There is a BBC Live Unedited version of this from 1967 with the original frontman Syd Barrett. His voice is beautifully suited to this song. RIP Syd.

I was a kid back in the early seventies when I heard this for the first time. Twelve years old I was. Amazed at the sounds that came from my nine years older friend's cassette recorder. Fell in love with the music right there and then. Saw a butterfly floating about, mid-through the song. Probably your unborn spirit. It sat on my shoulder and stayed there til the song ended and then flew off. And now you're here. My buttefly come to life. Hugs and warm greetings from Belgium, butterfly.

No problem Rebeka, your face lit up and your eyes were full of expression at the end of the track, that told its own story, Pink Floyd and masterpiece are often in the same sentence, great choice, I haven't seen that performance in years... 😊

Rebeka, I bought The first 3 albums Pink Floyd made. This song wore my record player out I loved it so much. It was mind bending either stoned or not. This was why I loved PF back then and to this day. This song also reminded of Jimi Hendrix's song 1983 (A merman I should Turn To Be) on the Electric Ladyland Album. Man I miss those days. I'm Actually surprised you played, reacted, and also love this song . We are on the same plane in many ways I believe. Beautiful reaction, thank you very much Rebeka !!!! P.S. Always love your son choices too. Peace !!

I was always a bit on the fence re the Pink Floyd Id been hearing (The Wall) in college. One day I ran across the Relics cassette at the campus store, bought it and put it in my Walkman. ZOMG!! What extraordinary sounds! Upon hearing the opening of Interstellar Overdrive, I instantly became a Pink Floyd fan. Same goes for when I discovered the original Fleetwood Mac … never was a big FM fan til I heard English Rose.
So glad you did this, Rebeka, and glad you enjoyed it so! Pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd was def a different animal, to be sure!
I def recommend Interstellar Overdrive … its an instrumental, but a real trip! Also the Live At Pompeii versions of Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, and Saucerful Of Secrets, and Nile Song, Lucifer Sam, The Gold Its In The…, Wot’s…Uh The Deal, Careful With That Axe Eugene

Very similar to the version on the live portion of UmmaGumma, recorded in the summer- i believe june- 1969. The last vestiges of this Floyd was the Pompeii sessions in October '71. After that, things were never quite the same...

My first Pink Floyd album in 1969 was Ummagumma and the version of this on it made me an instant fan. The footage of Floyd will never bore you no matter when made, they are endlessly fascinating. Any tune that was recorded at this session at KQED is gold, as is anything from the live at Pompeii. You will never run out of Pink Floyd to listen and watch, enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Hi Rebeka, great to see and hear you on Pink Floyd, one of my all time favourites since I was 12/13,am now 66,when I was about this age a few mates and I went to the colston hall in Bristol,we didn't have any money so we stood outside and could hear everything, about half way through some bloke showed us a way to sneak in through the stage door, this was about the time of this show,so fond memories, now the main reason I'm writing, please even pretty please do me the honour and check out in a lot of people's opinions one of the very very best female singers if not the best of all time, the Gorgeous talent that is Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac,the one I thourghaly recommend is Edge Of Seventeen live from the White Wing Dove show back in the 80's I think,I'm a fan of yours now,but if you do this for me I'll be a fan for ever and a day,I can pretty much guarantee you will get to love this show given the chance, hope I haven't bored you and followers to much, take care, keep up the good work, and always remember, "Stick to the roads, stay off the moors, beware of the moon

As neat as it is to see this video, with David and Richard singing lead, I really wish you had reacted to Syd's original version from the first album. Still love the reaction. Try this one out, everything about this from the TV host with the stick up his butt to Syd's presence and charisma, really tells you all you need to know about why the other guys basically built their future songs around his memory. Syd was so eloquent, a beautiful and peaceful soul. David was not yet a member of the band, but he was childhood friends with Syd, taught him to play the guitar even. And has always honored Syd's legacy. One final note... Syd and Roger really sum up what Pink Floyd was and has always been about in their interview. Just perfect how well they sum it up. ua-cam.com/video/8suJXPXXo7M/v-deo.html

Well, when you name a song "Astronomy Domine"--- it "rhymes"--- maybe you're not the most 'serious' person.
:D Just playin'. I still got mad love for early Floyd, when they weren't trying to be George Orwell, or trying to save the world, but just focused on making the best mind-f**k music available.

Thank you very much for reaction to this particular PF song written by Syd Barret. You said that they leave so much room for just playing the instruments on this one. You can also try another gem from Barret-era Floyd - "Interstellar Overdrive". They don't sing at all on it. They just playing their instruments on a highest level of schizophrenic insanity possible. And it is even more hypnotizing then Astronomy Domine.

This song was written by Syd Barrett by the way, all credit to him. I feel like Floyd should have stopped playing Syd’s songs after they left him, or at least say before the performance that this song was written by Syd, because I’ve seen reactions and people think how amazing Waters and Gilmour are for creating such a masterpiece when in reality this was all Syd Barrett’s song.

Well I did not know there was a video of this song performed in 1970. I would say that the quality of sound on this video recording is better than the live recording of the same song on the Umma Gumma live album. I actually saw them perform this song at the Liverpool Empire theatre in the UK in 1970. The set was basically as per the Umma Gumma live album with some other songs thrown in. I do remember clearly the encore. Some of the audience were shouting for Saucerfull and some for Set the Controls. I think they had already decided it was going to be Set the controls, fantastic finish to a fantastic concert.

I believe it's pronounced DOE-ME-NAY, not DOE-MINE. And I think it's a form of the Latin word Dominus, meaning Lord. I always thought that in the context of this song it was referring to God or something divine, not something negative and domineering. Just my interpretation. By the way, if memory serves (and it doesn't always), this song is best listened to on acid. Cheers.
