This is an old Jimmy Rogers song. Most people won't even know who he is. My dad sang me his songs when I was young. I'm 77 now, so it goes way back. THANK YOU,!
The song was copyrighted in 1924 and performed by Vernon Dalhart when he and Carson Robison were the hottest team in what was then called "hillbilly" music. The writing credit was given to Guy Massey (Delhart's cousin who was trying to start a song writting career - without success). It was the first country song to sell over a million copies. Jimmy Rogers decided on a music career in 1927 and was justing coming into his own when these two were huge. I've been performing this song in South Texas as originally written for a long while, but I think I may like the variation sung here just as well. Never considered making one of the verses into the chorus! There is a video of Dalhart singing the original version of this song to be found elsewhere on youtube.
Many artists , some renowned , have had a crack at this classic , but this particular version by a relatively undistinguished one is , I reckon , just about the best I've ever heard . Excellent !
I am 64 years old and I remember my mother singing the line "if I had the wings of an angel, over these prison walls I would fly'. I can see myself in my high chair and see my mom and hear her voice....are my tears flowing
We used to sing this song iwhen were in college in the 60s and at home.thank you John you sing very beautifully. Iam your fan .Thank you very much.God bless you.
I just recently heard this song. I have listened to Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and others singing it. Excellent renderings by Imelda May and Barney McKenna, but I think this is the best version I have heard. Also most faithful to the original lyrics.
I don't know who you are John but all I can say is Wow! I worked one the air for over 45 years and I would have played this recording until the groves caved in... You have a fan in Virginia......
This is the very first time I heard about you.I listen to a lot of music.BUT TY to you and me 😂 for finding you for a he very time.PLEASE don’t take this an insult because it’s 💯not.God but that’s your business honestly.
I just received Johns Ultimate Collection 25 anniversary 3cd set. I am so upset this song is not included. His voice is so beautiful. Now I have to figure out how to reorder it.
