  • An underestimated aspect of offshore fishing is scaling your drag. Captain Jeff Warford & First Mate Riley Crowley demonstrate a perfect process to scale and set your drags properly.
It's simple. On 50 Wides and other offshore trolling reels, there are drag-setting dials. If you scale your drag every handful of trips, you'll have more confidence fighting a fish with drag levels.
In the wintertime, attend one of the various seminars Jeff speaks at. Among many other topics, scaling your drag is a common seminar topic as it is very important to offshore success.

Great video on an important subject often overlooked. Same here, for a lot of us, in Southern California. Have done over a hundred trips from overnight to over 10 trips of 10 days. They said 130# spectra with 100# mono line as the topshot. The answer to your question is yes, it's based on the lightest line, the 100# mono. Most common is 25-33 % of that 100# line. He is at 27% which is right where I like it as well. After 25+ years of fishing I'm amazed how few people come with a scale on fishing trips. I always have somebody ask about the scale and to show them how to set it properly and to borrow it, of course.
