And a general audience wouldn't get the references. I've recommended this movie to several people over the years, and they've all liked it. But I've also made sure they know that this movie is its own thing. You've got to have a certain oddball perspective to really get into it. And a lot of people just can't get themselves into the right frame of mind for it.
@@flatebo1 Hmm....on one hand, I love the thing, it tickles me, every viewing. But on another, I feel like a film that requires outside instructions or defending, is not an ideal work. Lea Thompson had her own sitcom "Caroline in the City" from 1995 to 1999, she played a cartoonist who lives in Manhattan. If you haven't seen the Coen brothers film "The Hudsucker Proxy" starring Tim Robbins I recommend it. Wonderfully shot and it has Jennifer Jason Leigh, one of my favorite actresses.
For bad movies, my personal favorite is the original 1967 Casino Royale with Peter Sellers and David Niven (not the 2006 Bond film). It had several different directors, including notable ones like Val Guest and John Huston, and it is an incoherent mess. It's actually hard to figure out which actor is playing James Bond.
Still amazes me how Tim Robbins managed to recover from this starring in masterpieces like Robert Altman's The Player, The Shawshank Redemption and Jacob's Ladder afterwards 🤣
@@ReelReviewsWithJen I've asked myself that question frequently. lol 😆 The following year, Lucas promised that there would be seven more Howard The Duck films, then admitted that was a joke. 😂
@@ReelReviewsWithJen I think Lucas was pretty much embarrassed by the film, so he distanced himself from it pretty quickly. Unfortunately, he then moved on to Willow. 😆
Yup. Some movies have a bad rating for a reason 😂 But, hey: Having seen this movie when I was a kid, I still have fond memories of it (Not that it was good or that I liked it but more like it’s one of those hundreds of weird movies from the 80s where the special effects/costuming could not match the producer’s imaginations yet they would not let that stand in their way). In the same vein of rather bad movies I’d recommend for a reaction, I would list: - Weekend at Bernie’s - Mannequin - Short Circuit - Tango & Cash - Hell comes to Frogtown - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 & 2 (from the 1990s) - Super Mario bros. - Mortal Kombat - Street Fighter - Dungeons and Dragons - Police Academy (Any of them; there are actually way too many of them! lol!) Do note though: I did not say they were “so bad that they are good” only that they are good to react to (Some are actually decent, some are bad and some are terrible! You’ll just have to find out which is which)
The comic was a pretty smart satire of the comic book and fantasy worlds. It was illustrated by some of the best in the industry. Sadly, they made this movie, and Howard was doomed. They really did not know the audience they were looking for, as you pointed out. I think the stigma is still there, sadly. I am told that Howard makes a few brief cameos in some modern Marvel movies, but I have not seen them. Aw well. If you are looking for real classic bad movies, anything by Ed Wood, best known for 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' should be considered.
Male ducks are very violent when it comes to mating. Several of them will chase the female and when one catches her, he holds her down by the neck until he’s done with her. Then she’s attacked by another male and she ends up with a bloody neck. Essentially female ducks are gang raped by male ducks. I witnessed this a few years ago at a park i frequently visit that has a big lake.
Hopefully, Marvel will make a new and improved Howard The Duck movie in a Few years, this time make him computer generated rather than an actor in a suit.
Sure... and while we're at it, how about a movie about Kitty Pride's hamster? Disney won't make a HtD solo movie, they know it wouldn't make back the $$$ put into making it. Be glad you're getting cameos. Marvel Comics boasts over 7,000 recurring characters (not including the 30,000 or so one off characters)... not sure why a handful of folks are so determined to add HtD to the MCU out of all the other characters. I mean, at that point you are basically asking for a Groo the Wanderer film... which will also never happen.
@@shaitanlavey Haven't you ever thought the reason why I want a Howard the Duck movie more than any other Marvel character because I'm more of a Howard the Duck fan more than any other Marvel character? Because that's exactly my case. Out of all the Marvel properties, Howard the Duck is my favorite franchise. Howard the Duck has potential to have a really great and successful film since the Howard the Duck comic books are really great. Lot of the stories of Howard the Duck can be adapted to a film, so there's lot of possibilities and ideas for a Howard the Duck movie. If characters like Rocket Raccoon and Groot can be successful characters in a successful film franchise where they have a big role, why not Howard the Duck?
@@retrofan4963 "Rocket Raccoon and Groot" 2 members of a team which has had zero single character standalone films. "so there's lot of possibilities and ideas for a Howard the Duck movie" The only "possibility" worth mentioning is that Disney isn't going to throw billions of $$$ at a film that has a high "possibility" of being a box office flop, despite the film being good or bad. You and the 1000 other HtD fans out there won't make the studio enough money to waste their time. "a Howard the Duck fan more than any other Marvel character" To each his own. Although I've never heard anyone in all of my 50 years on this planet say that. Look, you are taking this way too personal. All I'm saying is that the likelihood of Disney putting a lot of time and effort into a project that will almost certainly cost more money than it makes is pretty much zero. Sure, he will pop up here and there in other films but for now, a HtD movie isn't even on the slate until at least 2024 (after Phase 4, which hasn't even begun yet and already includes 11 films). It's a good bet that Phase 5 will be where they finally start crossing the X-Men over into the MCU since Disney bought Fox... which means HtD, if ever made, is at the very least about 8-10 years down the road.
Suggestion for a bad movie: There's a film from 1980 called 'The Apple', it's a rock musical sci-fi movie and it's set in the year 1994 (So 14 years later) and it's so so bad to the point it's kind of good 😂
When I was 11 (in 1986), a neighbor friend (also 11) and I went to the local movie theater. He wasn't allowed to watch R-rated films, and a terrible fibber, so he watched Howard The Duck while I enjoyed a much anticipated viewing of Aliens lol I exited the theater with adrenaline still rushing through my veins, visions of the spectacle I'd just witnessed making me feel like The Nature Boy, Ric Flair (WOOOOO!!! 😄). My pal tried convincing me that HtD was the better of the 2 films and that I should have watched it instead of the asskickery that is Aliens 🤣
Lucas has people banned from the movie biz if they so much as even mention HTD in his presence. 😂 Might be nostalgia but I like it. But I also like bad movies too.
There's nothing wrong with howard the duck apart from back to the future it was the best film of the 80s I don't understand why people slag it probably comparing it to the comic book lol
The Howard the Duck comic books are actually really great. The 1986 Howard the Duck movie is not a faithful adaptation of the comics, but I honestly really love and enjoy it for what it is. But yeah, the Howard the Duck comics are much superior. I'd say there should be a Howard the Duck reboot in MCU that captures the spirit of what made the Howard the Duck Marvel comics so great to begin with.

This is kind of a sad story. Howard the Duck was created as a very minor joke character by the comic writer Steve Gerber in a horror comic; Howard died almost immediately but Gerber couldn't get the little guy out of his mind and brought him back to life, and Howard's popularity led to him getting his own series. Hard to believe but the HOWARD THE DUCK comic was one of Marvel's best-sellers of the time and also was critically acclaimed, and was a satirical exploration of the cynical, paranoid post-Watergate 1970s. But Gerber was chronically late and Marvel eventually fired him from the book. When Gerber found out Marvel was going to license the character out, he sued claiming he owned the character and not Marvel. Eventually the hugely expensive lawsuit beat him down and he settled out of court, having to concede that Marvel owned Howard. Then George Lucas decided to produce a movie for some old film school friends to write and produce and they settled on a Howard movie. Gerber had to watch them completely revise and misunderstand the character - who had become a sort of alter ego - and then smile and promote the movie as if he loved it. Gerber later managed to "liberate" Howard from Marvel, replacing him with an exact duplicate, but that's a story for another time.
In 1976 the character was popular enough that Marvel ran a Howard the Duck for President campaign. But Howard's popularity was pretty much just a short-lived fad. And the character has never really done well since his 1970's heyday.
What do you mean hard to believe? There's a reason why the Howard the Duck comic books are critically acclaimed, they're really great and timeless comic books that still highly hold up even to this very day. There's a lot of greatly written and clever satire and the characters are also great with a lot of depth to to them like Howard, Beverly, Paul Same, Winda Wester, and of the course the villains that Howard deals with. The stories are also really great and memorable that knows when to be serious and fun. And the Howard the Duck comics nailed all that brilliantly.
@@flatebo1 The 1970's Howard the Duck comic books are really great. And there's still new Howard the Duck comics that are produced throughout 2010's and they're still really enjoyable. Howard always has hits in the comic book run. The reason why Howard the Duck is un-fairly hated is because of the 1986 Howard the Duck movie, which obviously should not be a primary judgement on the character. Saying the Howard the Duck franchise suck because of the movie is like saying Batman franchise suck because of the infamous film Batman and Robin.
@@retrofan4963 I know. I've read most of them. Steve Gerber, the creator of Howard, wrote most of them (although maybe not the more recent outings). One of the complaints about the movie is that it didn't stay true to the kind of social/political commentary of the comics. But much of that commentary was based on Gerber's personal gripes about those issues, as well as his personal beef with comics industry insiders. Howard was just his mouthpiece for those complaints. (Some people have a talent for griping in an entertaining fashion, others don't. Gerber seems to be talented at it.) But that was never going to happen in a licensed Howard adaptation. Lucasfilm took the basic idea of Howard and went a completely different direction with it. Those critics dumping on the movie because it wasn't like the comics were criticizing the movie for what it wasn't, not for what it is.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉 Tonight I'm watching the Oscar Nominated Action thriller Runaway Train and the dark comedy film Promising Young Woman.

Sort of the same as how I view a book with an appendix or story-based authors note: If it requires preparation or explaining, then it wasn't done properly. But maybe that's just my own jaundiced outlook.
Apparently today is just a good day for bad movies. I got the notification that this had been posted right after I bought a copy of Superman 4.
Haha it was meant to be! Thanks for watching!
10:02 He was in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and a lot of other 80s movies.
Ah yes! That’s it!
Movie was very popular,, I still love it.... It's also one of the first marvel movies... I knew I liked girls once I saw this movie ,,,one scene in particular,, I was 12 when I saw this in theaters.. Howard the Duck in comics is a foul-mouthed, rude, ill-tempered duck in a satirical film-noir setting, but he is still a duck .. Obviously they couldn't go there... In today's world maybe
You can only thumb your nose at internal story logic for just so long. Best. Leo.
Just came across this video now. If you're curious of whose in the suit, its the same guy that played chucky in the original childs play.(not the voice actor but actor in the chucky suit)
"Fireball! Fireball! Fireball!" I'm excited to think that may be a "Crap Guide To D&D" reference. Even if not, at least it happily reminded me of "Revenge Of The Nerds."
I've never played D&D or seen Revenge Of The Nerds 😬
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Ah, well! It's never too late!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen LOL also, to lend a giggle, here's the three-and-a-half minute vid I mentioned, courtesy of JoCat. ua-cam.com/video/U1Gs8WTddI4/v-deo.html
This actually was rated PG. The 80s were a different time.
Jen, you didn't show the title screen , i think it was Eternity speaking, and he said, in the beginning , it was ... HOWARD THE DUCK
Jen besides Spiderman 1980 and Dr Strange 1978 this is the first marvel movie, by George Lucas from Star Wars
Still amazes me how Tim Robbins managed to recover from this starring in masterpieces like Robert Altman's The Player, The Shawshank Redemption and Jacob's Ladder afterwards 🤣
I know it’s crazy! Such a talented actor, thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Then again George Clooney was in the epic Return of the Killer Tomatoes 🤣
Jen, i like this movie, i think it's romantic, the Guardians of the Galaxy fight a Dark Lord of the Universe in the beginning of their second movie.
Howard The Duck was produced by Lucasfilm, George Lucas' production company that he started in the 1970s when he made Star Wars.
Why?! Why George why!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen I've asked myself that question frequently. lol 😆 The following year, Lucas promised that there would be seven more Howard The Duck films, then admitted that was a joke. 😂
I wonder if it was only a joke after he saw the box office numbers 😬 lol
@@ReelReviewsWithJen I think Lucas was pretty much embarrassed by the film, so he distanced himself from it pretty quickly. Unfortunately, he then moved on to Willow. 😆
There is always Attack Of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) they even made a sequel that was as bad......but these are Bad in a good. Cheesy kind of way :)
I love cheesy movies! I’ll add it to the list, thanks for the suggestion!
Howard appears in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2 and in Avengers: Endgame. He was voiced by Seth Green.
Ah yes I remember now! Thanks for watching!
he's in guardians of the galaxy 1, avengers end game, and probably more.
Jen, on the soundtrack , Beverly's band, Cherry Bomb has some good songs
Jason Alexander was Duckman, a fowl private eye! 🦆
I watched Howard the Duck and lived. I was clinically depressed, but technically alive. Best. Leo.
In the same vein of rather bad movies I’d recommend for a reaction, I would list:
- Weekend at Bernie’s
- Mannequin
- Short Circuit
- Tango & Cash
- Hell comes to Frogtown
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 & 2 (from the 1990s)
- Super Mario bros.
- Mortal Kombat
- Street Fighter
- Dungeons and Dragons
- Police Academy (Any of them; there are actually way too many of them! lol!)
Do note though: I did not say they were “so bad that they are good” only that they are good to react to (Some are actually decent, some are bad and some are terrible! You’ll just have to find out which is which)
No Reboot but he appears in the Collector's Place in the Guardians Movies and at a club in Guardians 2
Believe it out not, Howard the Duck is one of the first Marvel movies.
The redhead guy with the moustash. Ed Rooney. Ferris Beulers day off.
Fun fact. Jenning invented the car charger
He was in The guardians of the galaxy end credit scene he exists in the marvel cinematic universe.
@@spikejr3113jr Exactly, MCU should make a solo Howard the Duck film, not just resorting to small scenes cameos.
Sure... and while we're at it, how about a movie about Kitty Pride's hamster?
@@retrofan4963 "Rocket Raccoon and Groot"
2 members of a team which has had zero single character standalone films.
"so there's lot of possibilities and ideas for a Howard the Duck movie"
The only "possibility" worth mentioning is that Disney isn't going to throw billions of $$$ at a film that has a high "possibility" of being a box office flop, despite the film being good or bad. You and the 1000 other HtD fans out there won't make the studio enough money to waste their time.
"a Howard the Duck fan more than any other Marvel character"
To each his own.
A funny movie I love this movie
Technically, as long as no other movie mentions it, this is the very first MCU movie.
Target audience? We never found out.
Haha yeah I feel like this was all over the place, thanks for watching!
I always saw it as a soft-core adult spoof of the Ninja Turtle flicks.
Haha yep that’s one way to put it, thanks for watching!
About 4 years before the first Ninja Turtles movie.

Hot Shots.
Funny movie.
Suggestion for a bad movie: There's a film from 1980 called 'The Apple', it's a rock musical sci-fi movie and it's set in the year 1994 (So 14 years later) and it's so so bad to the point it's kind of good 😂
5:17, lol!( Wow!!
The principle from Farris Buller's day off.
Yes! That’s him!
So many bad 80s movies. .. They really are the best. Imo
Jen, i don't consider them bad, but i like Masters of the Universe (1987) and the Garbage Pail Kids Movie, and Super Mario Bros. (1993)
5:15 Fun fact: A duck's er... Willy... Is shaped like a corkscrew.
Oh my...well learn something new everyday 😬

Interesting! If I'm ever in Louisiana, I'll have to try it! Thanks for watching!
Lucas has people banned from the movie biz if they so much as even mention HTD in his presence. 😂 Might be nostalgia but I like it. But I also like bad movies too.
Yes, Howard The Duck is a Marvel Comics character, but the comics are nothing like this movie. lol
😌
Ah okay good to know, thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen You're welcome. Thank you for the awesome reaction videos, as usual. 😁
Maybe I’ll have to check out the comics, thanks for watching!

Howard the Duck is okay movie
Howard in comic books looks more like Donald Duck. You watch director's cut. The added scene was the one in truck with the tongue.
Ah okay good to know! Thanks for watching!
This is why I believe rotten tomatoes ain't worth shit if they believe Howard the duck is a low score movie
Not sure if you watched the recent Marvel universe stuff but he makes a small cameo in one of the end credit scenes at some point
Ah yes I remember now! Thanks for watching!
Yes he's been
This is kind of a sad story.
Gerber seems to be talented at it.)
But that was never going to happen in a licensed Howard adaptation.
I've heard good things about Promising Young Woman, I'll have to check it out!
👽 There's another one I think you should check out as well.
It's called my stepmother is an alien.
It was an 80s kids movie....80's movies explain Gen X. Yes it was PG.
In the comics Howard is a lot raunchier than this. You should Google them and see the covers. He looks different too.
Haha I just might have to!
When I was a little boy, my mom rented this for me. I sat on my giant brown pillow with my pear slices and juice in front of the TV and got about halfway through it when my mother approached me and asked if I was enjoying it at all. I shook my head as to indicate "no". She then asked if I'd like to turn it off and go get something else. I nodded my head indicating "yes".
So we rewound the tape, popped the sumbitch out and went back to the vidstore and I picked "The Beastmaster" instead! Loved it!
This is the first film to come out of Marvel
I had no idea he was connected to Marvel, thanks for watching!
Not only that, but Howard The Duck made a cameo in Guardians Of The Galaxy
I believe this was the first theatrical movie from a Marvel Comics character, and sort of set the tone for Marvel movies over the next decade.
And yes, George Lucas... but George Lucas AFTER Star Wars had finished. The magic was over.
If you count Red Sonja, it came out a year earlier
What about Conan?
He is totally different in the comics, a master of sarcasm that rarely translate well in movies! Howard was the first Big Screen Marvel hero, and that fiasco held them back a decade! He has a new lease in life on the big screen though thanks to the Gardians of the Galaxy, he even appears in Avengers; Endgame!
