinge for a MFC printer that someone jacked at an angle and broke at the pivot pin. Looks like the piece was never repaired. Even fairly matches the beige color AND is really quite strong using CA and backing soda with Zip Kicker accelerant. The bracket I repaired holds a heavy spring captive which acts as a lid assist to keep open or lower slowly and the side I repaired where the pivot pin passes through is strong as the original molded half on the other side. If the part is a different color then plastic model paint helps. Also the capacitor find is SO familiar. I too have replaced 1000's of those over the years on so many modern day pieces of the last 20+ years. We know it's not because they are dry from age as with the 60's-80's era stuff we work on it's the crappy knock-offs and poor electrolytic formula's they use to keep $ low. Oh not to forget the undervalued caps that should have been a bit higher value for the circuit they are in. Good work and really enjoy the channel.

Maybe I don't know what I'm doing, but when I stick a tape in, it looks, internally, like what it's supposed to do, but then the tape guides retract, leaving the tape out, and it shuts off. On the monitor, it says, "EJECT C," which I assume means a capstan problem? If so, how do I examine the drive belt, without having to remove/dismantle the entire unit, because, after I unscrew the mounting screws for the VCR side, instead of lifting out, like other VCR's, there's an inverted screw, holding on to it, which appears to be that I'd have to take out the whole motherboard, just to look at the belt! Then, there's the problem of not being able to find replacement belts. If I rig rubberbands in there, which won't last long, requiring me to have to disassemble every time...
Seems best to just hook up another VCR to it and deal with it, huh? Why do these machines only play so many tapes then go caput?

Hello I have searched your videos in hope you might have had one regarding my dilemma. I have a Magnavox DVD VCR combo model ZV420MW8 with a VCR load problem. When I put in a tape, it only loads part way then stops. The right side of the tape wants to drop down for threading the tape, but the left side will not go down. It will then eject the tape as normal a few seconds later. When I try it (I have the unit apart) and "trigger" the works to load without a tape, the loading will complete normally as if there was a tape in it...then it will "eject" as normal without the tape being in the carriage. Any chance you can produce a video that might address this? I would hate to toss this out as I need it and cannot afford another one. Thank you !!!

@@norcal715 I have tried other tapes and it does the same thing. The tape goes into the carriage, starts to drop down to load but is held up on the left side, right at the point the "door" on the tape will start to open then jams on a angle. Not sure what I am looking for with all the levers, gears, etc., that could be the problem. On another note, good news. I picked up a Sylvania DVD-VCR recorder that the VHS side would not work. Carefully took it apart, labeling the screws and locations, cleaned the positioning sensor as you described and put dielectric silicone grease on it, miraculously got this unit back together...with NO leftover parts (first time in my life I have ever accomplished this) and the unit worked like a charm!!! @@LaLunaKnight after cleaning the optical sensors everything worked fine! This same channel has a video that walks through cleaning the tape sensors. That fixed it for me! Good luck!

The one I have had been working just fine since I brought it way back in 2011. However for some reason the time on the unit begins to get really out sync with normal time. After you correct the time over the next several days the time will get ready fast. Like if the time is actually 7:55pm Eastern the unit will actually say that it's 8:00pm. Over time it gets even more out of sync with the real time. Recently I bought a new replacement remote from Amazon because one of the buttons on the original one stop working. Ever since then the times doesn't get way out wack now and it stays normal. Was the original remote control causing that to happen?

@@norcal715 Thanks for answering me and it looks like that the remote control was the reason because as of this message the clock on the device still has not gone crazy. Usually it would had been 8 minutes faster than the actual time by now.

More than likely dirty emitter and optical sensors. Watch some of NorCals videos on VCR's and you see what to clean. Pretty quick and easy to do. The 'processor' HAS to see that the tape is rotating, or it'll eject the tape and shut itself down after around 10 seconds or less of play.

What causes these players to often need a vhs tape inserted into the vcr for the machine to stay on? If i dont have a vhs tape loaded then power will shut down after several seconds. Also the door doesnt open up to let the tape eject. I have to use a small flathead and help the door open at the exact time it needs to open up otherwise it gets stuck trying to go back in the player and i have to then manually assist the tape to go all the way down and seat itself in position so unit stays on and dvd player recorder can be used. Its been working like this for years but the last few weeks its just been shutting down after a few seconds so then i have to open it up and help the tape go back in correctly. All the mechanisms seem in place and belts are tight. But something is jamming up the process . Any suggestions? Some grease on the mechanisms maybe so everything glides better?
