Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

I think Brando's first instinct and the most enjoyable tactic is to make the people around him uncomfortable, confused, and hopefully speechless.

I think Brando was special because he raised these American social topics. He used the talk show that was using him to sell soap as an opportunity to talk about issues that were important to him. Brando was a great actor, and an eccentric. But in this interview his main ideas come across and he makes an impression as a thoughtful man.

When Brando says "I dont think it's worth going into" he is with zero doubt being totally honest. He didnt care what anyone thought about him, particularly if it was gossip.

Way head of his time. He definitely had that look that makes you feel like "is he mad at me?" and your also aware of the fact that at any moment he will calmly get up and walk out.
This guy was intimidating but very interesting and thoughtful.
He’s so real and authentic. He says what he really thinks and doesn’t care that he’s on the show. He’s behaving like he’s with a buddy in a coffee shop and having a chat.
Brando is a legend. There’s truly no one in Hollywood that comes close to him in terms of his interesting personality and

I love both of these men! Only Cavett has the patience and kindness to pull off the brave questioning he does. It’s obvious to me that Cavett respects Brando, but I do love the way he uses his humor to catch Brando off guard. That “They still haven’t cleaned it up yet” gets an amused touché smile from Brando. It’s like watching a chess match with these two!

There are many people with great levels of intellegence, that aren't famous. They are often quite withdrawn, give them space in your life and heart.
I hate the fact the audience constantly chuckle and laugh at everything he says when everything he says is the truth.

at that time those shows used to hire people to laugh during the program to make it more popular and off course if someone is not following the script like Brando did then those laughs make the situation more less impact and nervous like we all can see

I started watching Brando when I was 12. Im 59 now and he is still fascinating to listen to and quite funny in an understated way. We will never have another actor like him. Truly unique.

He refused to play the Hollywood establishment games so he would definitely despised today actors. I love to called him the Jesse Ventura or Bernie Sanders of Hollywood. Very moody and a pain towards people in power, yet kind to the underdogs. He and James Baldwin are what missing today😢😔😞💔.

Cavett is great but not ahead of his time. He is good at his craft. There were many talk show hosts before him. His mentor was Jack Paar. Check out Paar and Steve Allen and Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas

I feel like brando is a man that you could talk to do for hours just about life... not even about his movies, just about life, the world, the news anything and everything. He was such a fascinating and intellectual man and you know that he thinks about what he is saying and he speaks with purpose. The way he talks just makes you want to hold onto every word he is saying

And ultimately, I think Cavett appreciates that. He challenged his guests, and he liked it when they challenged him. I imagine hosting a talk show like this would be incredibly boring if everything went exactly as planned.

Not entirely true, he was serious about social issues no doubt but very early on in his career he was known as a prankster. He loved joking and kidding around. You should definitely watch more of Marlon's interviews particularly when he was younger. He was really warm, personable, and kept a smile on his face!! Very flirty with women interviewers, he is a very smooth talker and charismatic! I' m definitely fascinated by him and his life.
The problem with talk show hosts then (and now) are that they listen to so many people that they begin to become reactionary in conversational nature, they essentially lose the ability to critically listen while being able to master comprehensive listening. Its one thing to comprehend what someone is saying (2+2=4), its another thing entirely to critically examine what they are implying (2+x=4). This is exactly why these shows seemed slower paced back then. People in general now are losing their ability to effectively reach conclusions about what other people are saying. They base their assumptions off of more knowledge (content) when the real answer lies in the first hand delivery.

In 1973 people had so much faith in the press that his answer would have come across as disingenuous and evasive. In 2021 he makes perfect sense.
Few could outclass Dick Cavett. Brando was one of them.

They are nervous. Marlon is attractive , very articulate, calm , smart and happy in his own skin. He is in control of himself, it seems he is a good person so wants to help others explaining things - rather than abusing his powerful position by controlling others , which he could do - but he’s too calm and about a controlled stress free existence for that - and he seems to be very independent. they are nervous laughs from people who are the opposite - not confident and very co dependant in a crowd - they mag realise they have been living a lie too I believe and very scared about that nervously laughing at something they don’t underhand - trying to cope with the reality of Marlon’s intelligence in one way or another they are laughing at it to try to ridicule it because they are in denial and not being true to themselves and others. Some sheep just laugh because they think they are meant to on a show like this - they are incapable of thinking independently and people on high position tend to try to manipulate others and want cheap laughs - marlon seems he wasn’t like that he was just keeping it real I believe

This seems to be the 2nd half of the interview I just saw about him boycotting & declining his Academy Award on another channel & Sacheen Littlefeather being jeered & cheered at the same awards ceremony...the date is the same! But Dick’s suit is totally different. Man...is Brando right on! It’s called “Bread & Circus” (since the days of Rome)=“keep the people entertained & fed & they won’t know what the government is doing”...so they’d hoped! But Marlon Brando wasn’t going to let that happen...he boycotted & declined his award to make a statement that there’s too much false propaganda concerning not only the Native Americans, but all not whites on TV!-his words, from the other interview!

He was well known to refuse giving autographs, not because he thought himself too superior, but he was on record saying he thought it was ridiculous to think his signature was anything other than his name written. He placed no value on it, and didnt want anyone making money on it.
That’s true! Also noted is that when fans met Brando and just met him didn’t ask for autographs or hound him almost all of them that I read stated how nice he was and was interested in hearing about them and their life
