Korean Numbers Challenge! Including Native and Sino Korean Numbers

  • Test your mastery of Korean numbers with this memory challenge. People often practice saying numbers in order, which is a great way to learn. But when you mix up the order, it can be a little more challenging! Try this challenge and see if you can name the number before the answer comes on the screen. Some appear faster than others, so be quick! (But you can slow down the video speed if you need more time, or you can pause after I say each number to give yourself more time as well if needed). Good luck! Let me know in the comments how you do!

I felt like the English-to-Korean native numbers part was a bit too fast, but other than that, this was perfect! I’d love a more challenging video with numbers going up to 100 or even 1000.

I have always found Sino-Korean numbers a bit easier to remember but have learned both. Agree that there needed to be a little more of a pause between saying a number and revealing the answer. I had to pause and go back a few times.

I agree with Mianne, I'm currently studying sino-korean numbers because it's important when learning time. This was a fun video and more helpful then just countlessly counting numbers in order. 한국어 언니, 다 고마워요 I've been self studying korean for a little over a year now with lots of help from your videos as well. I finally booked my trip to Korea and thanks to you it won't be as hard to introduce myself, order, ask for directions and even count Korean won money etc. sending love from san diego 💕 안전하고 건강하제 지내요

Wow, this is a great way to learn numbers! I just finished your playlist on Hangeul consonants and vowels, and learning about Korean numbers sounds like a great next step for me (along with learning simple words and phrases). I had no idea that there were two different ways to refer to numbers (Native Korean and Sino-Korean). Can you please explain how & when each of these are used, or do you cover that in another video?

Number 1 is the easiest to name in both number systems. Number one is Korean Unnie‼ That's a given.
Yeah, a video on big numbers would be a nice addition to the series. But prior to that, mastering the ones from this video is a must. ^^

Personally, Native Korean numbers are way harder to remember for me. However, yes we must learn them. Sino are easier, I think because each number have less consonant so less to remember. But hey, that is my experience as for now. Thank you for the video Unnie!!!

I'm new to learning Korean (I know a small number of basic phrases and key words, and I can read hangul, but that's about it). I didn't even know there were native-Korean numbers (though I suppose that makes sense). I was only familiar with the Sino-Korean ones... or so I thought until I saw "2" and "3" and realized I've heard people counting in native-Korean numbers before! 😂
I think the Sino-Korean numbers are much easier for me to memorize, because I learned a little bit of Chinese as a kid (I am a Chinese adoptee who grew up in the US but my adoptive parents took me to Chinese language school for a little while so I learned the numbers). I am also conversationally competent in Japanese which also has numbers' root words from Chinese. So the similarities between the three make Sino-Korean numbers much easier. At least, when you get past the confusion of "i" sound being 1 for Chinese/Japanese and actually 2 for Korean lol. But overall the shared roots make it much easier for someone with knowledge/background on other languages that pull from the same root words.

That was actually fun. Not so much like a chore.
Where is the most appropriate place to send or post a lesson suggestion now?
I suppose a learner could use a couple empty boxes or like coffee cans. One for pure and one for sino. Then make a hole in the top and write numbers on little post-it note size pieces of paper and put them in the box. On one side of the papers write the number in Korean and on the other side write it in English. Use dark or thick paper so it isn't see through. They can pull the numbers out at random and read what they are and flip it over to see if they got it right.
This way they could both see the Korean first then say the English or see the English first then say the Korean as well as do it by matching the digit to the word and vice versa.
It would probably be extra helpful to draw dots under each number so a mental image of the amount the number is representing is shown to associate.
That would help me with my goal of wanting to not think in English then translate in my head, but actually think in Korean in the first place.
Then other than use it to study they also could every time they enter the room pick a paper out and try to guess what is on the opposite side of the paper.
Anyway thank you so much again for more learning! 👍🏻

This is a great video idea, and I found this video really helpful. I would definitely be all for a more challenging video like this. I don't know why, but the Korean numbers really seem to confuse my brain when said at random and I try to translate them quickly. I can say both the Korean Native and Sino-Korean numbers fine in order, but get a real brain freeze when a random number is thrown out. Perhaps it's just because of the two number systems muddling my brain. I was thinking of maybe writing a load of numbers on paper, cutting them up and then just turning them over so I can practice the numbers at random, so this video is a great help.
